*UPDATE SINCE RECORDING THIS VIDEO:* The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has revealed the names of 16 artists or other musical figures who will be inducted in 2024. It’s a diverse list that stretches from R&B/rock pioneer Big Mama Thornton to pop superstars Cher and Dionne Warwick, and from ’70s-rooted rockers like Peter Frampton, Foreigner and Ozzy Osbourne to ’90s icons the Dave Matthews Band, Mary J. Blige and A Tribe Called Quest. Surprisingly, Jimmy Buffett pops up among the inductees - unexpected because not only was the late singer/songwriter not on the ballot this year, but he had never even been nominated before. But the Rock Hall’s committee was clearly in a sentimental mood after his passing seven months ago, and took the liberty of ushering Buffett in via a separate, non-voted category, for “musical excellence.”

However the biggest shocks I think are The Monkies, Iron Maiden, Jethro Tull, Supertramp, Meatloaf (the 5 biggest shocks) also Thin Lizzy, America, ELP, Foreigner, and Slade. In my opinion, Golden Earring should be the first act to be given consideration from this list! Before George Kooymans fell ill with ALS they were the oldest rock band to still have the founding members in tact. They predated the Stones by one year, having been formed in 1961. Here in the U.S. they're remembered for only two hits, but in their home country they were consistent hit makers! "Please Go," "Sound of the Screaming Day," "Daddy Buy Me a Girl," "That Day," "A Little Bit of Peace in My Heart," "Gipsy Rhapsody," "Back Home," "Holy Holy Life," "Stand By Me," and many, many others...every track is top shelf; rock solid, and that's before you even start dissecting album tracks! For my money their "Miracle Mirror" album is one of the greatest of the 1960's and should be way, way better known than it is! "Golden Earring" (a.k.a., "Wall of Dolls"), "Seven Tears," "Together," "Switch," "To the Hilt," "Contraband" (a.k.a., "Mad Love"), their live album from 1977, "No Promises -No Debts," "Prisoner of the Night" (a k a., "Long Blond Animal"), "N E.W.S.," and of course "Moontan," and "Cut" are absolute classics! I say that because if you listen to say, 1975's "Switch" album alongside other albums from that same year, it will fall within the top 10 or 15, 20 at the least, albums of that year, and that happened consistently with each of the above mentioned albums! They were a power house, and you've done yourself a huge disservice by not hearing them, these albums are essential!
Focus should be in the hall of fame solely on the strength of the "Moving Waves" album because it demonstrates the tremendous amount of talent that it's possible to contain within one unit! "Focus 3" took it even further, and is along with "Hamburger Concerto" their best work! Again, essential!
Another Dutch band that should be in the hall of fame is Cuby+Blizzards! Their early singles were extremely good - particularly 1966's "Got a Million Dollars" backed with "Your Body, Not Your Soul," awesome, awesome single! Albums such as "Appleknockers Flophouse," "Trippin' Thru' a Midnight Blues," "Simple Man," "Too Blind to See," and "Sometimes" are sooo well worth the time it takes to hear them!
Yet another Dutch band worthy of inclusion is Earth and Fire. Twin brothers Chris and Gerard Koerts started the band and had it on the ball enough to hire Jerney Kaagman to handle the vocals, and man did she ever! They started strong right out of the gate with 1969's "Seasons," written by Golden Earring's George Kooymans. Their debut album is extremely good! It has "Seasons" as well as two other singles: "Wild and Exciting," and "Ruby Is the One," which had a great B-side, "Mechanical Lover!" "21st Century Show" from this album is also extremely good! "Song of the Marching Children" was their second album... absolutely fantastic! "Storm and Thunder" was edited down a bit and used as a single, and had a non album track on the flip side: "Lost Forever." Really rocking track! The title track was also issued as a single. "Atlantis" is a great album! "Memories" is a single that everyone should hear before they die! "Maybe Tomorrow, Maybe Tonight" is a great pop record! They went disco later on which is where my interest dropped off, but those first five years were awesome!
If you're not well acquainted with any of the material mentioned here, then you've got some work to do! The ability to create classic memorable rock wasn't restricted to North America, Britain and Australia. In fact, your music exploration has a pretty good size hole in it if you haven't heard at least the music mentioned above and much more!

See this is a tough one for me. Do I think that there are some glaring omissions? Absolutely. But I don't really blame rap artists being in their over some classics. They still had an impact on music, and even tho they weren't rock and roll in genre, I still think the Hall has the belief has the idea of rock and roll as being something that goes against the grain like it did back in the 1950s, which often means going into different styles of music. Rock and roll was about having no rules in the beginning, so why are ppl suddenly inventing rules saying other artists shouldn't be in? That said, I completely agree with some of these Larry. Brian Eno should have definitely been in years ago along with Phil Collins. I tend to agree about Roger Daltrey tho haha.
Got an important question for you, tho. If The Guess Who were to be inducted, what do you think would happen if they got the "fake" Guess Who to play their induction ceremony?

Here's one of my "Dirty Dozen Snubs From The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame: 2. Esther Phillips - while with Johnny Otis, was one of the first female singers to emerge from R&B to pioneer Rock & Roll in the early 1950s. After fighting addiction, she resurfaced in the 1960s, adding her distinctive vocals to a variety of musical genres. Paul McCartney said her version of "And I Love Him," was one of his favorite Beatles covers, and the Fab Four brought her over to perform in England. Nominated twice [86-87], her name has not appeared on a ballot since.

Here's one of my "Dirty Dozen Snubs From The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame: 3. Lonnie Donegan was the leading performer of Skiffle, a British style that combined American Folk, Country, and Blues - slightly different than Rockabilly, but very influential in people wanting to be in a band. Just ask Skiffle band The Quarrymen, who became The Beatles (and many other British Invasion bands that started in Skiffle).

It's not supposed to be about sales or charted hits, but about influence. I'm digging quite a bit deeper than most commenters, going back in time for historical importance, not just because I am a fan of the artist. Here's one of my "Dirty Dozen Snubs From The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame: 1. The Rock & Roll Trio (Johnny & Dorsey Burnette, Paul Burlison) - Raw Rockabilly, three guitars and no drums, influence on Garage Rock, Punk, Psychobilly. Ask The Yardbirds and Aerosmith who both cover "Train Kept A Rollin'."

  • @anthonydaniel1727
    @anthonydaniel1727 Месяц назад +1

Here's one of my "Dirty Dozen Snubs From The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame: 4. Cliff Richard & The Shadows - largely unknown in the USA at the time, but one of the most important influences to spread Rock & Roll internationally. While a bit tamer than his American contemporaries in the 1950s, Richards & The Shadows toured Continental Europe, and the British band often recorded versions of their songs in foreign languages, making Rock more accessible. Besides being his backing band, The Shadows also recorded/performed on their own, and internationally equal The Ventures as a (largley) instrumental guitar band.

Often referred to as the French Elvis, Hallyday brought Rock & Roll to France and sang mostly in his native tongue, Over a 57-year career, with sales of over 110 million records, which makes him one of the top-selling artists in the world - but the Hall of Fame is only for English speakers.

Here's one of my "Dirty Dozen Snubs From The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame: 12. The Monkees - now that Jann Werner is no longer involved, his infamous ban on the Pre-Fab Four could be lifted. Yes, they didn't exactly form in the organic fashion of most bands, but they quickly fought against the system, and won. They sang, played instruments, wrote songs, toured, and were accepted as peers by many in the elite of 1960's Rock culture [even MCed at Monterey Pop]. Many of their recordings are timeless and range from Bubblegummy Pop to Country Rock, and the TV show laid the groundwork for some of the editing styles of MTV videos. To me, Grank Funk Railroad is the most absurd omission. I think that many younger people (I'm talking about people younger than 60, haha) only see GFR as that band that covered "Locomotion" and "Some Kinda Wonderful" and they don't realize that GFR was one of the BIGGEST concert draws and record selling bands in the world for half a decade BEFORE they ever recorded those cover songs. They recorded FIVE Platinum albums (one of which was double platinum) and FOUR gold albums between 1969-1974 - that is NINE platinum/gold albums in just 6 years! And they broke concert attendance records. And their music was about as ROCK as music can get (no questions here about proper genre identification - GFR were ROCK). But critics hated them back then, and apparently they still hate them now. You know what, Larry? I now think that being snubbed by critics and "Hall of Fame" people is a mark of Rock and Roll HONOR.

I think you should do a video using the wiki page on the complete list of inductees, and see which one’s you would throw out. Seeing how it was structured, from the start, I think it’s been pretty fair over the years and I wouldn’t throw out that many. Miles Davis, Rock & Roll? I’m surprised he accepted it and that Herbie Hancock gave it to him :). I’m glad to find out DJ Kool Herc as an award. They never should have used the term Rock & Roll for the award. Were people in uproar when it started in 1986 that Marvin Gaye, Sam Cooke, Aretha Franklin and Ricky Nelson where inducted? Do you think they should be thrown out?

    1. Iron Maiden (talent in all parts of the band: that galloping style defines the head banging experience)
    2. King Crimson (very influential and talented)
    3. ELP (best keyboardist ever and very Neil Peart'ish drumming before Neil Peart)
    4. Motley Crue (by far the best of the hair metal bands; despite their aloof appearance they are very good musicians with many many good songs. Tommy Lee is a very underrated drummer)
    5. Megadeth (consistent greatness over the decades; elite musicians with great production)
Bonus: Dream Theater (as talented as they come; they are Rush mixed in with Metallica and ELP; not sure if this band would entice voters simply because their best songs are 20 minutes. songs like Octavarium, Count of Tuscany, and Illumination Theory are masterpieces.)

Technically, rock and roll is a youth driven music movement that comes out of a generally oppressed section of society, and is in a constant state of morphing - whether it is poor white trash in the South with Rockabilly, beach bums in California with Surf, underemployed lads in Liverpool or London, social misfits at CBGB in New York, gays in dance clubs. The most important source for change has always come from the African-American experience - which has given us Jazz, Blues, Country, Swing, Rhythm & Blues, Rock & Roll, Soul, Funk, New Jack Swing, and Hip-Hop. While it has been co-opted by, and now largely consists of white people - Rock & Roll is essential Black.

It is totally bizarre how the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame works (or not), and some of the omissions are completely jaw-dropping.
But what do you say when your favorite artists don't even reach the 150 artists omitted from the Hall of Fame, like Sparks? OK, they are not my favorite artists but they made quite a contribution to the 70s.
I suppose, in the end, all this outrage about who is missing from the Hall of Fame (20-30 omissions that are beyond outrageous) just pumps up the Hall of Fame like some Cleveland-style withholding parent.
As for groups vs. individuals, it astonishes me how fans love a band but never follow the solo career of key members. To me, Don Henley is so much better than The Eagles. And I suppose the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame reflects our ambivalence.
Most of the bands / individuals who have missed out are pretty classy and indie, so they probably just see it as a passing stamp on their feet, but, as you say, when they look at who has been inducted ...

Bob Marley/Jimmy Cliff represent Reggae, but not counting on Toots ^ The Maytals, Steel Pulse, or Third World to follow. Prog has Yes, Rush, Genesis, Pink Floyd, and The Moody Blues. Metal has Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne, Van Halen, Metallica, Guns N Roses, Def Leppard, Judas Priest, Rage Against The Machine - plus some borderline hard rockers like Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, AC/DC, and Bon Jovi = Artists that made a paradigm shift to their respective genre.

Top of that list is Chubby Checker. One of the few surviving guys in that era still around. Ben E. King, Diana Ross not in as A Solo in a Crime. Mary Wells, practically built Motown. Jan and Dean and Dick Dale are among many surf groups that are underrepresented. How can you put Dolly Parton and and not have Patsy Cline? And way before any of these garbage bands, Gloria Estefan. The most significant Latin artist of the last 50 years and basically paved the way for everyone from Jennifer Lopez on down.
The girl groups are also sadly under-represented. They should be all in there by now.

@LarryGravesCanadianStudmuffin. You may already know this. Blue Oyster Cult - a band with some 50+ years of history (and still out there doing what they do!) have not been nominated for RRHOF ever. Apparently, the reason for this is that back in the last century the then management of BOC had a falling out with Jann Wenner - Chairman of the Board of RRHOF. The rift has never been resolved and so BOC have never been nominated. However, Mr. Wenner has been deposed as Chairman, so maybe BOC might get in before Buck, Eric and the boys retire!
Another band that have a 50+ year history is Little Feat. But they have never been nominated. Small wonder that the RRHOF is held in such poor regard amongst the real rock music fans. I once heard it called “The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fraud”. Anyway, we live in hope……… Stay safe and well.
