    I like the bare ground idea, but with about 200 lbs of cover crop wheat per acre spread over the top. (Just keep it legal)

      Thanks for watching and commenting! It sure is a pretty patch. We planted 3 50lb bags of sunflowers on 6 acres. So right at 25lbs per acre, fertilized if heavily and it really did well! Thanks for the support

    The sunflowers are beautiful. You did not say what kind of sunflower seed you planted, date. I am thinking of doing that. Not sure when to try. I bought a bag of sunflower seeds being sold as bird feed at Walmart. Will they grow?

      Terry thanks for watching and commenting, I really appreciate. They really are a sight to see! Great questions, the field was planted may 10th, and they are at full flower around mid July. black oil sunflower seeds is what we planted….I can’t say for sure on the ones you bought but a simple germ test would let you know if the seed is viable. I’ve got a video called” is your seed bad? How to find out” on my channel that you can watch and learn how to see if the seed you bought will grow. I highly suspect they will grow, because on the bag we used it had a picture of 2 birds and said from field to feeder. Hope this helps!

    I live in Mississippi, I have been told that May is when you should plant the sunflowers. Is this correct in order to have them by September?

    • @DIYfoodplotpro
      @DIYfoodplotpro  Год назад +1

      Tommy thanks for watching and commenting! Yes sir, may planted sunflowers will be ready by September to hunt over, we planted these may 10th, but our target date was may 15th. We had some rain coming in so we decided to get them in the ground before the rain.

    You could have added sun hemp or Cowpeas to keep the weeds down and add nitrogen to the sunflowers, making them grow faster. I prefer to drill in Sunflowers.

    • @DIYfoodplotpro
      @DIYfoodplotpro  Год назад

      Thanks for watching and commenting, the farmer said he wanted the grass and weeds for more food for the doves. He did add nitrogen, he put 100 lbs of nitrogen per acre

    • @carrollsanders9376
      @carrollsanders9376 Год назад +2

      @@DIYfoodplotpro 100 LBS of Nitrogen per acre isn't much on Sunflowers, Sun Hemp alone adds 200 pounds to the Acre of Nitrogen. When planted at 20 pounds too the acre, yes the weeds and grass do help to attract doves if you don't have invasive species of grass.

      @@carrollsanders9376 I don’t claim to be a dove expert but this man had raised successful dove fields for over 40 years, and he has likely the best field in our area. From what I saw he has another super successful dove field this year. This field gets rotated with ag crops, so one year of seeds isn’t a big deal to them, he will simply rotate next year and Likley put corn where the sunflowers are this year

      @@DIYfoodplotpro I agree it looks like a good Field, plenty of cover for the Doves but just wanted the viewers to know there was an alternative to putting so much Nitrogen Fertilizer on the Field as Nitrogen is expensive now.

    How in the world does he keep the deer from eating his sunflowers up? They always destroy mine

    • @DIYfoodplotpro
      @DIYfoodplotpro  Год назад

      Thanks for watching and commenting! He purposely puts the sunflowers in a area where the deer density is low, plus that is a 6 acre field we planted. If I would put these on my high density deer farms they would have to be fenced. Thanks
