  • Day four of my six day trip with Jason Wish, traversing passages between Santee and Newberry on the Palmetto Trail in South Carolina. We started inside the unfinished Cook Mt./Boyd Passage and ended up thoroughly turned around. We called the coordinator for the sections we were on and were able to get back to the proposed trail eventually. After getting picked up 1.7 miles from the end, we were shuttled to the Fort Jackson Passage kiosk where we had left our food drops. After resupplying, we hiked through the Fort Jackson Passage until Gate 5 were we had to get off trail. We shuttled around the base walk to Gate 1 as we decided not to attempt to get to Gate 2, back to Gate 5 and then exit at Gate 1.We covered approximately 24 miles before crashing for the night at the Econolodge.
Fort Jackson Passage is 16.3 miles long. Capitol City Passage is 10.2 miles long. Each travel through the South Carolina Sandhills region.

I really enjoyed this. I've been trying to squeeze in a section hike for a few years and keep running into scheduling problems so it is nice to live vicariously through you. That was rather interesting with the water problem. You'd think someone would have already caught that. Looking forward to seeing day 5 & 6. See you on the next one!

Yessir, I really try to avoid having to get water from a ditch!
