I became obsessed with this marvellous book after it featured as BBC Radio 4's Book of the Week. It was also superbly read and I now wish that I downloaded it.Robin Witting
Read this in my own 20's - quite a while back, it struck me as a perfect novel. lyrical, full of the mysteries of life and youth, a precious chapter distilled for us to drink and enter that magical world now long gone.
This is great - please download more of it - after listening to this more than 20 years ago I had almost given up hope of ever again listening to that voice narrating this!
Yes,such a unique, expressive voice, I had the privilege of hearing him in real life, he was such a humble, gentle person, who gave me a signed copy of his latest book, lovely memory. 😊
I first read this book, before discovering Madrid and the rest of Spain. It remains one of my favorites and one I could read again and again. Laurie Lee describes so well the different types of food which you will find today in the bars in Madrid. Thank you for sharing this most beautiful of recordings.
One of my most loved books, often seen as a dubious second memoir but this is the 'nightingale' inside Lee at its best. I almost bought his home in Cider With Rosie, Rose Cottage in 2005 but although Slad is a welcoming village the dip of the valley, one of the five fingers of the Cotswolds, was oppressive to me. I did get to see inside the cottage which in many ways was unchanged from Lee's data when he returned to it in old age in the '70s. Eventually, his French wife saw he was struggling to get up the hill to his beloved Woolpack pub so they moved into the centre of the village. Anyway, this passage is, in my humble opinion, one of the best pieces of food writing ever printed. Oh, to write like this. Finally, my former partner and the mother of two of my children records at Isis in Oxford to this day. I had no idea it had been around for so long. A beautiful recording.
Marvelous to hear Laurie Lee read this excerpt from his own book. He used to come into my paper shop in Stroud in the mid 80s and buy magazines on nuclear missiles.
Such a marvellous book - I've lost count of how many times I've read it.

His description of Southampton docks is literary genius.

Lovely to hear even a snippet of his life like that
beautiful
Wonderful - thanks for allowing embedding - we've added to volunteer run Stroud Community TV.
He reads this tale and is infused with Spain
