This is a very interesting take. I don't know if I fully buy into the idea but I am pretty convinced that the reason this episode was so close to the end is because it wanted us to reflect on the show ending. To be honest I really like the idea that Adventure Time is saying that the show is gone and while it's okay to be nostalgic, we shouldn't hold on to our nostalgia too tightly, to the point where we create a souless sequel, in a flawed attempt at recapturing the magic of the original. As you pointed out, it's probably a stretch but now that the series has been over for a fair amount of time, it's probably worth it for me to go over episodes again now that I have a different outlook on things.
I wouldn't give myself too much credit, after all I said two to three years and they did it in barely more than one (-_-;) But to be fair we don't really know whose writing it yet so it could be good...I'm not terribly optimistic though...
I totally agree with what your saying, but I also think that this was a nod to the past. Like I think the episode throws the older, more mature Finn into a semi- childish situation. It shows how much the characters have grown and changed. Like Finn and ice king were enemies in seasons 1-2, but now they are working together as friends. Plus, this episode was way more goofy and silly with its joke, like how the early seasons were. It’s like one last laugh before gumbald and glob take the spotlight
After distant lands this is so weird in retrospect

It's worth noting that this was the last episode Patrick McHale wrote for. He probably wanted to leave on a good note.
