After less than 5 minutes worth of time it works perfect less than the need for a new battery. Thanks for the great tutorial, simple and to the point, worked like a charm.

@@Chan_Prado I did consider that, I have treadmill lubricant I could use... But it is very viscous and applying it blindly like this I was worried it would get in to other parts.
WD-40 isn't a long-term lubricant! Beware... I'm a PC technician and I've used WD-40 before to fix a stuck Fan. It came back weeks later with the same problem. My psp went from making horrible squealing noises to whisper quiet after doing this. I really thought I was gonna have to tear it apart, but this saved it!
This method is perfect. I seen other people on here literally dissemble the entire psp just to grease up a gear. I'll be taking your route if my psp ever begins to make this noise.
Worked like a charm. Thank you. Took only about 5 minutes. I removed the tape with some fine tip tweezers, filled a small cup with WD-40, then dipped a Q-Tip into the WD-40 and spread around the motor.

This is the most helpful video for the 2000 psp. Every video has it being taken apart and I don't really want to do that. My silver one was making that god awful sound and it has the black tape cover you mentioned. With a pair of small pointy plyers I pulled it up and was able to grease the wheel on the left, also the small tiny rail the laser is on and now my beautiful PSP is quiet again!
Thank you so much, the umd was freezing/crash anytime I was nearly moving my 2004. Now I can shake it like crazy and the umd keeps running smoothly. THANK YOU !
You’re life saver!! Thank you! It was really easy to follow and you explained everything perfectly clear. I had to peel the sticker with tweezers and it didn’t take too long. No more noisy sounds
Thank you! I just tried out a game i picked up and my trusty ol psp's drive was screeching. I applied oil to the worm gear and it fixed most of it, then found your vid, didn't know about putting it on the back left, fixed all noise, thanks again!
This worked really well, my PSP went from worryingly screeching to quietly making zipping sounds (I hadn't used my PSP in years, so I forgot what it's supposed to sound like, but wow does this sound so much healthier now!). It was pretty easy to do, too, especially with a PSP Street where you can just take the whole back panel off. I saw another guide recomend sewing machine oil, I used that instead of 3-in-1 because I don't think that's available were I live... Worked like a charm, been enjoying diving back into the Patapon trilogy!
This worked thanks. I used olive oil, obviously I don't recommend anyone doing the same lol! I found shaking the psp in different directions helped move the oil into place as well. I'm so glad the back didn't have to come off because it's got that genuine seal on.

Lol, I feel so old, but I'm glad to see (in the comments) that i aint the only one going back to one of their childhood consoles. PS: I air sprayed mine. Noise is still there but to a much tolerable level, some might even say "normal" 🤷.
Thanks for the video man. Had exactly the same thing on my psp 2000 that just arrived from Japan. After several drops in the hole it sounds great again.
Wow I will have to try this. My PSP model is doing the same thing and because of this it locks up and makes the screeching sound. Thanks for the video.
Just a note: DO NOT squirt oil directly into the PSP! Squirt some on a q-tip or another swab and then use that to lube up the gears! If you squirt directly it has a decent chance of leaking into your screen and ruining it!
I think that it is the best tutorial I’ve ever watched, sounds like new (I made it with WD-40 it replaces oil very good) I also didn’t have to take of that sticker and also I added the oil only on the motor and it works perfectly👌
Nobody has asked or answered this question: Is it okay to just leave it screeching if you don't mind the noise? I want to know if the noise will actually lead to any kind of damage or stop functioning if you never put any oil on it. Will the system eventually stop reading discs if this problem is left unfixed?
This is so damn strange, I decided to take a look finally at this issue I had with my EXACT SAME model and color of PSP as yours. I got it years before this but when I bought it and played a UMD it screeched at me XD Thanks! Lmaoo
Questions is that sticker not doing anything? I assume Sony placed there for a reason maybe to hold it down applying more pressure... So it doesn't need to be there?
The sticker is there to mostly keep dirt and crap out of the motor, but Sony must not have thought it helped much since half of 3000s never came with a sticker. It doesn’t need to be there, but the only reason to remove it would be to oil up the loud drive
@@blakeblundell9001 thanks for the reply makes senses I just checked mine it had the sticker, my drive makes a little noise but not too much but now I know how fix that issue 👍
Got what was supposed to be a brand new Vibrant Blue 3000 that sounds like this. Seller then admitted it was used. I should not have to do this but looks like I will - the “Vice City Stories” game is unplayable. How often does this method need to be applied? I’m concerned the oil may gunk up eventually. Does the sticker have to be put back in place?
You’d use this method once and you’ll be good to go for years. I’ve never had an issues after applying on hundreds of systems. Don’t put the sticker back on, since it doesn’t serve much purpose.
Thanks for this vid! I have a question - have you seen negative affects with using that much oil on these components? For example, maybe the oil getting to other components within the PSP that it shouldn't? This video was uploaded two years ago so curious if you're still using it normally and the lubrication is still holding up with no problems. Thank you in advance!
Oil typically just gets on the disc’s casing if the excess isn’t all wiped off after getting it quiet again. The oil mostly just needs to get in the little hole of the umd motor, and if a couple tries of that doesn’t fix it then the gears at the underside need to be lubricated and checked for any debris that might have gotten stuck in them. I just fix PSP’s every day so I wouldn’t know how the long term use goes, but I haven’t heard of any long term issues with my method on RUclips or Reddit
Yer a wizard, Blake! Added light 3-in-1 oil to the UMD motor and it worked after two tries. Didn't need to add anything to the worm gear or white wheel 👏
Considering the laser drive is right next to the exposed part of the UMD, you should use as little oil as possible so it's not thrown onto the disc. A high-quality precision bearing oil would be better than 3-in-1 or WD-40, but maybe not worth the expense if this would be your only use for it.
It’s best to only put a little oil in the umd motor hole, since that’ll fix the vast majority of movement problems. I only ever add a little oil to the worm gear area if several attempts with just the motor don’t fully fix the movement or sounds. So this video is a bit outdated for the process that I currently use
I did not have WD-40 so I used Gun oil on a q-tip and put it on both the motor and the disc reader assembly and now it doesn't read discs at all. I can still hear the motor running but it can't read any disc. What do I do now?
@@mooparr it’s possible too much was used and now it’s struggling to move. If that’s the case, you could either use a little bit of compressed air or maybe a cotton swab or get rid of some excess. Some oil can also get on the outer edge of the game disc and make it harder to read
@@blakeblundell9001 I tried swabbing the entire area dry again and it didn't help. I've also used multiple discs and they all failed. Don't have any compressed air on me but it's sounding like I'll have to go and get some and if that doesn't work I'll just have to buy a new one...
Hi Blake, i have a psp 3004 model and for a while i haven't playing it but now i decided to check it out, the psp was working but it was not recognising any UMD so i've followed your instructions and now its working perfectly thanks. I have a question tho, that protection tape that you removed i had it as well and did removed it but have you try to cover again the motor with tape or not?
Would this method also fix it if it's making a whirring loud sound while playing a game that doesn't skip or anything? Mine does that and it's highly annoying
If it’s a 1000, your magnet on the spinner may have started to bulge and breakdown. If it’s a 2000/3000, it could either be the casing around your disc making contact with the disc, or the drive just need to be lubricated
Thanks for uploading this video it worked out perfectly I was able to fix 2 of my psp handhelds question with this fix will it be fine now or it is temporary fix will the oil dry up and it go back the way it is again? By me using the multipurpose oil I used like in the video?
Enough time hasn’t passed since this video for feedback to come out on durability, but I’d say it’ll be good for many years. It would be more likely to get loud again if the umd drive compartment is exposed to a lot of debris.
after i lubricated the gears (also underneath the drive), i see now much more pixels, so the resolution is quite off. i did not disconnect any ribbon cables. maybe i should check them ? any other ideas ?
Definitely don't disassemble your PSP just to oil it! For those having a 2000 model like me: like mentioned in the video, there is a black plastic covering the lower part of the mechanism, precisely where it's more likely for the screech to come from. This plastic is glued to the metal parts. It's harder than a normal tape, but more flexible than a hard plastic, kind of like a photography film. This cover protrudes (it's 3D) and seems to hold the disc in place, or at least it may help, so I'm not convinced about removing it. What I did: locate the part of the black plastic that covers the circular motor; with a sharp and thin metal object, open (don't cut) this part of the tape, revealing the motor, just enough for someone else to introduce the cotton bud soaked in oil. My black plastic looks almost untouched after the procedure. I had to do it twice for the screeching to stop.
After i removed the sticker the psp no longer reads the games and even after cleaning the glue stuck to the wheel with some alcohol the game still does not get read, the little icon on the bottom left does shows up tho. The laser looks fine and still goes up and down with the red light, any solutions?
So initially it was loud, but would still read games? Now it’s quiet and won’t read games? If so, you may have gotten some oil on the lens, or too much oil could have gotten in the umd motor (with the hole). I’d also suggest checking your game disc for oil that might have accumulated on the outer edge and that can make the disc stop reading, so you’d just have to wipe it down.
It could eventually seize up the motor and prevent it from reading games at all, but at that point you could always lubricate to fix. So it’s not a rush
Hey, thanks for your tutorial. What kind of oil I should use? My PsP 3004 started a couple of days ago doing this horrible screeching sound 😢. It’s still capable to read the disc but I’m worry it will not last a lot. So I’m thinking to try your way but I don’t know what oil I will search for…
I typically like to start scraping it off at the back right corner and then pinch it with a finger while continuing to peel it off. You can also start from other corners to get the job done. You won’t damage the motor at all
@@blakeblundell9001 thank you ive managed to take it out but i have to buy the oil still and that area is very glueish right now, will it affect the game if i play it? how do i dry it off the glue that stayed off the sticker until i put oil in it? can i use alcohol tips too?
It won’t damage your game if you play it right now. You don’t need to remove any of the glue residue from where the sticker was, since it’ll gradually become less sticky and won’t impact anything. It’s best to use a qtip to apply the oil. If the sticky residue really bothers you, then you could apply something like goo-gone with a qtip and then wipe it off when it’s done
You’ll want to compress the umd activators with the door open to verify that the laser is coming on. There’s a lever to the left of the spinner and sometimes a black pin at the top right corner of the umd door. If the drive sounds like it can move and isn’t struggling to and the laser comes on, then you likely just need to replace the umd drive.
04:17 That is quiet? I haven't used a PSP for 14 years and got a used one today. It sounds exactly like yours after the lubrication. So some noise is normal?
Yeah that’s what I do daily on the systems that I fix. The later 3000 versions didn’t even come with a sticker over the motor, so it’s not an important piece
I am stuck, i don't want to break the plastic part inside of my psp but it's screaming in pain, how do i take the black plastic out EDIT: Nevermind i was able to pry it up with a tool and grease the gears without taking the plastic out. Thank you so much for the help!

Excellent! Simple and worked great! I had previously tried lubing that worm gear but didn't know about the other spots. Thank you very much :)
Worked like a charm. Thanks much!
Actual lifesaver oh my god thank you
I can finally play umd games without giving myself a heart attack! Hahha preciate you
Does this issue affect performance? My psp 1000 plays the games well otherwise.
It could eventually seize up the motor and prevent it from reading games at all, but at that point you could always lubricate to fix. So it’s not a rush
Worked nicely, just added a bit of corn oil on the rear servo, and I know... But it works fine!
Thank you. It's been very helpful for my PSP
Hey, thanks for your tutorial. What kind of oil I should use? My PsP 3004 started a couple of days ago doing this horrible screeching sound 😢. It’s still capable to read the disc but I’m worry it will not last a lot. So I’m thinking to try your way but I don’t know what oil I will search for…
3 in 1 oil, that’s the one I use and it’s pretty cheap. I’m pretty sure you can find it in a Walmart or a hardware store
@@blakeblundell9001 Thank you very much for your answer I will definitely try this and i will come back to respond the result.
I used olive oil and works!
I used 4 stroke motor oil, it's all I had😅 wroked but we'll see if it fucks my psp up or something
Thank you so much! My psp3000 has finally stop whining!
The sticker doesnt want to come off at all and i dont wanna damage the motors any idea besides scrapping it off?
Thank you, im also Afraid of the Noise. But it also worked💪
My PSP UMD drive spins for a little bit and then it stops… It shows that its reading the game but it doesn’t show up for me to play it. Any help ??
You’ll want to compress the umd activators with the door open to verify that the laser is coming on. There’s a lever to the left of the spinner and sometimes a black pin at the top right corner of the umd door. If the drive sounds like it can move and isn’t struggling to and the laser comes on, then you likely just need to replace the umd drive.
Thanks a million Blake!!!
04:17 That is quiet? I haven't used a PSP for 14 years and got a used one today. It sounds exactly like yours after the lubrication. So some noise is normal?
Yeah you’ll always get some sounds from the umd drive. That level of sound is what you should get with the lubricated drive
@@blakeblundell9001 Sick. But good, so nothing to do here. :d
Much appreciated brother!
Thank You Very Much, You Are Great 🙂It's Working👍🏾 PERFECT
Thanks mate, absolute legend! My mum thinks your voice is hot too.
Is it safe to take off the sticker and permanently leave it off the UMB drive?
Yeah that’s what I do daily on the systems that I fix. The later 3000 versions didn’t even come with a sticker over the motor, so it’s not an important piece
hi i have a question, would it be bad if i used olive oil? or wd 40? I know that pretty weird sounding but i dont have all purpose oil laying around.
You could give it a try and see if it helps. I don’t think they’d ruin it
@@blakeblundell9001 ok thank you!
I am stuck, i don't want to break the plastic part inside of my psp but it's screaming in pain, how do i take the black plastic out
EDIT: Nevermind i was able to pry it up with a tool and grease the gears without taking the plastic out. Thank you so much for the help!
Just did this on my slim and nothing..is it even okay to take that sticker off?
Yeah the sticker doesn’t really do anything. Not all versions of 2000 or 3000 came with a sticker anyway
@@blakeblundell9001 thank you for the info I was worried there for a minute lol
I hate opening psps so thank you
