    Judging by what you did to the old house, this house will be beautiful.

  • @KaylaLahti

    I'd be cautious about wrapping the countertops. I currently live in an apartment with cheap laminate counters and I would kill to have a more durable material like you currently have (even with a few sparkles). Our countertops scratch easily, and I can't imagine any wrap material would be as durable or look as nice as the surface you have and would likely be more of a pain to clean. I do enjoy your renovation videos, and think you've got some great ideas for the rest of the house and can't wait to see the results.

      i was thinking the exact same thing would be a shame to cover real stone with a plastic film

    Guys, I strongly recommend you to hire an architect. They will give you ideas or suggestions that you probably haven’t thought of. Might seem expensive (not really) but at the it will save you money and your house will be better.

    • @meriumi
      @meriumi 2 года назад +3

      Agreed (not only as an architect) - with the changes you're planning on making (especially if you're touching any of the facades), it's also likely required. But with all the planning you've been up to, you're probably already aware of this.

    We just had a custom raised dog shower put in our mudroom. It is THE BEST investment we've ever made as dog owners. It has steps for the labradors to walk up and down and they just love it...almost as much as my back loves it!!

    Great ideas, however, we did have black furniture in the living room. It was striking but a nightmare to maintain. Would avoid wrapping working surfaces as well as it could scratch relatively easily. But regardless what you choose, it will be splendid!

      Thank you. We agree, with all the light from the windows and lighter colours on the worktops and floor, we don't feel it would be too much. We have also looked into a potential roof lantern but that is further down the line of tasks to do 😂

    Option 2 with the dining space was exactly what I was thinking I would do when I watched your last video! Only suggestion/question I had is whether you planned on putting in a powder room in your pool area? That would be something I would think about especially if it is a long way to get to the nearest toilet in the main house. Looking forward to watching all of your projects!

    • @EmmaHill
      @EmmaHill  2 года назад +1

      We probably won't put a toilet in there as its not a huge distance back into the house and the downstairs toilet but we have considered a shower area if we can connect into the existing wastes 👍

    Love the wrapping the cupboards and would do that first then decide on the quartz. I can't imagine it would look good on quartz or stand up. With the darker cupboards the sparkle might not be so annoying. Also as someone who did same flooring through out, wood not so good in the entrance, bathrooms and kitchens. Got a few good dents in the kitchen from dropping a knife and other things.

    • @EmmaHill
      @EmmaHill  2 года назад +1

      We are used to having laminate throughout the house (as we had it everywhere in our old house, except the bathroom) and apparently this type of flooring is more durable so hopefully it will be ok 👍

    The kitchen is perfect, I think the gloss is the most easy to maintain, looks clean and give a luxus touch. A matter of personal taste. I had an amazing glow dark grey kitchen, and then a glow white beautiful one, they were my favorites. , now I have a matt brownish and wood, I prefer the shinny ones.

    Hey Emma,
    Going to look lovely when you're all done. Loved your last home. The luxury vinyl flooring that you've been looking at is really good. The only thing is the more texture or grain... I found really hard to clean when I'm mopping, have to go over it quite a few times to get it to lift off from the divots in the vinyl. Thats the one thing I would change if I could. Hope that helps 💜
    All the best for your renos

    We call the flooring LVP - luxury vinyl plank in the US. It is very popular where I live because it is so durable - perfect for dog people. I am most excited about the dog bath in the utility space. I dream of a dog bath. This house is going to be such an amazing project. Looking forward to watching how you transform it!

      Yes we have been dreaming of one for a while. We tried to fit one in our old home but it didn't quite work out and wouldn't have really made sense where we were considering having it, so very excited to be able to fit one into this space 😍

  • @stellatron

  • @saramathews1069
    @saramathews1069 2 года назад

    Emma in your utility room get a pole near to the ceiling that you hang washing from - either over the actual pole, I dry all my bedding like this in the winter, or on hangers. Honestly so useful and much more environmentally friendly than lots of tumble drying.
    Very happy excited by all your wonderful plans

    • @EmmaHill
      @EmmaHill  2 года назад

      We do plan to get a heat pump dryer (which are apparently much more efficient) but we will also have freestanding airers too that we currently use - as well as a line outside for when the weather is half decent 😂. We have seen the ceiling mounted dryers which we are also considering but that will be decided in the final details 👍

  • @misiaalbert8214
    @misiaalbert8214 2 года назад +7

    Just my two cents, you might have already done this, in which case, ignore. But, I think you two loved your grey kitchen because you installed it at the tail end of the Grey trend (same with the previous homeowners of your new home) but now grey, in such broad applications, seems tired and dull. Now we're in the Black/White (with warm woods) trend which feels fresh but I'm not sure wrapping the entire kitchen in black will give you the effect you're looking for. Since the ceilings are standard height and there aren't windows in the kitchen itself, I think you will find it will be rather cavernous. Why not try black wrap on the lowers and a lighter or white wrap on the uppers to help the room feel taller and brighter? Any of those flooring samples (except the one that was at the bottom and then far right when the camera moved) would be lovely. You may find the existing counters work well with such a design, twinkle and all. I think Best of luck, it will be fun to watch regardless!

    Excited to see progress on your lovely new house.
    BUT - I'm concerned with an all black kitchen. It will close the space in so much and black will show a great deal of spots well !
    Putting vinyl over the quartz will not be antibacterial ! Keep the quartz. . but please choose a lighter cabinet color.

    im glad your not knocking a door into that lovely kitchen good move. Also i think knocking the kitchen cupboards on the other side would be a waste they are so handy n look good too you could use that part of the kitchen as a drinks area etc.

  • @clumsywithwords
    @clumsywithwords 2 года назад +9

    So cool with the changes :)
    One thing to keep in mind: when you “wrap” a light surface with dark colour, if you scratch it a bit deeper, you will see the light material underneath. Same with the floors, tiles and any other material that doesn’t run throughout and is instead composed of layers.

    • @EmmaHill
      @EmmaHill  2 года назад +3

      We actually hadn't considered that, so thank you. But then saying that, there are scratches and marks on the current units and with it being gloss they stick out like a sore thumb 🙈 We will just have to steer our niece and nephews away from the units 😆

    Emma and Simon this is the first home renovation video on youtube that I’ve watched all the way through!! It’s because you both are so realistic, warm and real, I loved how measured and thoughtful you are about your decisions. all looks exciting. great ideas. Also, one could have the Utility room where you propose your Study to be. The garage could then be off your extended dining area, which would make the soft furnishing flow, and doors when left open, would lend itself to more space. Washing could go straight out to the garden and your could build some lovely cupboards shelving, baskets, etc. However, both will look great and LOVE your kitchen idea - cant wait to see the results

    You have so much work ahead, but, I can't wait to see what you and Simon do to the spaces. When renovating the gym/pool area, maybe think of having a nice shower area installed, its convenient to have an area where you can rinse before going in and coming out of the pool. It will be interesting to see how the vinyl wrap turns out, completely new concept to kitchen remodeling. This is going to be exciting to watch. Congrats on the new home!

      We have thought of that, but I don't know how we would connect the waste water into an outlet - we will have to get a plumber to have a look 👍

    Oh gosh I'd be so daunted by the scale of the work required. But I feel you and Simon are equal to the challenge. Can't wait to see the progression of the works ahead.
    Simon and his hanging baskets tho'.....😆😆😆😆

      😂 can't take him anywhere 🙈 Luckily we knew we ere in for a lot of work when we decided to proceed with the sale so we were prepared. And as we are giving ourselves a lot of time it takes the pressure off and makes it much more fun 🤩

    Go for a full-size backsplash in your countertop material, it’s well worth the extra. I had it done with my rock countertop material, it’s beautiful and so durable.

    I would never cover the quartz countertops for a plastic. You would not be able to place anything hot on it. It’s a very nice house with lots of potential.

    • @EmmaHill

      We always use trivets anyway so wouldn't be a problem for us, plus they wrap is able to stand certain temperatures. But.... that being said, some of our other plans have been delayed due to lack of available trades and so the plans for the kitchen may change slightly. We are just looking at options now 👍

  • @DerbyCollegeSU

    An option to think about if not already considered would be to resell the quartz worktop.
    Alternatively consider a composite overlay rather than the wrapping which would be more hardwearing and durable for the heavy use worktops get.
    Love all your ideas
    Would definitely put your individual room ideas on skillshare for an architect or interior designer to share their opinion maybe in exchange for some editing or tech advice from you or Simon.
    It’s good to have your content and the dogs back on the feed.
    Good luck!

    Love option 2 for the dining room expansion and smaller utility. The wrapped cabinets sounds interesting and will probably hold up well considering you don’t have littles to mess it up, but I wouldn’t wrap the countertop. They take quite a bit of abuse and use and I think you’d soon find that the vinyl will show wear quickly. I think once you wrap the cabinets, that bit of sparkle will not be so bright and you will eventually not notice it at all. The quartz is quite nice and I think it would look beautiful against the black wrap.

    Hi Emma and Simon, this house renovation is going to be amazing to follow. Your last house was beautiful and I can just imagine how this house will turn out. I’m so so sorry about little Bean. Even though at 17 you were expecting it sooner or later, it’s still a big shock for you and you will never be prepared. I just lost 2 cats in the space of 3 weeks, we had them both for 15 years. The last one was caused by teeth cleaning, the anaesthetic damaged her kidneys so bad that she had to be PTS. I’m totally devastated and feel so guilty. I’m so glad that you are back doing renos. Love your channel 💜

    Hi Emma - you and Simon have some wonderful ideas going forward on your home renovation - who knew you could cover kitchen units with vinyl (I have grey gloss kitchen units so share your pain!) - I'd watch out for Simon though and his affection for the glittery, sparkly stuff - you could end up with a Strictly Come Dancing kitchen!😱 I'm really looking forward to the renovation vids - the crittal doors sound fab - I'm off to research these! Also looking forward at some stage to watching the walk-in closet build. Sending you, Simon and the fur babies lots of love at what has been a difficult time. 💕X

      As we have had some other work delayed we are actually reconsidering the worktops (and potentially a slight change to the unit layout) but this is still in the early stages. 👍
