Just found your channel and said "wow, this is pretty cool, a woman of color traveling and doing a channel". It didn't occur to me that you'd be greeted without welcome in so many parts of this country but having traveled and camped since I turned 18 and drove cross country for 2 months I guess as a white male it's a different scenario. It really hurts me to hear stories like this happening today, you seem like such a positive person. Anyways looking forward to your adventures... a few days after they happen.
It's hugely different. I had a minor issue years ago, before any of this was on general radar. I drove into a small town- was a college professor at that point. And a youngish white kid, basically accosted me rather aggressively and said "what are you doing here," or "why are you here?" Now it was a gas station so.... I at the time was more confident as there was no overt history of racism, so I pulled the age thing, like "ahhh excuse me?" and gave him a stern look, paused. Then calmly told him that I was going to a well know place in the area..." he waas kindof like "oh..." Not many black folks pass through I could tell.
@@YogaBlissDance How come pulling the age thing was not enough? It seems that telling him the well known destination of yours was justifying your presence. Why did he deserve that? I can see trying to quell a mob with that but I guess it just annoys me that color does not matter when you have to pull rank so to speak, because the lack of respecting elders has no color barrier nowadays.
@robwas Absolutely not trying to throw any shade your way. Just wondering if once you realized that she would not be greeted without welcome did you realize that that is part of why the label "white privilege" exists? I appreciate the honesty in your comment. It crossed my mind when I read it that is white privilege. You don't have to think about how you will be received. Obviously it is no fault of your own. I have read from monetarily poor white folk wondering where is their privilege. It is not an eceonomic thing they still have the same privilege you do. As one comedian said you have the complexion for the protection. Safe travels to you.
@@AAA-hv7nr Yeah but you know when things happen in the moments it’s hard to be all strategic or whatever I mean that’s exactly the problem I was relaxed, pulling into the gas station and then I suddenly was like tense because of this person approaching me and asking me you know like why am I there...
*Very good safety points. I was watching a documentary about a young black man who was killed in a known RURAL RACIST WHITE town in Omaha. He was there with his all white "friends" who left him there, claiming they thought he was riding with another friend after the party. They closed the case even though his death was ruled as undetermined. SMDH 🤦🏾♀️ He was clearly dragged to a ditch, both sneakers were thrown feet from the scene (one found on the opposite side of the road, etc. It's just so unfortunate and my heart breaks for his family. Please stay safe and thank you again for sharing these great safety tips!*
@@eg348 - *It was on Unsolved Mysteries on Netflix. The episode is called, "NO WAY HOME." Check it OUT if you get a chance. His name is Alonzo Brooks. 😢 The entire story is so heartbreaking. At the party, the white guys were calling him the n word and they started pushing back and forth. You have to view the show to see how he ended up at that house ALONE with no ride home. It is SAD. 😔 😢 This happened in 2004 but you know that town is probably just as bad now. People in that town are known to be racist. You definitely wouldn't want to be stranded in that area at night.* *P.S. - I just read online that the FBI has taken over the case and it has been reopened.* 👏🏽 👏🏽

My philosophy is when I come up to a new place, I make sure I have a good grasp of my surroundings, entrances and exits, etc. and stay aware of the people around me. After that, in the event of some kind of life threatening situation, I attempt the following in this order, and if one is unsuccessful, I move to the next as safely as possible: 1. Flee, if possible, and if not: 2. Hide, if possible, and if not: 3. Fight (use your surroundings to your advantage, wait your turn, strike to disable and/or kill ─ being armed certainly helps) When I say "wait your turn" I mean, wait until the right moment to strike. Because when a bad guy comes along, they will always have the advantage of surprise on their side. They'll almost always have the drop on you. So.. if you can't flee, and hiding doesn't work: Wait. Your. Turn.

You are so correct about other people trying to project their fear unto you. You are so correct about planning and researching the areas that you are visiting and passing through.
Thank you for a very positive mindful and real video about safety. This goes for everyone. Another tip for checking out towns is a site I check regularly is "City data.com". This site shows break down of population per age, race, income, education. Shows information about percentage of sex offenders (which is legally required for most to register in most states/towns), etc. But also how many grocery stores, convenient stores, malls, churches, parks, etc. Local events and times of year they occur ( great in case there is a festival going on when passing through and you'll know if the town will be full of visitors and spaces more challenging to find). They also give the crime statistics for all different types of crime from murders to burglaries, etc. The site also gives good maps and and pictures of the local area so you have good visual aids for the area. I traveled about 8 yrs for work in 3 to 6 months stints and always checked out city data before I would accept a contract in certain areas. Let me know what you think and safe travels my friend. Pets to the puppy, she is a good friend and protector
You are one smart cookie! I sure appreciate you and your great attitude. I pray that more of us white gals start standing beside our black sisters. Every single one of us in this world has an effect on equality.
This is awesome information for both males and females. Thank you for your service in both the Military and Law Enforcement, and thank you again for sharing what you’ve learned with the rest of the community! Cleo is awesome, and stay safe!
Good video. When my mom and I were traveling from CA to LA, we were stopped by the police and given the "what you 'gals' doin' out here" interrogation -- we are Black BTW. We were in an older model tan Chevy Astro (not an attention grabber). Nothing luxurious and you could see the interior. He never said why he stopped us. The whole trip we never exceeded 55 MPH (so not speeding). We were in Baton Rouge (black folk are not unique to the area). He told us we had to go to have our tags changed to LA right away while we were there (we had just barely entered the state). What!? We were not relocating. What!? Is that the law? No! Since we remained calm, he finally let us go after checking the registration. Your power is in your keeping calm.
I camp and backpack as a solo female too. I appreciate people saying I'm brave, but it's also kind of sad. It's even more discouraging when people tell me it's too risky. I'm not gonna let that crap keep me home. I always take precautions and carry a gun, bear spray, knife, or combination thereof. I love seeing other female solo travelers!
Continue to be truthful and don't mix words. Fear is a reality and being Black travelling solo is SERIOUS. I Pray but I also use Common Sense. Good Video. Stay Safe and careful God Bless.
This is great! I am building out a 1988 chevy van home to travel and work in film and tv and I have been worried bc I am a solo female traveler so I really want to make sure I take extra safety precautions. Thank you for making a video for fellow women. It can be a battle to be a woman in this world but we are so much safer if we have each other's backs
Also thank you for the safety tips! So many van lifers never mention the potential dangerous of van life even in the “reality of van life” videos safety barely comes up.
Thank you for your EXCELLENT advice. I love the discussion about fear and preparation that may prevent the use of weapons. I consider time spent watching your channel is time well spent. Be well.
Wow so many great tips. No one has been this real and thorough. I haven’t encountered anything scarier than unwanted attention/staring, but I’m always a little worried in those smaller towns. Greatest fear is not being able to find somewhere safe to rest, so I try to always stop in a larger city.

I love your videos! You’re obviously a strong, intelligent woman and you have such a zen vibe. I sent your video to my daughter. I have always told her as a female, you have to always be aware of your surroundings and listen to your gut. It doesn’t mean don’t live your life or never leave home..Just be aware and have a plan. As her mom, she probably thinks I am too paranoid or something. So to hear that same advice in a calm, matter of fact manner from someone who has professional experience protecting the public, someone who is living her best life is really is both helpful and inspiring.
I applaud you for keeping it real on both sides of traveling as a black woman and fighting being overcome by projected fears that impedes true peace and freedom. There's nothing wrong with being mindful, just as you said and as you've lived. You inspire me. 😊

I'm from down south so I'm use to the flags and signs and hate from people and strange people too. Stay packing and know where you're going and as you do this more often you'll know where it's safe to stop and chill and where not to. As women no matter what ethnicity we have to be extremely vigilant.
You are amazing, I am the proud mother of 3 Ugandans. They have never been to the US, we live in Japan. My kids were older at adoption. 6,12 and 16. I want my daughter to look at this lifestyle when she graduates highschool. Thank you
Thank you for speaking on safety. I’m considering van life, but as a woman of color these are concerns of mine. Love what you are doing, thanks for this insight.
What a lovely lady you are. I am glad you haven’t allowed anything to stop your adventures! I have felt discomfort in podunk towns too (although I am not a woman of color, but travel alone). I cannot agree more with having a dog as your first line of protection! 🐶❤️ On a recent trip, my dog barked at a man coming out of the bushes with his camera. I said she didn’t like hats, but the truth was that she didn’t bark at anyone else the whole weekend. WE LEFT IMMEDIATELY because I trust my dog’s instincts that something was not right. We also had the opportunity to help another lady traveller ... she got into my van without a peep from my dog. I trust my dog and she trusts me. Ladies, get an Australian Cattle Dog ... it’s like a smaller version German Shepherd. ☮️ and safe travels!
Thank You again for your insight... I'm binge watching your videos and am settling in for the night... You're speaking every thing that's on my mind... Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us.
I can’t wait to see your Channel grow, your story sickened me that people are like that still. I’m a white woman full time traveller in Scotland and I’ve never had a reason to be scared but I understand why you would and need to be :(- I just live in my bubble which makes it even more amazing that you are so chill and loving and took a lesson you shouldn’t have to from your experience and turned it into a reason to be safer. I could listen to your videos for ever! X
I'm so happy that you touched base on the racial or diversified aspect of solo travel. This has been a focus of my fear to even start. Thanks beautiful Lady! 🥰
I am not black and I still completely understand you. I am German, living in Texas with my profession is in small town very difficult. I learned to be "carry". We as women (any color) have to be more careful than man. Trust your guts.. and in case of bad towns, no place to feel safe drive to the next police station and ask if you can stay on their parking lot for the night
Thank you for speaking the truth and sharing how to travel safely. I am not a van traveler but have wondered how women who do travel alone stay safe. You have helped lots of women who are traveling solo. I pray for you all continuously.

Your videos bring me so much peace. I just listen and it makes me believe that I can go and travel too. I have certain family members that bring that fear into me because they're fearful and then I second guess myself but I know it's possible to do and to be happy while on the road traveling solo. Thank you for this video! Glad you're on youtube as not only a woman but a black woman traveler. God bless. Safe travels. 😊
So glad that you broke down the fear aspect and how important it is not to deter you but to signal you to awareness. We must claim our protection and power no matter what especially in these times. Love your content 💕✨✨

Yes, she's very brave I'm still hesitant about the van life due to some fears as a woman and a BW. It looks really fun and liberating though!
And a youngish white kid, basically accosted me rather aggressively and said "what are you doing here," or "why are you here?"
Now it was a gas station so....
@@AAA-hv7nr Yeah but you know when things happen in the moments it’s hard to be all strategic or whatever I mean that’s exactly the problem I was relaxed, pulling into the gas station and then I suddenly was like tense because of this person approaching me and asking me you know like why am I there...
lol your white bubble must be nice.
I just subscribed to get pointers but mainly to support a black life that matters🙏🏾👍🏽👌🏽✊🏽
There are some cameras on Amazon that will allow you to see your surroundings. They record as well, set to start if vehicle touched.
Which documentary, is it recent? Thanks
You definitely wouldn't want to be stranded in that area at night.*
*P.S. - I just read online that the FBI has taken over the case and it has been reopened.* 👏🏽 👏🏽
@@Nicole215 Thank you very much for sharing 💜 I will watch it 😢 Thank God the case is reopened... May Justice Be Done. God Bless his soul and all his family and loved ones and may he rest in peace 🙏
@@eg348 *Amen, I pray that his family finally get the answers they deserve. You're very welcome!*
@@Nicole215 Yes FBI is investigating.
My philosophy is when I come up to a new place, I make sure I have a good grasp of my surroundings, entrances and exits, etc. and stay aware of the people around me. After that, in the event of some kind of life threatening situation, I attempt the following in this order, and if one is unsuccessful, I move to the next as safely as possible:
1. Flee, if possible, and if not:
2. Hide, if possible, and if not:
3. Fight (use your surroundings to your advantage, wait your turn, strike to disable and/or kill ─ being armed certainly helps)
When I say "wait your turn" I mean, wait until the right moment to strike. Because when a bad guy comes along, they will always have the advantage of surprise on their side. They'll almost always have the drop on you. So.. if you can't flee, and hiding doesn't work: Wait. Your. Turn.
I love that "Thank you fear! And now that I am aware, I can make conscious decisions." Thank you for this video!
You speak with strength in your words for all to hear and I hope they are listening, not just watching. Stay safe, stay well and stay free..........
I'm ex military that's great advice you have give stay safe and enjoy your life !!! Your a very Beautiful Black Queen

You're a very wise Young lady!

Your voice is to calm and soothing... :)
Yaaas! As a VLOC (Van Lifer of Color....I just made that up). This is a must see video! Thank you and Preach!
Strong, Powerful, Spiritual....I'll stop there...I've researched vanlife for about a year....you've just convinced me ....did I say Smart....thank you...I'm in...Van life here I come.....thanks again...
This is such great advice! I am not a van lifer but I feel this is valuable information for current and future solo van lifers. I love that you travel with your dog. Stay blessed and safe. 😇
Good tips. My first cross-country road trip took me through Colorado, Oregon, Utah and Nevada. A bunch of craziness popped off in spots that I would not have expected.
Everything about this! Everything about you and how calm and graceful you are. I AM HERE FOR IIIT!!!!
Been looking for this type of content, to see a black woman out here doing this...I want to cry with joy!! Honestly! Thank you for sharing your story and for inspiring many...myself included! Love from Kenya 🇰🇪 East Africa. One day this will be a journey I will embark on!
First time saying this on the social media streets 😄
I am a 75 year old white woman, and I have watched hundreds of videos, and yours is the best I've seen thank you
You are one smart cookie! I sure appreciate you and your great attitude. I pray that more of us white gals start standing beside our black sisters. Every single one of us in this world has an effect on equality.
"Cleo is 100% in tune with her intuition" - dogs are the best! Excellent video - your tips apply in so many situations.
This is why I keep roadside assistance on my vehicles and keep extra water and chargers in my car.
You have much calm and peace.
The fact that you're a cop is really cool and giving preventative tips is gonna save a lot of lives.
You are such a beautiful brilliant union of feminine and masculine energy---the purest innocent essence of it. I'm curious how/why you decided to begin van life?? what was the spark that made you decide to do it? thank you!! Great video---India Ame'ye, Author, "You look Like Something Blooming"
“Another layer of safety that I must be aware of as a woman of color”… unfortunate, yet so true, Candyss! Thank you so much for this detailed video!🙏🏽💛✨
Thank you for this! Your perspective as a black woman vanlifer is invaluable.
"Now that I'm aware, I can make conscious decisions" that the best advice against fear! Thank you! Praying for your continuous, exciting, and insightful experience! You are a beautiful person inside and out!
Clearly, you are an intelligent, thoughtful and introspective person. Your tips are much appreciated. I truly enjoy your videos and I wish you safe and happy travels.
I love your channel. You are intelligent, you're a teacher, you're living in connectedness and harmony with the earth. I'm delighted to watch a woman of color doing the van life. Please stay safe.
Smart, tough & pretty.
Thank you so much for this video. You have become one of my favorite people on RUclips living this life. I love watching other van life videos but it is obvious as a woman of color we do have different experiences while traveling. The research almost becomes stressful at times but I appreciate your tips.
Also... can we get skin care videos? 😂😍
Off topic, but, well said 👏👏👏
Your advice is 💯 percent on point. As a fellow WOC I learned real quick while traveling around the US and abroad what does and doesn’t apply to me in certain situations. Every lesson has only made me stronger and more appreciative. Faith, meditation, and determination helped to move those mountains so that I could enjoy the summit 🏔 😊 🙏🏾
Yes other people's fear.If I listened to my mother I would've never have done anything worth anything.Rides at amusement parks, planes, traveling and all.So true.Great video.
Always know what you taking from people and what you leaving right where you heard it💯🌞💕
yess!! take what you need, leave what you don't
Excellent advice!! Even for someone who’s not in van life. Thank you for sharing your experience as a black woman also, it allows us to understand and see your perspective with things that would never occur to us. Your a lovely person and a strong woman. And I LOVE your dog.
This is so informative and eye opening. I'm very grateful for you taking the time and energy to discuss these real issues and topics that are underestimated and underexposed on this platform and in this lifestyle. Peace and blessings queen
Amennnnn. Thank you for the tips. Us black women gotta be in-tune with our gut feelings and on-top of our research. Your voice is so soothing, and what you shared made me feel less anxious about other people's fears, while still acknowledging my own true fears.
I'm from down south so I'm use to the flags and signs and hate from people and strange people too. Stay packing and know where you're going and as you do this more often you'll know where it's safe to stop and chill and where not to. As women no matter what ethnicity we have to be extremely vigilant.
You are awesome and your vibe is infectious. Thanks for posting this topic.
I love CLEO!!! I saw her in ur first video. I need me a CLEO🐾💖🐾 Great video, great tips.
Thank you for this!! So glad to hear a black woman covering this important topic!!
Thank You again for your insight...
I'm binge watching your videos and am settling in for the night...
You're speaking every thing that's on my mind...
Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us.
You are so wise! You should have so many more subscribers!
I don't know how I got this channel, but girl you are so calming and peaceful talking about a heavy subject. I enjoyed this.
Your honesty is refreshing and your perspective is practical, realistic and empowering.
Beautiful LADY Beautiful soul/spirit🌹✌🏾💕🙏🏽
I was searching for security tips, found your video, didnt realise i needed therapy. I need a mummy like you in my life.
Thank you for touching on fear. "Thank you fear now I'm aware".
I'm so happy that you touched base on the racial or diversified aspect of solo travel. This has been a focus of my fear to even start. Thanks beautiful Lady! 🥰
You make really good points about the psychology of fear and how to mitigate societal programming that impacts our independence. Rock on!
She is just beautiful soul with lots of willpower
I am not black and I still completely understand you. I am German, living in Texas with my profession is in small town very difficult. I learned to be "carry". We as women (any color) have to be more careful than man. Trust your guts.. and in case of bad towns, no place to feel safe drive to the next police station and ask if you can stay on their parking lot for the night
Definitely agree that you should write a greenbook and a book. We need this.
Thank you for speaking the truth and sharing how to travel safely. I am not a van traveler but have wondered how women who do travel alone stay safe. You have helped lots of women who are traveling solo. I pray for you all continuously.
Your spirit is so beautiful and calm. I really enjoy your videos. Blessings queen!!
Thank you for sharing and for your Nobel & honorable service as a police officer and in the military! Love your dog! Grew up with German Shepherds and they are the best dogs for protection & security! Safe travels and God bless you! 🙏🏾❤️💕
These are amazing tips for not only van life but ‘life’ period. Thank you Queen.
ur skin is absolutely ✨FLAWLESS✨
