I worked here as a teenager in the early 1990s.
It's so weird to see how it's kept that 1980s vibe, and how well-preserved the tile work and features are. The stores have come and gone, including the Kmart where I worked, but the bones of the mall look exactly like they did back then.
    It's like a time capsule.

When my dad was on strike at the local coal mine around 1980, he and several other miners learned to lay tile so they could work on this project and keep us kids fed. He used to show me the parts he did, and I worked in the mall as a teenager in the early 1990s.

3:00 That is where the Kay Bee toys was to the right I think. The one I missed the most there. Others I miss were the Sound Shop and of course the big ones like Kmart and JcPenny. I cannot believe Fishers is still there. I have bought some nice clothes there in the past.

I don’t know why this video just came up in my recommended vids but… I live 30 minutes from here. Haven’t been to the mall in many, many years though. The place used to be extremely busy and crowded, mostly by kids when out of school. It got to where every adult there, including myself, felt like chaperones or at a daycare. Interesting to see it so… lifeless now here in this video. I didn’t know it was even still occupied and open. Very interesting content here and it was good to see. Thank you for making this video.

The camera doesn't do justice for how dark the place is, especially the eating area with most of its lights burned out.
And why no footage of the abandoned KMart exterior? That's the most prominent feature of the place from the front.

I am not sure why I keep coming back to this video, but it has to do with the sadness of a lonely mall and seeing ths people who went there and to find out about, what seemed like old friends, who had passed.. Every time I see this video, and its not like I come every day or even month, more like 6 8 10 months between visits. I get so emotional when I see it. and wish that some day I would check in and see it crowded once more. I do not live in the south and I have never been to Alabama, but I am rooting for Jasper!

I really love the old school vibe of this mall. It’s not totally redone in gray. I also like Alabama. I spent a couple of days by Birmingham in August. I’m glad to see it thriving!

I think the fact that this is a pretty tiny mall helps. It's not impossibly big to maintain or try to fill like Pittsburgh Galleria is.

Sweet home Alabama......my sister in law taught at Cordova high school in the 90s. She lived in Jasper. We frequented this mall while she lived there. The first time I visited was in the 7th grade in the early 80s while on a trip with my middle school choral group from Attalla Al.

I used to work at Jasper Mall. Penny's held on the longest there. One reason the mall is failing is the rent was way too high. The store I worked in was very busy but the rent and economy caused the store to close. There were 2 Jewelry stores in the mall for years and years. But they both closed. Many small restraunts were just inside near the center of the mall but the rent out did the income of each.

Hello, Doomie! My wife told me about this video, and I had to drop in. I'm a lifelong Jasper resident, born in the old People's Hospital that was razed and replaced by the CHS civic center in downtown Jasper. If you're ever interested, do a llittle research on the nurse there who was murdered by explosion when she cranked her vehicle in the hospital parking lot way back in 1976 or 1977, can't remember exactly. I was born in 1970, so I was a little guy then, but the urban legend among all the kids was that they found her head on the roof of the hospital! Yikes!
I was 11 when the mall opened, so it was in full force during my "cruising" days in high school. Man, all the girls with certified "mall hair" and economy bulk subscriptions to Aqua Net were all over the place, and us guys LOVED it! Every weekend and most weeknights the place crawled with teenagers, and I was just thinking today as my wife and I went to Garfield's on a date night (we had a great steak and even better conversation btw) that I really, really miss the life and excitement of those days. Of course, at about-to-be-54, there's a LOT of excitement I miss. 😁
Anyway, I just wanted to complement you on the video! Yes, I've seen the documentary, and of the three, four, five or so other videos I've watched on the mall, rest assured that I never think in terms of better or worse productions...to me they all add to the history and combine to make a more complete story. My kids never saw the Jasper Mall in its glory days, and I know my grandson will probably never experience a great mall experience at all now, but through these videos us oldsters can remember those great moments from our youth. They haven't been forgotten really, but they've just kind of been boarded up behind the walls of time. Thanks for helping pull them back into the light!
If you come back, we certainly welcome you, and we hope that you have a much less-painful experience next time. You can track me down at Manchester Auto Parts north of town where I'm more or less a permanent fixture. Take care!

I'm a college student here in Jasper and I actually did a huge research paper on that explosion you're referring too. Her name was Paula Conners and that explosion was caused by her ex-husband. I know this because I interviewed her son who is still living and he assured to me that his father told him that he had set up the explosion. It's tragic what happened to her but the father is never going to face criminal charges for what he did. He is now residing in Missouri somewhere from what the son told me and he's living out his last years.
As for the mall, yeah I love it and I'm amazed by how many people from around here that are aware of it. It's an amazing mall and I have so many memories from it growing up.
My favorite memories are going to the CD store and buying WWE Movies and going to KMART for toys. Good times..

@@Pugging very nice to sort of meet you! Once you mentioned the name I immediately remembered that it was Paula from all those years ago, but I couldn't remember "Conners". Thank you! I've also heard many times over the years that her ex was behind it, but you've told me something new that he has escaped justice and is in Missouri. How sad that is.
Next time you need to do another research paper you might look into a situation where a man was killed when he cranked his riding mower and it exploded. I'm asking for details from a buddy of mine because my memory stinks, but I think it happened back in the '90's in a sub division off Walston Bridge Road. My friend believes his name might have been Gary but the last name escapes us right now.
Of even greater interest might be the 20/20 TV show interview back in the '80's with a supposed mafia member (voice was changed electronically and he sat in the dark for the show) who said that "a little town in Alabama called Jasper" was the best place to get hit men. 😳
I wish you a great future with your degree.
