I’ve been wanting to make a video for ages where I put a more affordable mountain bike to the test. I spend a lot of time riding and working with very expensive bikes and parts, so it’s exciting to try a bike from the other end of the spectrum - an affordable complete hardtail MTB. Dirt jumps, downhill, drop and tricks, all on one bike. This hardtail is special to me as I designed the San Quentin frame with Marin Bikes, and it’s rad. So I found out how far you can push a cheaper complete mountain bike..
Your low budget bike is higher than my high budget 😂
*EDIT*
Thanks to my grandparents inheritance I did manage to purchase a “CUBE ANALOG Hardtail” 2021 version in Majority black with blue writing
AND it’s the best bike I’ve ever ridden just perfect! Cost £700 from an independent store which is less than RRP I think and I believe you defo don’t need to spend anymore than that whatsoever!! Unless your competing professionally there really isn’t that much difference in quality over 6 700 price range just like guitars which I love too!
🚲 🎸❤️

The way the biking community talks about bikes and the ludicrous over price of them it’s just crazy. For most people £700 is a LOT! Simply no need for the prices of most bikes, a big rip off.
Mine costs like $250
@@dadmadforgot4050 " Simply no need for the prices of most bikes, a big rip off."
We both know that isn't true
@@jensaugust743 You can create a perfectly great bike for for not much money (Calibre Bossnut). The expensive of a bike is down to a lot of factors that are not directly related to the bike itself - or how 'good' it is. Like all hobbies most people get into a mindset that that they need the latest and the best to enjoy the hobby and it's simply not true. Same deal with guitars. People get obsessed and nerdy and start to justify the expensive to themselves because get they get drawn into that mindset. The manufactures just feed into it and then feed off it = inflated prices. Capitalism I suppose. And im not saying it's necessarily a 'bad' thing. just an observation. : )
*I needed to replace my old bike (it was 22 years old). I absolutely love the **Latest.Bike** . It rides great, I love the color, and it’s a good bike for the money!*
Been waiting ages to see a pro riding a bike that most people will think is affordable for them, at a park that they could ride in!

Matt can shred on any bike!
Sam Pilgrim does it on free/throwaway bikes if I haven't already seen it
@@lbg9778 I was about to comment this haha
Luke Bg true, but those bikes are one and done and unrideable after the session. All it takes is one hard case or nose bomb on the front end and then it’s a cracked frame or blown out fork.
I would like to see a resonable budget upgrade series on this bike. Like a cheap dropper, some decent tires, maybe a second hand fork.
I’ve done 4 builds like that, if you wanna see a few. DM me on Instagram. Link should be on my channel
I built up a marin 1 with a fox 36, shimano xt full build, atlas stem and carbon bars etc and it was amazing. I ended up throwing a rockshox recon RL instead of the fox 36 before I sold it. It was still a amazing bike with that fork. sold it to my friend and from time to time I'll ask him to ride it when we go out on rides lol
That fork is actually pretty nice I would say it is on par with rockshox select +
Great idea right here

I love how theres still this little yellow Sticker on the fork that probably says:"No Freeride, Dirtjump or any hard riding"

They almost had me. Thanks to this video, I decided to keep my bike.
Oh I had that kind of sticker on my old hardtail bike... Well I have done some "hard riding" and surprisingly the fork survived freaking 3years! And it was a f*cking RST cheap coil suspension fork 😂
@@louisfunke7670 rst ain't that bad, the damping is just very basic. i like my cheap suntour fork, but the damping isn't great. also could do with some ramp up but yeah, cheap ain't bad.

I bought the San Quentin 1 last year for some beginner-level trail-ridings, and I am happy with it. However, seeing a pro taking the bike to the limit makes me feel really good about it. :)
Thanks for the vid Matt! I'm a massive advocate of building and upgrading round a frame. I've still got a Marin B17 triple butted hardtail from 2009 that is still my main bike, and the only thing left on it - that is from the original bike - is the frame, everything else has been upgraded or replaced.
The frame is gorgeous, tough as nails and absolutely bombproof (and I'm NOT a gentle rider, which is why I went for a triple butted frame) and an dream to ride even 11 years later.
Hey Matt, great idea for a video. I wish there was way more of this. There's just so many of us that don't have the funds to go real big.
What about a stock trail bike? Progress from that hardtail to a full on enduro or dh but using all the #1 builds instead of custom #3's.
My bike is a 500$ xc bike, I was thinking if I should spend more cash and build an all-mountain/trail bike instead of xc but since I ride 50% on pavement and 50% on trails, an xc bike is more suitable for me lol
I have have quite a few different bike, but by far my favourite was my Whyte 801, had 2 of them because my first one was stolen. £800 and still choose that quite often over my full suspension and carbon bikes. Just so much fun to throw around.
I’ve never seen somebody more stoked just to be on a bike, I instantly subscribed! Nice one mate.
I actually just bought a Marin San Quentin 1 myself. I’m so excited to try it. I’m upgrading from a cheap Mongoose exhibit and the San Quentin frame already looks so much more rugged and sturdy than what I currently have. I’m excited about this bike’s capability at this price point.
me too.im buy SQ2 and now im change the frame to the SQ3(because my sq2 frame is big then me)
my upgrade is hope e3 brake,shimano cassette,renthal handlebar,spank rasta stem,yoshimura pedal,fabric rasta saddle,da'bomb ufo freehub....next maybe rim....Marin SanQuentin is SICK.send it to the skyyyyy

Well pleased I dropped by. I was looking for a cheap hardtail up to a grand. I've looked at Boardman, Rockrider and a few others but definitely will be taking a closer look at this. I'm now 45 and had my first Marin when I was at school. (Bobcat Trail)

Love it. I picked up a 12 month old second hand hardtail with an rrp of £1200 for £650. If you keep an eye out some people buy them and never really use them, then sell them on when they've been sitting around in the garage.
Wanted the San Quentin so bad, love the color of the SQ1 but it doesn't come with thru axle so probably go for SQ2 and repaint it 👌
The standard bikes i rent out are 599,- msrp new.
With that you get decent shimano deore groupset and a working front fork with lockout on the bars.
Pretty much all you need to have loads of fun. They weigh in 12-13 kg's with 29 inch wheels.
So that is pretty light and nifty too.
Yes i love the look of the 1 by drivetrains. But not only are they expensive to buy. They are with very steep priced rear casettes very expensive too ride.
Meanwhile I have a Speciaized Hardrock 2015 with 26” wheels and a frame that is one size too small for me (thank you salesperson who knew as much as I did at the time).
Bad time to buy a new bike though because everyone and their mother is taking up mtb during lock down
I'm a Marin fanatic (Quake, Mount vision XTR Pro 1998 FRS, mount vision 5.9, Mount vision Carbon, Attack trail 2002, Wolf Ridge 2008, Pine mountain 1999, Nail Trail and Hawk Hill all in my stable.) and they are such an overlooked brand. Their kit level matches the frame perfectly and they are reliable as hell. Had ne fear watching him do this on a new born hardtail.

@@bbmtb710 Not as good geometry though, San Quentin is much longer for stabilty and a 5mm shorter chainstay. Yes the SQ1 doesn't come with dropper or the better Deore 10sp drivetrain but I think geom just does the job well. I just realized both are quick release rear so doesn't matter much.

Identical frames? Hardly when Marin cheap out and give the 1 a qr rear and a boost for the 2 and 3
But £725 for a bike with coil forks, a QR rear and crappy non tubeless tyres is unacceptable.
In a matter of a few days you have become my absolute hero...OK, there is Doctor Who (hihi), but "bike-wise" it is you! I have just bought the San Quentin 1. It is being prepared at the bike shop and I will pick it up tomorrow. Have been looking at this bike online for about six weeks now. I had a look at it before the virus prevented me to go to the shop. It looks brilliant and this vid showed that it will be more than enough for my riding abilities. Thanks so much for your videos, they inspire a lot!!
To be fair, when you're a professional rider you could probably take a penny-farthing to a bike park and make it look fun.
Especially when it's only for a couple runs and not for a year of riding this only on a daily basis
I agree...Sam Pilgrim bought a $179.00 rigid frame mountain bike from Wal*Mart and rode it on black diamond trails at Whistler...the bike actually passed with flying colors! ruclips.net/video/P6b9RxXGzSY/видео.html

I owned a SQ1 and it is by far and away the best looking color wise of the 3 SQ's. My only disappointment in the bike was the Boost 141 QR. It really doesn't make sense to me why they could not have made it as a thru axle boost but alas its not. Frankly however the only thing left stock on the bike was the seat, stem, bars and cranks. I replaced everything else..I bought a DT Swiss wheel set and found some 135QR end caps. Dropper, 11-46 11 Speed XT drivetrain and XT brakes. I rode that bike as hard as my talent allowed. I sold it and bought a gravel bike but I am honestly looking for another SQ. Hopefully a used one will pop up. Cheers Matt for making fun vids to watch.

matt you've just done Marin out of a load of money now that noone will buy the San quantin 3 lol
or people that can afford this but not the San Quantin will buy a Marin for the first time .... and they make more money
If you want the 3 you'll buy the 3. If you know the value of a dropper and a more respectable fork you'll go for that rather than paying to upgrade it later. This is a great bike for my area though where we've finally gotten a bike park and for people to test the waters
Usually I'd be telling people that budget focused bikes are all the same, and the brands don't have any intention investing huge R&D into these if they can put that focus into their flagship bikes, which then go on to represent the brand as a whole.
That said, I've noticed recently a few brands really are trying to mix it up a bit. Marin's affordable plus bikes have been extremely popular in my neck of the woods, and put steel back on the map as a building material of choice for hardtails/rigid bikes.
The frame is not identical. The frames geometry is identical but it's made with a different aluminum than the San Quentin one.
