    On today's home front very little thought is given to throwing a load of laundry into the machine, stacking the dishes into the dishwasher, and quickly running the vacuum before jumping into the car for a quick trip to the store to pick up dinner. Washing machines, dishwashers, vacuums, automobiles, and numerous other machines are more or fewer givens as accessories to contemporary life. Of course, some people do not possess these accouterments, but, most can be rented or used at commercial facilities. Whether they are owned or let, the power to operate these various machines is obligingly available. At the end of the 20th century, these types of machines and the power to run them have become integral parts of modern life.

    My mom grew up during the Great Depression, so she frequently talked about what life was like then. She talked about ice boxes, and of the ice man who came to the neighborhood delivering free ice blocks. Until now, I’d never seen photos of them showing all the compartments. Thanks for uploading this!

    With hand-turned washing machines and hand-pumped vacuum cleaners, women back then didn't need to go to a gym for exercise. Great video; I wish i had one of those gorgeous wooden ice-boxes and wood stoves to display in my home!

      caspence56 Also most people back then didn't have cars yet, and most stores were nearby or local and they had to walk everywhere so fridges were smaller because they only got what they needed and were very expensive. That's why most of the population back then wasn't over weight xD

      Yup, very true. Nowadays folks go to work all hours to afford all these modern appliances so that they don't have so much housework to do, then they have to work longer hours to afford it, and since nowadays people generally work in offices they then get fat so they have to spend money on a gym. And to be able to afford that they have to work longer hours - sitting in an office - getting fatter...
      Logic is out the window nowadays.

      @@ssfinch4761 the 1st refrigerators were essentially coolers where you had to have ice delivered. and were not in use until railroads made it possible to move huge quantities of ice

      They are still around but made of plastic nowadays. Look out for Wonder Wash or Eco Wash. They are hand cranked so need no electricity. The technology is very old. They don't come with a mangle any more though, one now has to buy a separate spinner. A mangle would be better!
      I use an Eco Wash when my washing machine breaks down, until I can get it fixed. Eco Wash works amazingly well but since it's plastic, it's very flimsy and doesn't last long.

    no wonder our foremothers had biceps like gorgeous george (or for the younger crowd here, Dwayne 'the rock' Johnson). as for the cook stoves, after high school and before i realized i had to go back to college, i lived up in the mountains with my friend. she had electricity for lights but that was it. two seater outhouse, windlass pump or natural spring for water, and a wood cookstove. took me a long time to master that beast while Loretta could get a flame going and start cooking within half an hour. after awhile, though, it was easy to figure out high, medium and low. definitely not a stove for people who want instant gratification.

    The picture of the air conditioner was great,,,wish mine looked like it,,,would match my house much better than the white ones we have to today. But I think most ppl have central air now days,,,yeah some of us are still in the "old days" lol
    I would love to have 1 of the old wood stoves,,,I'll stick with my more modern washer,,,refrigerator & vacuum lol
    It was awesome getting to see how much the things we think of as necessities have changed over the years,,,makes me wonder how different they all will be in 100 years.

    A well scripted video on times gone by. My grandparents used several of the appliances you showed...icebox (I remember the iceman coming and the coal delivery man/truck), coal cooking stove, toaster. Much simpler and usually happier times for sure. As always thank you for sharing!

    If you look closely at the white ceramic toaster you'll see that instead of a plug it has a screw in socket. People didn't have many wall sockets so it screwed into a light fixture (electrolier).

    Bet the 1909 toaster would be in a museum now, though if you were doing a traditional set-up you'd need to make sure either the tables had a rope barrier, or that you and electricians knew which light fittings to wire up! ( you could use modern style light fittings for us to see but traditional for the show piece, especially when restoration may ask for small differences to be shown in newer pieces.)

    I just turned 50 but saw that air conditioner in use as a child and many of these items in grandparents garage as a kid. Old black one ear piece cone shaped phone that weighed a lot. Glass milk bottles in metal box on stoop, those ice boxes w/latches, metal ice tray with handle, I've used those as a small child.This stuff was all still around hanging out in peoples houses or in their yard or garage in the early 1970s. New York City Suburbs. The stoves are still in use to this day, yes.

    Nipkow's was a MECHANICAL television, certainly a curiosity but not viable. The first fully ELECTRIC television was invented by 14 year old Philo Farnsworth in 1920. He dreamed up his own idea for electronic-rather than mechanical-television while driving a horse-drawn harrow at the family’s new farm in Idaho.
    Farnsworth wasn’t the first person to dream up television-but, importantly, he was the first person to find a way to make it work without ANY mechanical aspect.

    • @Kit_Bear
      @Kit_Bear 2 года назад

      John Logie Baird and many others contributed to the television. It wasn't just one person. Farnsworth made improvements to the invention by going for the CRT over the spinning disc type system. I suppose we could say that he invented the modern television but not television itself. It was a far superior system so we owe him that much.

    Lol! There are still a lot of all these around and in almost new conditions as some people still use them. I used at least 90%, of one or another if not most forms of these appliances including a salted meat dryer, a special wooden stove for canning/jarring some meats, as well as a smoker to cure meat or fish. And I am not THAT old lol! I guess people or some people just have kept by them in families for certain things that they are of better to use than some of the modern variety lol!😂. Sorry. I just find it kind of funny that they are listed as old items vintage items that people USED to use lol!

    Where would the ice come from?

    • @debbied7035
      @debbied7035 5 лет назад

      The nearest Ice House. Seriously, it was a regular business to cut huge slabs of ice off nearby lakes in the winter and put it in storage in a specialized warehouse for sale to households and businesses locally. The Ice House was built like a regular building except the walls were very thick double walls with several feet of sawdust in between for insulation. There are a few still around but not for ice (obviously). About 30 years ago one caught fire in a town nearby, it burned for days!.

    Flexible, not flixible. A "cable" is solid, not hollow, so the vacuum has a hose, hollow in the middle like a pipe.
