  • In one of the most famous civilian-military confrontation in the history of the United States, President Harry S. Truman relieves General Douglas MacArthur of command of the U.S. forces in Korea. The firing of MacArthur set off a brief uproar among the American public, but Truman remained committed to keeping the conflict in Korea a “limited war.”
Truman relieved him of his duties on April 11, 1951.
MacArthur returned to the United States to a hero’s welcome. Parades were held in his honor, and he was asked to speak before Congress (where he gave his famous “Old soldiers never die, they just fade away” speech). Public opinion was strongly against Truman’s actions, but the president stuck to his decision without regret or apology. Eventually, MacArthur did “just fade away,” and the American people began to understand that his policies and recommendations might have led to a massively expanded war in Asia.

My grandpa was in n the army and was a sentry guard for MacArthur when he was at the imperial palace with Hirohito. My grandpa was ordered to watch Hirohito and he relented saying I don’t want to, he was responsible for the death of many Americans. His superiors told him we are not asking you to watch him soldier. We are ordering you to. His recollection of Hirohito was was a short guy. And his recollection of MacArthur was that of a tall guy who alway had a pipe or cigar when he walked by.

As a modern person I hear his voice as sounding like Richard Nixon, anyone else hear that?

Wanna know what’s interesting? Nixon was there listening to that speech. I believe he was a senator at the time

Truman made a mistake. The Korean War would have ended much quicker and we probably wouldn't have Kim Jong Un threatening the world with nuclear fire had MacArthur stayed in command.
