Yeah, I can tell you what was exciting was "In Through the Out Door" and "Fool in the Rain" and then feeling cheated by the tragic death of John Bonham. What I liked best were "London Calling" and Van Halen II. But my first concert was Rush on Moving Pictures.... still my best concert experience.
I think this was during recordings for Moving pictures so their last album would have been Permanent Waves circa 1978, so this is probably late 79 or 80 so yes, likely the Wall( Nov. 79)
"It's just a matter of facility, really. I mean I have a facility with words that I don't have with notes, and they have it with notes." Neil is not only one of the greatest drummers of all time, but an egregiously underrated lyricist and intellect.
Neil Peart has always had an intellectual mind and it was because he was an active reader. He said that when he would be touring, there was alot of dead time so he used that time to read. . Notice his high vocabulary.
@@wickedvideowatcher Exactly! He knew what he wanted to say and said it with confidence. His drumming was polished, his lyrics were polished and it reflected in his speech.
In the mid 80s I wanted to get a perm to have that cool rock look like Alex's hair. But instead it ended up looking like Bob Ross and I was swearing all the way home
This is probably my favorite interview with these guys ever. To me, Rush was at their technical peak about this time. You can see the lines of experience and hard work on their faces here, before anything cosmetic was done. This was at the time they had nothing more to prove, while critics still disliked them very much. They are so polite, well-versed and human, when they could have been like so many other supergroups during this time frame; arrogant. I miss this band more than I thought I ever would. RIP Neil...
some bands may be going back to basics, that would be the bands that can't play anything other than basics - I effin love it. Modern "music" in a nutshell too.

Hey, Mr. Lee, why don't you & Lex write more lyrics? Geddy Lee says in so many words, "Alex & I don't really have to worry about that anymore, now do we? We've got this guy over here..."
I kinda thought that more with Alex in the Counterparts tour in 1994. Which funny enough that tour was going on during production of you know what film
Alex be like "My perm (anent wave) speaks for me dude.." Lets see, Alex giggled a bit, said he likes to play live, alot. That he saw yes during the recording of COS album, then finally in the last 30 seconds he perks up with the Alex we all know and adore, joking around with a mask, and being "green with envy" lol. and hmmmm... not much else. Baked to the extreme!
Legend has it, Geddy's glasses were melted down to become all the windows in a downtown Toronto condominium. Those are some massive glasses.
They're eating his face lol
He see's Red and it hurts his head..
Legend also has it that the strings of his bass are made from his hair
Geddy even said in an interview of him watching himself doing an interview In 1981, he said “look at those glasses, eating my face” 😂
Glassive Masses!😆
"New Pink Floyd album" - must've been The Wall. Man, as a young fan i can't imagine how incredible it'd be to live in a time when The Wall was new.
A Banana 2 it couldn’t have been Animals. Animals was already out when this interview was filmed.
@@giovanniciniello1924 yeah i caught that already i was thinking of farewell to kings

Neil's a genius
The only inaccurate word you chose in your comment is "underrated."
I love how there are no egos. So humble and refreshing
Neil is so polite and respectful
Neil was dealing with two fuxked up stoners. He knew he had to take the lead :
Alex is stoned out of his mind....Never has he been so quiet.
Yes
They ALL look stoned!
fragerance of afghanastan
Stoned hell...HE'S BAKED!
So is Geddy.. out of his mind, as well. These dudes are fuxked up
Neil looks like he hasn't eaten anything in weeks.
lots and lots of blow around this era from what i heard and read
@@mpc3po fuck you Rush NEVER touched coke!! They were a band that simply liked to tour and work and there fans!!
CORNDOG Extreme Alex used to do coke...
@@geddyleessoup5086 I remember him saying "It was a great drug if you liked feeling your heartbeat through your mattress at 8:00 in the morning"
I think they had some coke for sure
Went and saw YES live and then came back and didn't want to finish recording our record; love it!
that would have been the YES solo or relayer tour. Yes were totally on fire back then. I can sympathize w. Lerxt
That was a delight to watch , fortunately I got to see them three times in 1979
Neil Peart has always had an intellectual mind and it was because he was an active reader. He said that when he would be touring, there was alot of dead time so he used that time to read. . Notice his high vocabulary.
Dude was brilliant. Really smart guy as they all were. Alex was the cut up that kind of kept things light.
I read from one source that Geddy Lee said Neil was like a walking dictionary.
And the lack of "um" and "uh" in his speaking.
@@wickedvideowatcher Exactly! He knew what he wanted to say and said it with confidence. His drumming was polished, his lyrics were polished and it reflected in his speech.

😉
"Ah we don't talk so good".... enter Alex " ah talk for yourself " . Funny stuff.
In the mid 80s I wanted to get a perm to have that cool rock look like Alex's hair. But instead it ended up looking like Bob Ross and I was swearing all the way home
That's not too bad. Mine looked like Howard Stern at first.
Wait, why are you mad about bob ross hair?
This interview is so awesome. These guys are legends how cool to see them young and listening to their thoughts at the time.
Neil looks like he's been awake for 4 days here...

Alex is awful quiet. Unusual for him. That's how I got when I was HIIIIIIIIIIIIIGH!!!!!!
I think he is :P
Alex is in another galaxy at that point.
I think he's always high
They all sound pretty high. But it's obvious Alex can't handle his shit.
In the end it falls apart like an old Kiss interview. lol
Me Too
Neil's FM shirt is epic
FM opened for Rush in Denver in 81, and they looked too much like Rush.
How adorable are they 😂❤️
Great interview. Alex with the ramen hair. Thanks for this.
i had such a thing for neil..man.. so gorgeous in all the right ways
My favorite part is the end where it devolves into chaos.
Just knew Neil has a strong jawline
Neil "turned over and died" I love it 😂
I don't undertand why he says that, please explain me 😅
What was funny was both Neil and Ged said it at the same time.
@Averell Peert; Rush broke away from the blues based rock and simple lyrics following Neil's arrival.
Funny, Geddy states that " they are not pioneers" little did he know the people and great musicians they would influence today.
6:34 "Turned over and died" haha
RLM! TBH, I always felt RLM was sort of the Rush of RUclips. Underrated and offbeat.
What does it mean? Some one please tell me 😂
Neil and Alex look better now in their 60's. I would have loved to hear Sir Gaiwan.
Neil always seemed wise beyond his years.
Rest in Peace Neil. Thank you for the inspiration, and all the great drum licks!
I saw them 3 times around this time. All in England/ Wales. Twice at Manchester Apollo and once at Deeside Ice Rink.
And such beautiful hair!!!!!
Alex is looking at geddy like he has three god damn heads
Alex: Blah....
?
@@santinovp9471 Watch Alex's Rock & Roll Hall of Fame acceptance speech 😂
Harry Dunne didn't have much to say.

Nah thats wrong 😂
hahaha I am glad I am a big enough Rush fan to know what Neil meant when he said "turned over and died" :P
Now I really want to know what he meant.
i'm new-ish to rush, me too
not new anymore but what does it mean
not remotely new now, what does it mean
turnleftaticeland Youre a seasoned Rush boi now
Ahhh back then when Geddy used to look like my grandma.
I think Geddy's female doppelganger cashed me out in the supermarket not long ago 😆
Absolutely love this interview…rest easy, Neil. 🙏🏻♥️
Neil looks entirely different!!! Funny to see Geddy smoke. He quit in 1982 and hates the fact that he smoked at one time. He had amazing hair!
Lifeson is on another dimension bro is baked af😭
Best interview ever!
Such legends! The kings of rock.
The kings of your mother you sound like a moronic person i can see why neil hated and stayed away from the fans
I was about as high as Alex once.
Wait, no I wasn't. I think I was thinking of someone else.
I got a contact high from just watching!
Yes fans!!!!
yeah!!
Don't mind me I'm just heckling.
You know what they say about men with big feet...big synthesizer sounds.
These musical geniuses were so modest!
11:56 "were not pioneers by any stretch."
Lifeson's bombed
what album are they talking about?
Black Lake Gaming Permanent Waves
A radio cassette in Neil's background...wow! time has passed me by😁
I like Neil's shirt , and some of the British prog bands they spoke about . Ah the good old days !
"We don't think that it is." - best moment! :D
Lol Geddy looks like my mum's photos from the 1970s
Aww look at them ! : ) I'm all smiles.
Alex looks like Meriadoc (Merry) Brandybuck.
1980 onwards they got really good at what they do

He was trippin' several dimensions above this one at that time.

what song is geddy talking about at 2:29, Sir Gawan? That didn't make the album because it was "very renaissance."
Geddy sounds exactly as he looks like
A great band that not only got along well, but laughed together. 5:35
7:53 The correct response to this question was "have you heard me play the drums?".
Geddy could put his hair in a bun and become a public school principal.

Freakin' Nerds...
No wonder I love them!
Neil looked weird without his moustache
Please can someone explain me what the "turned over and died" thing is about, I am a Rush beginner and I am confused
Neil basically put a halt to Geddy and Alex's blues-rock direction.
They were working on permanent waves.
The band were not taking care of themselves at the time of this interview, rock star lifestyle
The good thing is they were young - around their late 20’s. So they could withstand the grueling schedule
Lifeson's hair looks like delicious ramen noodles
I think Neil is actually a robot...listen to that voice.....Gedster is for real......and Alex is most definitely wasted....
Attention All Planets Of The Solar Federation..
We have assumed control...
anybody know what year this is?
Late '79. During the Permanent Waves sessions. The album came out Jan 1980.
Alex talks so much. Sheesh!
Was there a cooler Rock and Roll band ever? I think not.
Permanent Waves - Great Album that really kicked off their more commercial pieces...
Awesome interview!
Is Neil wearing the band FM tshirt?
At 10:52 when Neil says "new Pink Floyd Album", that must have been "The Wall" right? Or could this interview be as early as around "Animals"?
The Wall for sure. This interview was around the exact sane time “ The Wall” came out around late 1979 early 1980ish.
