As someone who studies and teaches history, I've always had a gripe with Ali Bhai's insistence over using it in a modern term. For example, at 16:30 he compares the state of the Rashidun and then the Umayyads and the Abbasids. The Rashidun Caliphate was indeed a golden age (as he compares to Marx's ideal world) but only for the less then 6% of the population that was Muslim. There were no institutions that were needed to build a socialist state. We only ever hear of the Amsar (the cities that the Muslims built such as Kufa and Basra). By contrast, the Abbasids had a lot more integration of the Muslim elites and everyone else. Al-Ma'mun even had a sort of a public health care program (which, from my studies, wasn't that different from our modern alternatives like ObamaCare). He talks about imperialism of the Umayyads and the Abbasids but only insofar as it relates to their oppression of the Alids. However, for the general public, the Abbasids were much more of an improvement over the Umayyads and the Rashidun. Additionally, the Romans and the Persians were no more imperialist than the Arabs were and the Great Arab Conquests were, by no means, any form of last resort. I'm not trying to paint the Caliphates in a bad light but if you wanna compare tradition with history, then you run into these problems. He's the one who made those historical claims.

The Rashidun Caliphate was indeed a golden age (as he compares to Marx's ideal world) but only for the less then 6% of the population that was Muslim. There were no institutions that were needed to build a socialist state. We only ever hear of the Amsar (the cities that the Muslims built such as Kufa and Basra). By contrast, the Abbasids had a lot more integration of the Muslim elites and everyone else. Al-Ma'mun even had a sort of a public health care program (which, from my studies, wasn't that different from our modern alternatives like ObamaCare). He talks about imperialism of the Umayyads and the Abbasids but only insofar as it relates to their oppression of the Alids. However, for the general public, the Abbasids were much more of an improvement over the Umayyads and the Rashidun.
Additionally, the Romans and the Persians were no more imperialist than the Arabs were and the Great Arab Conquests were, by no means, any form of last resort. I'm not trying to paint the Caliphates in a bad light but if you wanna compare tradition with history, then you run into these problems. He's the one who made those historical claims.
