I wish I could afford a Maton like that one He’s playing. Absolutely wonderful! What a great instructor. There aren’t many professional artists out there that care enough to take the time to instruct so I tip my hat to you Sir. Thank you and know that what you are doing is appreciated.
Tommy is such a generous teacher. He not only gives great insight, he talks about mistakes that he has made along the way and the gaps in his knowledge and how he filled them. When Tommy Emmanuel tells you about his mistakes and how he corrected them, it makes it much easier to forgive your own playing problems and press on. Even Doc Watson said that it took him 10 years to get fully comfortable with thumb independence. If Doc and Tommy feel they had to struggle a bit, the rest of us can go a bit easier on ourselves.
Tommy Emmanuel is such a great teacher.We are all lucky that there's a RUclips to watch, and that Tommy is on here. Never take RUclips for granted. One the best inventions since the TV.

Thanks for sharing your expertise Tommy Emmanuel! I was shocked when you mentioned Ted Green's book Chord Chemistry. I was gobsmacked as I had purchased a copy in the early middle 70's, hidden in my book library collecting dust for many years! I got it back out, took it to the printers and got it spiral bound and it now sits out front and centre for practice. I play left-handed which is a challenge getting thumb picks and learning Ted Greens chords. I am now practicing 4 hours+ per day. Kudos to you...
I had a copy of Chord chemistry back in my teen years...mid 1990s....I still use those concepts today.
I've just learned "fraight train " and I love this tune. Thank you Tommy for this full of inspiration lesson.

I can play pretty much every metallica song including lead, most megadeth stuff I just learned killing road solo and have known tornado of souls solo for years, hangar 18 you name it.

I love to watch Tommy Emmanuel play guitar. The learning is going slow though because I am so entertained by just watching. I have been a professional guitar player for many years. Mostly in hard rock and heavy metal and Tommy has open my eyes up to a whole new type of playing. Very inspiring? 👍😎

Awesome and inspiring, as is everything Tommy does! The song is not by Chet Atkins as the description states although this particular arrangement might be by Atkins, it was written by Elizabeth Cotten, as @k2houija also points out below. It has frequently been mis-attributed to other artists and even copyrighted by some of them until the copyright was rightfully restored to Cotten. Chet Atkins was allegedly the first person to pay Cotten any royalties, although that was for another song.

I can learn these tunes and play them well enough to entertain myself and a few others, but I still have no understanding of music and so cannot improvise. I wish I could unlock this knowledge.

what TE doesn't say is whether the melody is played with or between the (base ) beat, or if some parts of the melody are and some aren't.
Where is episode one. I'd like to learn from the beginning.

Does some one know what gauge strings he uses ?
He generally swaps between martins and d'addarios. Not sure what guage (but probably mediums for the deeper base notes). He advocates for trying a lot of strings and swapping brands frequently.
He goes off the deep end at 4 minutes 20 seconds. Lol.
NO CLUE when he goes into ' flat 9th , sharp 7ths .... ' , but I know when to shut up & listen . Want to learn to play the guitar , we're listening to the RIGHT one !

im an intermediate guitar player and maybe more (I can play rithmic guitar/solos etc). But im an ABSOLUTE BEGINNER in this STUFF. Last week i started. I can pass the 1st bit. Thumb Independence is like climbing everest for the moment. Any advice? I can keep my thumb going alone without problems but when i start to play melody everything collapses.

How come some of his high notes in this video sound bad? It seems to me he was in (relatively!) bad shape this day, or his guitar was not set up right. I'm not used to bad tones like this from Tommy. For example 1:20 1:32 2:12 5:09 . But thanks for the lesson anyway.

Just one doubt, why isn't he using a classical guitar? Or is this another style?
Different style, plus it sounds good on the steel strings
So he starts demonstrating chords to find "where the melody is", you work out the melody with chords. Cool, basic open C, basic barre G7 3rd fret, basic barre Dm7 5th fret.... And then boom gone, different shape, inversion (that Dmin7 on 3rd fret), no more alternate bass etc and that s not even the start of the show. I mean seriously ... then the guys basically shows his improvisations on that song,,, So beginners, stay away from this or you might just give up on learning music.

How do I even start to learn this stuff? Anyone have any advise for learning more after chords? I don’t really understand when he goes to things like D minor

Breathe, buddy. Nothing is ruined. It's a live video and an interview situation, not a studio recording. Or is there anything you can't understand what he says or learn because of "a oh my god, a CHAIR, ther's a CHAIR, and it squeakes!"?
