I have been playing both electric and acoustic guitars since 2018 and learning. I've played classic rock and country with some bluegrass. I was asked to play with a praise group and not real familiar with the genre. The gentleman who asked me to play with his group is a huge help and your videos are dovetailing nicely with this opportunity. I am very new to playing contemporary Christian music and stumbled upon your videos. You are a super teacher. Thank you
Last time I played on a Sunday morning. The melody was played mostly from the piano. So on the chorus I just hung on one chord. The bass was playing the changes, the piano the melody and I just kind of cross picked one chord the whole time, It sounded amazing. The ringing notes really added to the song. Simple supports the song,
CJ, this lesson is a gem for me. I’m 71 and many of the triad lessons have music theory tied to them, and it’s very confusing to me. You make it super simple because I have learned open chord shapes by memory, so with your triad lesson, I can do the same. I memorize positions rather than notes on each string if that makes sense. I look forward to discovering the triads in each key. Thank you!
Your teaching is amazing! I wish you were around when I was learning to play the first time. You make the most complex things so much easier. God bless you and keep doing what you're doing!!!!
When I learned triads and how to use them, it changed everything for me as a guitar player. And I still like listening to new approaches on how to use them. Great video!
I played electric for the first time this past sunday morning and this is basically what I used. This is amazing. I am very new to guitar, but it was amazing.
I love triads, they took me a while to nail them down, using them, in so many ways, I had never considered just staying on the G for the Em.. Glad I watched..
This is an eye and ear opening lesson! I've been dancing around this all my life without understanding what I was doing until now! I'm excited about what you have opened up for me! Thank you so much!
Brother, It is obvious from what you say around 17:40 ff - "boring" etc that you have a pastor's heart with what you do. I haven't seen much of that in the electric guitar/lead guitar tutorials. Please be encouraged and please continue. This was a great video. God Bless. Subscribed and bell'd
This is simply brilliant. As a long-time acoustic player and a relative newbie to electric, I realise that playing fewer notes at once is where it's at. Thank you.
Man you are such a blessing! I am trying to learn electric guitar for our team! Been playing Acoustic and Bass for a long time BUT gotta confess that I find the electric guitar difficult! You have opened my eyes! THANK YOU 🙏
CJ, Ive been trying to wrap my head around triads for awhile. I even took a course with Charl on worship guitar. Your teachings are awesome and I appreciate it so much. May God bless you.
So glad it's been helpful! Charl is a fantastic teacher with a lot of great content. I'm glad we have so many different kinds of teachers. We need all of them and more!
praise God, i have an idea about major G chord but it open my eyes and first time to use triad and you made it simple, i cant wait for the remaining keys, thank you. all Glory to God
"playing those 4 note triads" lol that got me. I very much appreciate you saying we need to have the courage to be bored. Everyone on stage should have that say courage if we are truly there to serve and not be served. Great video, bro! looking forward to the position 2 vid.

Great lesson. I nesrly switched off as i figured I knew the shapes already, but i completely forgot I could use the 1 shape for the 6 chord, and I like the trick with the open G string for the 5 chord. Please hurry and release more!
Hey CJ! This was fantastic! Thank you for giving us this wonderful technique which is so easy and yet so beautiful! This is going to help so much. man I just found your channel through this video! I will watch all your next videos! you're amazing! you're funny and this video was just incredible! I had a lot of fun with you there! many thanks!! god bless you!!
This is very good video in utilizing voice leading with the I triad. I'm glad I have decent understanding of triads already though and I would recommend someone new to know how major and minor triads are built first. The actual Em is easy enough to play by just putting the pinky down on the 2nd string fifth fret when in the G triad position to create the real Em triad (E,G,B) even if just intermittently for improvisation. That 4 chord was implied with by putting the pinky on the fourth note of the G scale (3rd string/5th fret) but is actually a Csus2 triad (1,2,5/C,D,G), which some people may not realize. It actually sounds more ambient instead of playing the actual C major triad (1,3,5) but knowing how triads are built can give a better understanding of what is being played and then alterations can be made for variety. I think learning how to build maj (1,3,5) and min (1, b3, 5) triads are essential first and then it's easy to play extensions when you know the intervals of each triad. That D add 11 triad is super pretty, which is new to me but know the full chord, which is one of my favourite. Learning some practical theory the last couple years has really been eye opening and allowed me to understand what I was playing in order to improvise better. I think it has served me better to know the differences and allowed me to grow more as a guitarist.
Triads, triads, simple but beautiful, jazz and rock use them all them time, to lead into a solo off the chord and to bring back after turn around. Kinda like arpeggios but even easier to use? Thanks can't wait for prt. 2

Can you recommend some picking patterns to play with triads? I am trying to incorporate the triads into finger picking and was looking for some patterns.
For me, the picking pattern is mostly dependent on the song I'm playing. I'm considering quite a few things like rhythmic patterns, the melody, and where the song is dynamically. So, honestly I think as long as you're considering these things, you can't go wrong. Hope that helps!
I've really enjoyed your channel as a true beginner that wants to be part of the mix at church ASAP. We have a very small team and no electrics yet. I think this background style would fit me as a beginner and also would be a good starting zone for people who aren't fans of electrics. How would you approach a worship leader with the idea of purposefully playing background triad fills? Is it going to be difficult if the lead is a piano?
That's a great question. If your piano player is playing a lot of melodic lines with their right hand, I would utilize the triads to play rhythmic patterns and not necessarily melodies. If the piano player is playing simple rhythmic patterns with chords, I think you'd have more room to use the triads to create melodic lines. Hope that helps
Okay, so I'm not a highly skilled guitarist by any stretch. I love the triads. I trying to understand the "C" shape that you show. The notes in that shapes you are using are if I'm correct: Don the 4th fret B string, then C and G. I learned it with the index finger on the 3 fret for the G then the C and E on the 5th frets. How does your triad with a D become a C triad? Thank you. My apologies for a dumb question if I'm not seeing the obvious.
This is a great question! I'll address deeper in future videos. But basically I'm adding some flavor to the IV chord, which in this case is the 9. That D note added to a C Major gives the IV chord more of a modern sound and helps connect the chord to the key for some tonal consistency. And I just like the sound.
It could be called a few different things in a chart. The Csus2 is one way of involving the 2 or 9. The main point isn't that the sus2 is the best option, but that the IV position often uses the 2 or 9 and this is one simple way to incorporate that.
Intersting session, thank you! The EM could also be played B-5, G-4, D-5 ? Basically using the pinkie on B-5 from the G triad B-3, G-4 D-5. Keeps the same basic position on the neck.
I've gotta ask, where are you from? The way you pronounce "root" had me chuckle every time. I'm sure you'd also laugh at how I as a southerner pronounce it!
