I had the privilege of working around the SR-71 in my early USAF career. I was on Okinawa where we called it the “Habu” named after the local snake. I used to park my work vehicle on the flight line just a few hundred yards away from the aircraft. The process to launch the SR is very complicated and scripted down to the minute.
When it’s ready to roll a chase car halls down the runway in advance to look for any FOD or any possible people that could be lurking to get a great picture. It stops at the end and the SR takes the active runway and lights off the afterburners which shoots a 30’ flame out the back. Everything for a mile begins to shake and rattle. It’s an awesome spectacle to behold. One of the really neat things is to follow behind it as it taxis. The heat moving off the engines literally makes the plane invisible. You can see through the waves to the other side the aircraft is seemingly gone.

I used to be a Line Service Technician and I got a little smile when I saw the acronym FOD (Foreign Object Debris) So one of the things I used to do to the new line techs was send them on an errand to get a bucket of Prop Wash and some flight line from the hangar. Most of the time they'd run off and me and the other line techs would have a giggle. It was all fun an games. Anyway, it made me think of my days as a Line Service Technician.

I worked at the Lockheed (before they bought Martin Marietta) facility at Air Force Plant 42 in Palmdale CA on the Senior Span program in the early 80s. The hanger there held our Dragon Lady and an SR-71. It was interesting to compare the differences in take off between the two aircraft. The U-2 just seemed to float up into the sky until it disappeared. The SR-71 on the other hand, was like a bullet from a gun. BANG! It was gone.

The stupid thing about thr pictures is once there was already a bunch of photos all over the place THEN why bother looking for more idiots taking pictures? The moment the cat was out of the bag that part of the secret was OVER...job security for a bunch of people I guess. Reminds me of a trip I took to India. So there is a whole group of us in a tourbus and various folks are snapping pictures of anything in everything cause I mean India is so different you want to bring photos home well apparently there was a sign probably in Hindi I never saw it that said no photos which of course no one read cause not in English. Next thing we know the Indian Military police is taking all our cameras film etc....cuase there was a military base along the highway! Dumbest damn thing I mean there are a grazillion people everywhere there is NO WAY IN HELL they could EVER guard against photos....I'm sure the Pakistanis had all the photos their little hearts could desire YEARS before we ever drove through there....which there literally was nothing to see of the airbase or whatever the highway was remotely near....but they made a huge federal case out of it and ruined our day for sure...same kinda crap everwhere Im sure. I worked for a goverment contractor and I could go on and on and on how STUPID the security rules were there! Unbelievably idiotic

      .
before you say the arrow never had a weapons system ... dont forget the arrow guys made the sparrow Missile system WORK ... and it is still in use today ... and that was after the americans couldnt get it to work and were going to scrap it ...

A very beautiful model this is!! She's got some great speed too. Now, I have to say, that's how you bring the Lockheed SR-71 "Blackbird" back to life!! With a magnificent tribute to this wonderful airplane, I have to admit, that the incredible SR-71 model, would be a true show-stopper. Great work!!!!

I wonder what the RC scale speed is relative to the real SR-71- she look really fast. Flight time is obviously short (yeah, duh), but just imagine if it could go hours?

In 1965, while TWA passengers flew leisurely to LA, the SR-71 Blackbird raced at over five times their speed, known only to Skunk Works. This supersonic marvel remained hidden from the public eye, redefining the limits of aviation with its clandestine speed.

I am totally amazed. I wasn’t aware this kind of model airplane was possible. I didn’t even know there were jet model airplanes. It would seem to make all other model airplanes in any competition in any part of the world obsolete. Is everyone else there thinking, “OK, let’s all pack up and go home?” Is there anything else worth watching?

Awesome RC scale jet. I love the Blackbird, been fascinated with it my whole life. I own a much less complicated version, but still, comes in sat over 4 ft. long. Instead is powered by turbofan bladed LiPO battery fed engines.
Great looking build, and flying in front of a crowd guys, always tough to do.

I built one too out of Dollar Tree foamboard and balsa with dual 70mm EDFs. But it only flew off grass twice. It was underpowered for grass runways and wouldn't get airborne without max runway and dry ground, dead grass. I gave the airframe away after not flying it for 2 years. Great modeling here with this one.

I was lucky enough at a Mildenhall airshow back in the 1980s to go inside the open hanger with my young son. It was just sitting there with the cockpits open. Totally alone we climbed the steps up to look into the cockpit. Everything was black! all the dials etc and a it was a tiny cramped space! The fuselage paintwork looked like old dusty velvet but with a strange texture when I stroked it. We were in awe of this futuristic flying machine and it was so beautiful. Ive never forgotten it or talking to it and we were the only two people in there. No one else was around. Recently I have met this blackbird again at Duxford where he is now housed on permenant display, being the same one that was at Mildenhall. I am so thrilled to have found him again. I've loved this beauty since that day back at Mildenhall when my son and I chatted to him. ❤ Xx

These Kind Aircraft models that Are flown remotely Is Just Amazing ! Aircraft Carriers Should Carry About 25 Of These Aircraft On board to make the enemy piss away their Missiles And distract the Enemy Can You imagine 100 of these flying around during a combat mission ? I don’t think A Missile could hit one of these little Monsters ! I Truly Believe That This Kind Of Aircraft Could make the Enemies Piss Away A lot of million Dollar missiles ! And I doubt They Could Even Hit one !

Yet the SR-71 is _the most alien man-made construct_ I've ever seen, it baffles the mind how this thing was being developed in the 1940s when steam engines were still widely in use.
