Found your channel while i was in quarantine for the past 10 days and binged almost all of your content in 5 days. Especially the tour in the Himalayas, which i watched 3 times, picked me up. The result is: After a couple of days thinking and sleeping over it, i've decided that i should do more with my life. This didn't came over night of course, i thought a lot about it in the past years, but i never had something like a plan. Rather vague ideas. Now i have a real plan i already started to work on it: - Buying a 701 or a 690 - Customize it for long range ADV riding - Taking sevral guided offroad trainigs and do smaller tours - Learning as much as i can about this topic - selling my company and my house - Going to a journey around the world in 2023 with open end (if the covid situation has settled down) And when I come to Australia one day, which has been on my list for a long time, I will invite you and thank you personally. Because you gave the final impuls and i've learned so much in the past week because of your content. So, thank you. Honestly.
701 is a treasure! Bash plate to go with the beast, is a plastic one, like the one from a AXP racing. There are options from the other manufacturers. But all in all, it is quiet, slides nicely through stuff, and does not bend.
Hey Dave, so good u and nugget did this series I really enjoyed the down to earth feel of the videos. I'm very happy to see this particular episode as I was curious to see your take on the bike setup. Plz plz keep putting out top videos and I'll keep watching. Looking forward to more adventures from my backyard Australia..
Love this series Dave and the follow up. You have the most informative and comprehensive reviews I've found online. I had a deposit on a T7 which never arrived so I moved onto a 701LR which also never made it to the dealer here in the US. Landed on a used 701 Enduro and couldn't be happier with it, especially coming from a bloated GSA. It's refreshing to have lost nearly 300 lbs. Also, the Rade aux fuel tank is a great addition to the standard 701 as it maintains the narrowness of the bike and keeps the tank protected between the frame rails. Depending on conditions I can get about 250+ miles of range. The setup replaces the stock air filter housing which adds some intake noise (only on full throttle) but it makes getting to the valves and sparkplugs a lot easier and has a reusable, foam air filter as part of the kit. Also, I've knocked the sidestand magnet out of place a few times but once realigned, no issues. I carry the dongle as a backup. Thanks again and looking forward to what you have coming...cheers from the US!
Great addition to the series, it answered some questions I had. The entire Tropical Punch series is quite possibly the best adventure riding series on RUclips, and this is by far my favorite motorcycle channel. Can't wait for more.
Great review and I think your modifications are spot on and don’t compromise the benefits of a lightweight adventure bike. Vanasche has a side stand switch bypass dongle that might be a solution for you. They are a USA based firm and have some excellent products for the 701/690.
Before it got damaged, I relocated the T7 side stand switch up out of harms way behind the fairing to serve as a manual set anti theft immobilizer. Rather than bypassing or just deleting it altogether. You’re right, they’re just an invitation to trouble on the trail for sure.
Fabulous bike, I've liked them since way-back when they were still Swedish . Great video series, I'm going through it again for the third watch. Looking forward to the next uploads. BTW, I've seen many mullets over the years, but your mate is sporting the ultimate version ever.
Bought my 3rd 701 just the other day. sold my second for a 890adr but after just a couple of miles i realized that this was not at all as I wanted and I sold it and bought a 701e again.
Currently riding a DRZ which I really love, but I see myself going the 690/701 route in the future. In many ways I look at the 690/701 to be the modern version of the DRZ.
I’ve really enjoyed the whole series. Thanks. I just got 2021 model 690. Very similar to your 701. AXP and Vanasche both do thick plastic bash plates. No noise and very tough. They cover linkage and brake cylinder. A mate had same kick stand issue as you on a recent ride and we found a foil pie container and put that between stand and switch. That fixed it. So now I carry a pie foil in my tool bag. I also really like map mode 2, seems to be the perfect set up for off road. Cheers
When modified the 690/701 is the best alround adventure bike available. As has been mentioned there are dongles available to by pass the side stand cut out.cheers.
Dave thank you for taking the time to do this follow up. I loved the series particularly seeing you ride through the Kimberley. My home state but never been up there. The 701 LR looks like a winner for those wanting a light weight and capable travel bike, without the additional risk of fatigue setting in too early. I currently own the new KTM890 Adv R so am interested in your take on that bike. I cant say I'm happy with the additional weight over the 790r but it does a great job just the same. The lighter 701 LR with some mods certainly ticks a lot of boxes.
You could also just bridge the switch out. Take the two wires that go into the switch and solder them together. The switch will now be permanently made and no longer a problem 👌
Dave good vid, been a bit under the weather the only benefit being able to catch up with all the filming of the last few years. Quality work outstanding production you and Nugget what a double act. Excellent keep it up cant wait for the next one.
Thanks Dave Another great video Love the 701 but now the long rang tank for the Yamaha will be a tuff decision as I want to get two of the same bike. Stay safe thanks Cheers
Thanks Dave, well done on the series. I can’t think of a higher recommendation for a bike. So good the reviewer bought it. The only disappointments, there are no more episode and we didn’t get another instalment of the Nugget and Squid show. Keep up the good work.
Fantastic videos Dave, you convinced me to buy a 701 , the LR wasn't available here in Spain due to a recall for a fuel pipe friction problem. Rade garage have an alternative fuel tank. Looking forward to your Ktm video. Thanks , Biff Granada , Spain
Can't say enough good things about the Tropical Punch film(s). Fantastic in every way. Now, when this Covid thing ends how about a similar adventure in Canada? Would love to see you guys come here. Have a great Winter.
I’m converting my 701 and fuel range is a challenge. The factory LR tank should be available soon but it’s very expensive. Rade Garage has a tank that replaces the air box but I’ve heard mixed reports on it. Also I’d love to find tubeless wheels as pac heavy duty tubes is cumbersome.
I have ridden with a guy with Rade garage conversion and for what I want to do, particularly back in the top end and it's not enough. No interest in going tubeliss.
I had no idea the 21 version had so many upgrades, one thing you've got to give to KTM, they never stop innovating. I hope you'll get a chance to test the 2022 390 or 401 KTM offroad adv bikes, they look very promising.
I got a 2020 701. Not the LR. Thinking about improving the range by adding the LR-Tanks. I think there is an oem-option for installment. I also been thinking about a rally tower or at least a bikini-fairung like you did. What i did early on was lowering the gearing. Original ist 15:46 and i am currently running 14:50 which makes the bike super easy to wheelie and still go 160 km/h. I will change it to 15:50 to spare afew revs though. I love my 2020 LR !!! Funny even before I watched this we have many of the same mods. But to your point this bike does EVERYTHING I ask if it, has the range I need and it doesn’t weigh 650 lbs.
good to know my KTM 690R gas cap key turn effort is experienced by others. I thought I may need a new fill cap. I was going to by a KTM replacement, but I guess I'll have to do aftermarket.
@@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV I have a question for you if I may. I'm ready to sell my 690R and get the Husq 901 for the sole reason that my whole groin area gets put to sleep after only about 30 miles of street riding sitting down. I literally can't tell who I'm holding on to when I pee. Funny, I know. But man, that can't be good for you. I put a seat concept replacement on it, but it isn't much better. It's already too tall so padding isn't a welcome idea. Any suggestions? I'm thinking about lowering it just so I can have some padding.
@@howlinhog that's strange because I've got a Seat Concept seat on my 690 and it works a treat. Maybe you have bigger balls than me :). There are other seat providers out there and other solutions. I'd try hard to work through it.
Love your videos mate. They’re always great quality. I’m coming off a bigger KTM ADV, which I’ve loved for many years. You’ve got my attention with the Husky 701 set up. What’s your thoughts on the servicing and maintenance intervals. Is that an issue? And should I be concerned purchasing a bike with say 40,000 kms on it? TIA. Keep the content coming 👍🏻👍🏻
Another fantastic vid,.. The test through real adventure with mods to fit the type of riding, Husky nail it somehow with the number 701..now Is there are side panniers for WR450F..?!
Hey Dave, loving all the great 701 info both here and elsewhere - excellent work! I note air filter change on the LR is a bit of a drama, do you know if converting standard 701 to long range tank similarly makes the air filter harder to access? Apologies if you've covered this already. Cheers, Tim M.
Thanks for the wrap up. great series! I've had a look at the 701 and thought the rear subframe a bit light? your thoughts on frame longevity carrying gear? (I note there is some decent pannier framing on yours) As for the sidestand switch, that problem is not unique to the Husky
I have a similar sub frame on my 690. Sometimes I carry a good deal of gear and I ride pretty quickly particularly in the tough stuff. I like the triangulation these types of pannier racks provide and ostensibly assist the subframe in taking load.
Glad to see you are on a 701. I'm thinking of switching from my Africa Twin to a 690 or 701. I am wondering if you did the tank bolt upgrade along with the luggage rack, of if you found the bolt upgrade (Rally Raid, or Perun) is not needed with the luggage rack.
Just found your videos...(takes me a bit ..haha explains a lot ) but as a solo female, I'm heading to AU, in late October to stay for a year or 2 to Ride all over AU...hoping to meet up and pick yalls brains and any advice...after which I hope to continue on a RTW tour...LOVE your videos, and reviews...I'm thinking about the BMW 310gs, for comfort, but I do like the Honda crf300rally, but I don't want to copy Noraly, (itchy boots) but I'm liking Huskys....big time too.. I want light weight agile,,,,I wish turning my HD 1200 Custom into a RTW scrambler was a great option.. but again, I want light weight... thx Cheers...
After your great video I went and brought a 701 enduro have done most of the mods you mentioned, still sitting on the fence regarding outback crashbars not sure how effective they would be and also the extra weight, have considered crashbars for your bike
As always, excellent work, thanks for sharing. About motorcycles, I would like to know if this type of motorcycle has the maintenance of an open engine for replacement of components after several hours of use? Thanks.
Thank you Dave for this amazing series and the amount of work you put it in. Quick one for you since i am buying one this year : 701 enduro 2021 or 690 enduro 2021? Cheers
Does the Rade garage 5 L tank fit to the 701? Excellent summary, one minor question re filming. Why bother with the filming from a side angle? I am seeing it more and more and to me, it just doesn’t add anything to the production. There is nothing wrong with front on filming as I like to see a presenter looking at me, the viewer.
Now that you have both a 690 and the 701 and have ridden them long range on and off road, what can you say about their differences and strengths of one over the other. I’ve had two 2016 690’s and put over 10,000 miles on each without issue on either. I just don’t think there’s enough of a difference between them to change to a 701. That said, I am seriously considering getting a T7 to continue my RTW when Covid restrictions are done. I’m just not intrigued enough with a 790 or 890 to go with one of them.
Please let us know which way you go re side stand switch / sensor. I’ve seen a few divergent suggestions in the comment section, but I would like to know your reasoning behind your decision.
Dave, the side stand switch, I'm assuming it's just and open/close circuit switch and could be easily bypassed with some rewiring or is it more complex ECU integration?
Do you still have your KTM 690 Rally Raid set up. If so what ks on the clock? It would be good to hear a review about the bike since you have had it so long.
It's up around 50,000 ks. Still going strong and I still ride it regularly. Yeah it's a real tribute to Rally Raid Products. All the gear on the bike hasn't failed. It's just been brilliant and continues to work solidly. It's still my favourite bike for adventure, because everything works.
Posh dongles aside, is there any reason you can't just cut and join the two wires going to the sidestand switch like you would with any other bike? If you join the wires via bullet connectors you could leave the switch in place, also with connectors, then if you want to reconnect the sidestand switch it's just a case of plugging it back in
Yes Rob this is a round the world bike with sight modification and like all bikes riders knowing the solutions to common faults. I still have the T7. I haven't ridden it in months due to lock down and I can't get to it. I'm very fortunate to have both the T7 and the 701. Two outstanding mid size bikes for different reasons.
It varied quite a lot depending on heavy I was on the throttle and the type of fuel. My record was 400 ks that included an 8 litre fuel bladder. I rode at 80 ks all the way. Boring as bat shit. If I hammered it on Opal fuel, say 130 to 140 plus, low 300s plus the 8litres. Yes you heard correct, HUGE difference.
Yes it reduced his seat height a reasaonble amount. Look at the shot when the bikes were in the bac of the truck. A usefulmodification for vertically challenged.

Yes looking forward to the 890 ride. And looking forward to getting longer range on my bike.
The side stand problem can be solved by a dongle from Vanasche, there is one for the 2020 and a new one coming soon for the 2021 EU model.
You could also just bridge the switch out. Take the two wires that go into the switch and solder them together. The switch will now be permanently made and no longer a problem 👌
Not with these, the computer needs a signal from a proximity sensor.
Nope, for the Yammy T700 that's true but not for these.

Prevention is better than dongle cure = secure the magnet, Dave🕊
Hey Dave. Great video loving them! Just about to get my own 701. Regarding the kickstand problem you can buy a bypass online to fix that.

YOu may know I have both a T700 and 701. For tough dirt, the 701 every time. The t700 is a comfortable mile muncher.
My solution to side stand switches is to bypass them.
It is usually just a matter of joint two wires together & heatshrinking them.
You can't don that with a husky or KTM. You need a dongle or magnet, of some other way. Yes your solution works on say a T700 but not these bikes.

As for the sidestand switch, that problem is not unique to the Husky
I have a similar sub frame on my 690. Sometimes I carry a good deal of gear and I ride pretty quickly particularly in the tough stuff. I like the triangulation these types of pannier racks provide and ostensibly assist the subframe in taking load.
Glad to see you are on a 701. I'm thinking of switching from my Africa Twin to a 690 or 701. I am wondering if you did the tank bolt upgrade along with the luggage rack, of if you found the bolt upgrade (Rally Raid, or Perun) is not needed with the luggage rack.
Did neither
Good luck. So many decisions to make. Yep I agree the Honda has been done to death by Noraly.
Would love to hear your thoughts on the new AJP PR7 since update. thanks again for the great content !
Hi Toby, I've never really been a fan of the AJP.
After your great video I went and brought a 701 enduro have done most of the mods you mentioned, still sitting on the fence regarding outback crashbars not sure how effective they would be and also the extra weight, have considered crashbars for your bike
Not interested in crash bars for the 701. If I go down it will only be cosmetic things that get hurt.
Dave, lmao nugget is speechless 3:00 mark, he's never speechless......
I surprised him
I want to do this so badly.
A great ride.
1:08 looks like a fort on top of the hill.... like the ones created by the Marathas during the reign of SHIVAJI
Yes Avinash, amazing geography. Huge landscape.
As always, excellent work, thanks for sharing. About motorcycles, I would like to know if this type of motorcycle has the maintenance of an open engine for replacement of components after several hours of use? Thanks.
10,000 k service interval
Thank you Dave for this amazing series and the amount of work you put it in.
Quick one for you since i am buying one this year : 701 enduro 2021 or 690 enduro 2021?
Cheers
Don't know the differences, maybe none. I don't know.
Hope it is ok to share this series on my page.
David, you have inspired me.
yep
8:10 shark have butter hand hahahah
yes
Does the Rade garage 5 L tank fit to the 701? Excellent summary, one minor question re filming. Why bother with the filming from a side angle? I am seeing it more and more and to me, it just doesn’t add anything to the production. There is nothing wrong with front on filming as I like to see a presenter looking at me, the viewer.
Not sure of Rade and fitment of 701, but I would assume so. Shot variation for your other disappointment. :)
I’ve seen all the adventures..
Excellent
Now that you have both a 690 and the 701 and have ridden them long range on and off road, what can you say about their differences and strengths of one over the other. I’ve had two 2016 690’s and put over 10,000 miles on each without issue on either. I just don’t think there’s enough of a difference between them to change to a 701. That said, I am seriously considering getting a T7 to continue my RTW when Covid restrictions are done. I’m just not intrigued enough with a 790 or 890 to go with one of them.
There are significant improvements between the 690 and 701. That said, my 690 is a highly capable bike and built for purpose.
Please let us know which way you go re side stand switch / sensor.
I’ve seen a few divergent suggestions in the comment section, but I would like to know your reasoning behind your decision.
Stand by on that one.
Hallo! Dose this fuel dongel work on my 701- 2022. I live in Norway. Best regards Jarle
Don't know.
Dave, the side stand switch, I'm assuming it's just and open/close circuit switch and could be easily bypassed with some rewiring or is it more complex ECU integration?
No it requires a dongle
Do you still have your KTM 690 Rally Raid set up. If so what ks on the clock? It would be good to hear a review about the bike since you have had it so long.
It's up around 50,000 ks. Still going strong and I still ride it regularly. Yeah it's a real tribute to Rally Raid Products. All the gear on the bike hasn't failed. It's just been brilliant and continues to work solidly. It's still my favourite bike for adventure, because everything works.
@@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV Thanks for your comments. Much appreciated.
Is this your main bike you purchased for you that will do it all?
I own this bike. It's great for the tough stuff.
How about a piece of closed cell foam between motor & bash plate?
Maybe too soft and low melting point.
Tusk and P3 Carbon make bash plate foam (Black Porous open cell foam) specifically to go between plate & engine to keep mud out and dampen noise.
I need to know if you had one choice to have the most perfect bike for your type of riding what would you take?
Right now? Norden 901 with 270mm suspension.
Posh dongles aside, is there any reason you can't just cut and join the two wires going to the sidestand switch like you would with any other bike?
If you join the wires via bullet connectors you could leave the switch in place, also with connectors, then if you want to reconnect the sidestand switch it's just a case of plugging it back in
Ah No. Nye. A big no. No. Certainly on a T700 but not a Husky or KTM.
Hi Dave. Great review. Is it a RTW bike?...do u still have the T7?
Yes Rob this is a round the world bike with sight modification and like all bikes riders knowing the solutions to common faults. I still have the T7. I haven't ridden it in months due to lock down and I can't get to it. I'm very fortunate to have both the T7 and the 701. Two outstanding mid size bikes for different reasons.
@@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV thanks Dave. Keep up the good work mate👍
👍👍👍👍👍😊😊
Ta
Hey Dave. What was the fuel range on your stock fuel tanks
Hey Dave what hand guards did you put on yours? Trying to get ones similar for mine. Thanks Paul
They are Husky oem, but look very similar to Bark Busters.
@@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV thanks mate
How does the 701 not have the same motor issues as the old 690?
I can only speak from my experience. I eventually purchased this 2021 model and I haven't had any problems with it yet.
Can you tell wich of the motorcycles vibrates less, Honda CRF300L or Husqvarna 701 ?
The 701 is smooth as silk now. The 300 is OK.
@@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV Thank you.
Where do you buy the flip mirrors from
Flip mirrors a a Husqvarna hard part. have a look in their catalogue.
We all know the only reason nugget got a bike was bc of those shorts.. ;)
Yep, definitely!
What happen with your Tenere 700?
I still have it. Due to covid lockdown I haven't been able to get to it in months, but that's about to change.
@@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV Thank you very much for your answer. Your documentaries are always excellent and very interesting. Thank you
Hi from New Zealand I'm really curious about how low the seat height is on nuggets bike and if it made much difference to the stock standard
Yes it reduced his seat height a reasaonble amount. Look at the shot when the bikes were in the bac of the truck. A usefulmodification for vertically challenged.
@@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV how tall is nugget
