I took a lesson with Dan many many years ago when he was coaching in PA, what a great day, super informative, and a fun day of learning. I still refer to his notes from that day.

You can tell Dan and Steve have worked together for some time as both of them told my wife the same thing. Slow down on your 2nd shot and get connected. You are the only one with ammo and the clays do not shoot back. If you get a chance to be a part of a clinic with them I highly recommend. They are not kidding about the tough love. They called us out over and over and made us shot it over and over till we got it. They laid down a great foundation for us to build from.

I would like to have heard their thoughts on the two different methods and whether one should either a) stick with just one forever, 2) switch if you are in a situation that allows it (such as age, returning from the sport after quite a few years, etc.), and 3) use both. Dan does come to teach a local club here in MN once to twice per year and I’d like to hear his thoughts on it. Coming back into the game after being away for almost 20 years (kids, medical, etc.), I want to get locked in with a good coach setup if possible.

This is the best clay shooting sportsman channel by all means.. I have been a religious subscriber since couple months after you started publishing. I watched this episode yesterday and I watched it again Saturday morning sipping my morning coffee on the big screen TV in the living room.. This is like watchin a TLC caliber episode on cable TV. My question is I would like to see from a shooter POV perspective what portion of the barrel is seen (I know it shouldn't be in the focus plane) as the shooter is tracing the clay.. To simplify the experiment, maybe a gun is first established that it shoots 50-50 to the poa vs poi, then carry out the experiment with a small camera attached to the eye glasses frame to reveal the shooter technique. For instance I like to see a projected portion of my barrel for a 50 50 gun and i trace the shadow of the tip of the barrel to be aligned with the bottom edge of the clay. This sighting pictures converts the gun to almost a 70-30 shot placement and allows me to predict the clay flight so I can focus on the clay flight pattern and predict the break point to pull the trigger.. It would be nice to see what other shooters techniques are out there and what is the different coaches opinion about it. Thank you.
This would be very interesting. Thank you for being such a long-time subscriber. It is what really keeps me going at this point. The use of a camera to replicate what the human eyes will be seeing is likely the most difficult part. It has been said man times that a 35mm lense replicates the human eye the best. The aperture of the camera can likely adjust for the focus making the barrel hazy while focusing on the target. Now here it gets insane because the camera can't me mounted to the firearm since that shows the guns sight alignment rather than the shooters eye in line with the target while the barrel pulls away creating different axis. Best way to replicate that is both a camera over the dominate eye while using a laser pointer mounted to the firearm to show the relationship. 🤔
We have looked into it but those cameras work from a position perspective but not the visual representation of the human eye if that makes sense. They are made to capture wide angel experiences so its pleasant for the viewer to see more than what your eyes would. This gets away from how much of the barrel is still visible even when not focusing on it. They also don't allow you to control aperture which would make just the clay in focus and blur out the barrel like it truelly would be since out pupil works the same way as a camera lense with its aperture. Still useful but not to the degree you are requesting.
I've come to find that a little honesty is what we all need when it comes to our current abilities and what it's going to take to get to whatever level we are trying to get to.
To get more people involved on a truly BIG scale the NSCA needs to develop a handicap system like golf. That way I can have a competitive game against anyone of differing skill levels and give or receive birds -get a net score and have a fair competition. Until them it will remain a esoteric niche sport.
Interesting concept, sounds like something that would only be implemented at the local tournament level? Couldn't really see its use in a state or national tournament but interest in your thought on it. Bet you could see League tournaments do this as well but they would be non-registered tournaments.

@@claylabusa I checked on the topic and they sell glasses mounted cameras. Not the best resolution but definitely good for the demonstration
