Did my first oil change on a 2014 CB 1100. Actually found my drain plug to be too easy to takeoff, seem to be barely on... However, the filter was on so tight that I am sure that Honda had Godzilla put it on. With a wrench it took everything I had, multiple times, before I got it to move.
Great video - but you should include a note about using an oil filter wrench on this machine! Mine was so frigging tight, I had to order a wrench and wait for it to arrive to finish the job.
It's real easy to overfill this bike -- so don't dump all 4 quarts in at once. Do 3.5 or 3.75, let the engine run, wait a few minutes, then check the level. The level also changes after a ride. I just did mine, and with letting it drain with the plug, oil filter and fill cap off for 30 minutes, it only took about 3.8 quarts to get to the full line.
I have a 2013 and my manual states to use 10-w-30. Don't know how important that might be but let me know if the 2014 takes 10-w-40 has you have shown.
One suggestion. Add fresh oil to the new oil filter keeping in mind it will be on its side. Let it soak in then add a little more right before installing it. Means a second or two of less metal to metal. Cheers!
4 years late but don’t do this. You allow possible contamination of output side of the filter. Oil always going in the oil fill. It probably even tells you on the oil filter or in the manual to never do this.
@@moustachio334 What? This makes no sense. Contamination with what?Clean oil? I’ve been pre-filling oil filters for 40 years and have yet to experience an engine failure due to filter output side contamination.
I understand that the oil flows more freely, with more draining after the engine has been warmed up. Regardless of the oil being changed for any engine. Have you found this to be the case, or to make no difference at all?
Thomas Nessman Yes it does flow more freely. Actually forgot to mention i did let the engine warm up a bit before draining!!!! Thanks as always thomas for your supoort
Be careful not to burn your hand if you want to change hot oil. Also, I would put the drain bolt on just prior to filling the engine with fresh oil - that way, more time for whatever oil left in there to drain out more / less completely.
Actual oil capacity with oil filter change is between 3.8 and 3.9 quarts. The manual is wrong, and as you can see in this video, 4 quarts completely fills the sight-glass above the full marker. Add 3.5 quarts and then slowly add enough to get the sight-glass lined up. FWIW, I'm using Rotella T5 10w30 and it's a better oil in this bike than either the Honda GN4 10w30 or 10w40. No JASO MA2 rating, but if you look at the oil analysis of virgin T5, you'll see an excellent additive package suitable for wet clutch, no moly, and lots of zinc and calcium. My '14 Eleven loves it!
@@TBT13977 it will capture the dirt in the oil so when you drain it it will come out. If done when cold the dirt stays in the bottom of the case and doesn't come out.
I did this for a living (A tech) for over 30 years and I never understood why people tighten the hell out of the oil drain plug? It does not hold anything on so just snug it.! (I guess people are scared it's going to fall out?) I tighten the filter just a little more using the wrench, I have had a few blow the o-ring when cold and the engine was at a higher RPM, when only hand tightened. I did however work on many high performance machines that probably had higher oil pressure. I always clean the filter and plug area at the last with brake clean, if you didn't some customers would return thinking they had an oil leak. BTW: there is a oil filter wrench just for Honda filters, it has a 17mm on it also, it works on other filters of the same size too. Several people sell it; www.fz09.org/forum/attachments/11361-oil-filter-wrench-wrench.jpg Also; please don't rev the engine for the first minute or so after replacing the filter, it takes some moments to clear all the sir out of an empty filter... I like to watch these videos Mike, you never know what you will learn...
Bass Player Thanks for the tip about "revving" motor! The Oil Filter Wrench might not be a bad idea since I have 3 Hondas!!! Nice to DIY on these things and stick that Labor Charge $$$ in MY pocket!!!!
Hello Mike! I came here from the cb1100 forum, great video! As you are an experienced user of the cb1100 I'd like to ask you... How tall are you? I'm 6'3" and I'm in love with the cb1100 but I didn't have the opportunity to try it and see how this will fit for me. What do you think? Greetings from Spain ;)
Hey man, I am 6'3" tall with a 36" inseam. I weight about 215lbs. I feel great on this bike. All parts are stock on mine. I was worried at first, but it did not take long for me to get comfy. My other ride is a much larger and heavier Honda CTX1300D.
Hey Mike nothing like working on a naked bike no plastic parts to pull off so you can get to stuff I'd know you wish you could get to everything on the Goldwing as easy.
yep....you are correct. its not enough to worry about...but you know some you tubers...ya say 4 its and then I get flamed for False information by some Gear Head! LoL. This honestly was the easiest bike so far to change. You can actually easily reach everything!!!
The materials should be dropped off at various recycling collection depots throughout the state, which includes participating garages, dealerships and retailers. Not down the storm drain!
Probably one of the easier oil changes to do on a vehicle 👌
Used your video today to change the oil on my 14' CB1100...E-Z peasy, thanks!
Awwsome!
Great camera angles under the bike!
Broncster33 thank you sir!

Great video sir... love watching your vids !!👍🏻🇺🇸🙏🏻
That neighborhood looks like Longview, TX.
Good job sir. Great illustration.
Thank You wingman!
Just stay in formation and there won't be any trouble...... :)

My old Shadow was kind of like that as well
great video I wish everything was that easy to get to on my wing . Good job
You aren't kidding!!!!
Great video mike
thanks Top dog!
thank you so much for this.

Most all honda recommends 10-30.
It depends how hot it gets where you live. 40 will flow like 30 at a high enough temp.

Good to know. I have since sold my CB1100. Great machine. But I always wanted a VFR800 and I have a 2015 VFR now
Ohhh.. "change the oil!!".. this whole time I've been trying to get mine to be a bit more conservative!! 😉
LoL
Do you run your bike a bit to warm it up before you change the oil?
Yeah a min or 2
Also you should warm the bike up to operating temperature before drainig.
Good detail I left out!
Why.?

Philly .D Easiest Oil change by far in my LIFE!! Something to be said for simplicity in a motorcycle!
Sweet ... Hey come do mine next lol..
Dbest1a Vlogs MemphisMike Oil Change Service!! Be right there
does anyone know the size of the oil drain plug crush washer?
It appears to be 14mm.
In all honesty I'd just add 4 qtrs even. .1 low will be perfect. That is a lot simpler than HD for sure.

Amsoil is what I like to use in my bike.
