Screenshot of the settings before you generate the QR code in the Runcam app? Just an idea for saving the settings in a way that you can reference them later.
Hi Josh I saw a “not for everyone solution” to know the actual configuration of the camera, backup it and maybe tweak it from the camera memory once plugged to the computer by usb: there is a config.ini file where you can easily read its configuration. The format is easy to understand and all the possible options of each parameter are listed. Hope it would help someone.
Niek's code isn't actually a stand-alone application - it generates remapping files which are used as input to ffmpeg. It's based on some playing around I did in Python (although Niek ported it to Go and made it a much cleaner package) and it's got some serious aliasing problems since there's no interpolation on ffmpeg's remap filter. I never really got it to the point I was happy with it, and abandoned it because the Runcam 3S never had any 4:3 resolutions anyway. Now the Runcam 5 has that intriguing 1920x1440 option I'm in the process of rewriting the whole thing with interpolation as a self-contained application and hope to have the last remaining bugs ironed out in the next week or so.
Distortion correction only works with 1440p. I have had this camera for about a year now. It works great when you just stretch the video to 16:9 with distortion correction on. Like I said, DOES NOT WORK WITH ANY OTHER MODE, REGARDLESS OF WHAT IT SAYS IN THE RUNCAM APP
Just have a look at the Config File on SD Card and you will know what Settings are actual used in your Cam... you coul also use different SD Cards with different settings for flight ... makes it also easy to use ... only downside will be the wrong date&time that is saved also in config file.
JB, surely if you want to know what setting you last put on the cam, all you would have to do is look at the app. Great review by the way and I'm looking forward to testing my Runcam 5 soon ( she's on the way )

I really thought the box 2 would kill it considering the Legend 3 they had years ago was so close to perfect. The weight of the runcam 5 is pretty killer. Im stocked up on session 5's currently :) But If the runcam had a 2.7K "corrected" 30fps resolution id buy one just to give it a try. Good comparison!
What about the bitrate at a given resolution? How do they compare to each other and a GoPro session. I often read that moat cameras have horrible bitrates at 4k
They're all way too low. They set it low because people complain about lost footage and break-ups when using cheap low performing SD Cards, rather then allowing us to have a 'High performance card required' checkbox for higher data rates.
If you’re using after effects etc, you could also just use the linear stretched video then place a warp effect on the top that squeezes Image in the center
i'm all over the place trying to decide, every other review i watch makes one look better than the other, even the caddx4k is tempting if only the hd cam was standalone or higher up than the fpv cam.
In terms of white balance I had a similar problem with the Gitup Git2p. Was very disappointed until I set manual white balance. With these cheaper cameras I think it's always necessary to play with each and every setting for best image quality. Thanks for the video.

I noticed on the Box 2 that turning sharpness to "low" gives me the same results as turning it to "high" using the latest firmware. I think there are still bugs in the Firmware that need to be fixed. The least sharpening I can get out of this camera is on "medium". Maybe its just my camera or my eyes, but I have been fiddling around with it all day and to me "low" and "high" on the sharpness look the same. Best image I got out of it was at 2.5k 60FPS Supervision sharpness "medium", color "low", contrast "low", WDR "on", ISO "400", exposure "+0.5". Also I noticed that the camera achieves only a maximum of 52Mbps and never the advertised maximum of 62Mbps. Thereafter used the older GoPro Studio (version 2.5.10.4851) to get correct Superview into the video even if it is a hassle as you have to convert the video once more.
i just purchased a gopro hero 5 session on ebay for $149.99 but along with it i also purchased the square trade insurance that was $14.99 for a year now that i think about it i should have gone for a longer insurance policy but im sure this camera wont last a year as im still crashing from time to time. the last time i crashed i was doing a power loop and got to close to mother nature and ended up having to remove my 4 in 1 cable and reinstall it to get power back to fc as well as re-solder a few wires that broke off from camera to vtx but my quad still lives and fly's like a champ currently working on editing the videos to upload. thanks for the review. i would have purchased the runcam 5 had i not stumbled across this gopro. im also very aware that i could have just gone to best buy and bought a hero 7 for $299.
I hated the idea of putting 7 Black on the quad aftee destroying session, but man once I tried it, I am not going back. It performs better and the hypersmooth is nice, it removes those last small details I could never polish because of my shaky hands. So, it is what it is.
Does the Box 2 even have a 4:3 mode? They only seem to offer 16:9 with either the cropped vertical frame or the linear stretched 4:3. I can't seem to find a way to record in 4:3 in order to apply the superview script to the footage. Seems I'd have to take the stretched 4:3, de-stretch it to 4:3 then apply the superview script.
Runcam looks the pick of the two, I agree. However, for the same money, GoPro will sell the older Session 4, refurbished in the UK. It's 1440p can be post-stretched to a sort of 1440p superview. I believe it will fit all the available session 5 cases. Can anybody give me a 2019 impression of the Session 4? I've looked up a few RUclips FPV videos and it looks pretty decent.
QR Code. very clever. I love the idea of printing out my 2 favorite settings on paper. Furthermore, there is no reason they couldn't make a "contrast qr code" and an "increment qr code" and a "decrement qr code". but it does get cumbersome fast. You could also make a settings interrogate qr code, like, am I on this setting? beep yes or no. Thats not very user friendly, but there may be an awesome interface in there that I cant quite imagine yet.

Hi Joshua. I am having trouble getting the superview app you linked in the video description installed and working. I have tried installing it per the instructions on the github page but I have never downloaded an ffmpeg before. Is there a video or set of instructions that you recommend to get this thing working?
I am curious what you think about refurbished gopros. There is refurbished gopro hero5 sessions on amazon for $125. To me this seems like a good deal but I'm wondering what your thoughts are about it. Thank you for the reply if I get one!!
Great video but there is something important to consider. A lot of people are using After Effects Reelsteady to smooth the footage and make beautiful video. Gopro is sneaky and they've snuck in the GYRO/accelerometer data that is encrypted into the video. (Only on Gopro 5 and up) So what does that mean? The software now uses hardware data in combination with the software and AI to smooth out the footage. (Hence why the Hero 7 hypersmooth is so good) Neither runcam or foxxer offers this gyro data in it. Which is a shame.
To be honest, I left image stabilization out of the review. Runcam doesn't have it at all. In general, if you want high quality stabilization you have to do it in post, or HyperSmooth is quite good. But other than that, all the in-camera stabilization is better left off in my humble opinion.
Thanks for the hints. Great idea to print the QR Codes, you can also take 3 screenshots in your phone gallery with all settings and the QR Code, easy access and saves the planet ^_^
Has anyone experienced I think it's a failsafe but an awful one. The Runcam 3s wifi interfering with the quad and drops out the sky. Happend to me a couple of times with runcam wifi on the quad drops out the sky when the wifi is off it's fine?
This is why the qr code system is brilliant. I have failsafed from forgetting to turn off wifi on my yi. If your radio is on 2.4ghz then the QR code is just a safer way to fly.
That sounds like the exact same issue that caused fly-aways on Phantom 2 with Hero 3 and Hero 4 cameras wifi. DJI moved the TX/Rx up to 5.8 to prevent it.
Distortion correction? Really? Needs barrel correction, to turn that 1440p 4:3 into rectilinear 16:9, where only the corners are 'chopped off' due to how it manipulates the image. All my Hawk 5 HD videos have been recorded with the full 4:3 sensor of my Xiaomi Yi and then barrel corrected (straight lines are straight again, not all bent out of shape, especially Superview, which IMHO is ugly)
Thank you, but there's no real reduction in FOV with the barrel correction technique, here's a comparison between what the Xiaomi Yi records (its full 4:3 sensor scaled to 1920x1080) and what it looks like after the barrel correction filter has done its thing: haku.co.uk/pics/BarrelCorrected.jpg
Impressive image from the RunCam, close enough to the GoPro for me to consider it. The Foxeer's image is still way too cool/blue for my tastes (seems to be a running theme with Foxeer's products). The lack of the LCD on the RunCam would be really annoying though. Even with the GoPro, you only get a subset of the available options on the LCD, and that is annoying enough. I'd like to see a "premium" version of this camera with an LCD... and make it waterproof too. I'd pay extra. I will say that the QR code feature is awesome and very innovative though :).
That is a mistake that resulted from copy/pasting the text. Sorry about that. The Runcam cannot lock ISO. If you check the audio, you'll see I say it correctly, but the text is incorrect.
Great video. But I have committed to Gopro, not session, but the Hero 7. I just try not to crash a lot. Si vis pacem, para bellum. Hope for the best, be prepared for the worst.

I have tried installing it per the instructions on the github page but I have never downloaded an ffmpeg before. Is there a video or set of instructions that you recommend to get this thing working?
Runcam 5 for me still flying my go pro 4 though.
DroneMatesFPV hehe i fly GoPro hero 3 black
Is there a way to get the camera to have longer files? It seems to break them up into 3min files.
you got a bent prop, jb? you had some little twitches in there.
The foxeer footage looks so muddy compared to the RC
Hey Joshua how about a shot of your qr codes for us to try out
Runcam 5 for $99 on amazon with asurion protection plan. Hopefully asurion doesnt screw you over.
I’m just getting back into FPV. Why did the mobius style cameras fall out of favor?
Mobius.... maaan I don't heard this word for a long time.. But was a great camera
9:48 contrast is medium not low like you said.
Great video man. Thanks
Correct. I misspoke but I fixed the title.
I am curious what you think about refurbished gopros. There is refurbished gopro hero5 sessions on amazon for $125. To me this seems like a good deal but I'm wondering what your thoughts are about it. Thank you for the reply if I get one!!
Yeah heck yeah go for it.
(Hence why the Hero 7 hypersmooth is so good)
Neither runcam or foxxer offers this gyro data in it.
Does any of them support 24 at 1080p?
What are you‘re improved settings on the runcam 5?
They're shown in the video. Look at 9:00.
I am asking for a video on how to use the Free application that makes SuperView 1440p

I still have 2 Session 4's and they still work great.
Surely you would of thought they would test b4 they sold them?
Can either of them connect to a VTX?
Distortion correction? Really?
Needs barrel correction, to turn that 1440p 4:3 into rectilinear 16:9, where only the corners are 'chopped off' due to how it manipulates the image. All my Hawk 5 HD videos have been recorded with the full 4:3 sensor of my Xiaomi Yi and then barrel corrected (straight lines are straight again, not all bent out of shape, especially Superview, which IMHO is ugly)
I've seen your barrel correction, and it's good, but to me the reduction in FOV is not worth it. I'd rather have wide FOV with distortion.
Your settings say ISO locked at 400 for runcam 5, but there is no ISO option in the app. How do i lock it?
You cannot. I say the option correctly in the voiceover but the text on screen was copy/pasted incorrectly.
@@JoshuaBardwell okay cool cheers:)
thanks for the demo
Thanks Bardwell helping me decide for my very first camera to record for my very first video. Always been sketchy on breaking a GoPro. 🤪
2nd the firefly and it's 15 grams
Thanks for that! I’m really going to check that camera out! Hell yeahs! 👍🏻
But but, I love my gopro session 5😂😎😋
Impressive image from the RunCam, close enough to the GoPro for me to consider it. The Foxeer's image is still way too cool/blue for my tastes (seems to be a running theme with Foxeer's products). The lack of the LCD on the RunCam would be really annoying though. Even with the GoPro, you only get a subset of the available options on the LCD, and that is annoying enough. I'd like to see a "premium" version of this camera with an LCD... and make it waterproof too. I'd pay extra. I will say that the QR code feature is awesome and very innovative though :).
Hey, Joshua, how you set the ISO to 400, think i don t have this possebility on my cam
That is a mistake that resulted from copy/pasting the text. Sorry about that. The Runcam cannot lock ISO. If you check the audio, you'll see I say it correctly, but the text is incorrect.
plz tell me about fpv camera that thus not curve on result, if so plz tell me that name
Great video. But I have committed to Gopro, not session, but the Hero 7. I just try not to crash a lot. Si vis pacem, para bellum. Hope for the best, be prepared for the worst.
How did you set the ISO for the Runcam5? I can't see any settings for that.
It can't be set. I copy/pasted the title over from the previous camera and accidentally left the ISO line in. Everything else is accurate.
@@JoshuaBardwell ah okay, thanks for the answer.
I don't see a setting to change ISO in the RunCam app
There isn't one. That screen text was copied from the GoPro but I forgot to remove that line.
Joshua Bardwell Ok no problem! Thanks for the quick reply. I love these settings
how dare you throw go pro hero 7 black like that xD
