So nice to have you trying SC for the first time! Just wanted to point out several facts that might help u put SC with more context:
-SC was announced 10 years ago. Now, the PU did not arrive until 2017, late 2017. Everything u saw in that video, did not exist in 2016.
-Regarding the funding of 500M, its important to understand that its the money that the company made, not the money spent. Also, usually for "cost of development" it is considered the salary and the marketing costs. We have this information and its around the 65% of 500m. The actual cost of SC is now around 290M. And do not forget, SC is mainly two project, the PU and SQ42, so u can say 145M for each game.
-Regarding the money spent by players. Well, usually to know if players spend a lot of money in games you take the average.
*The average of money spent by player in SC is around 120 USD.
    *LOL = 150.
    *WoW = Over 300
    *War Thunder = Over 300
*World of tanks = Over 300
    *EVE Online = Over 300
    *CSGO = 100
So, if you compare SC to other games, a player in SC spends way less money that a player in most multiplayer games, even free to play games. This is because all ships can be purchases and rented ingame, because the credits ingame are so easy to spend, because u can melt ships and buy others with store credits, etc. And also because all skins and so on, can also all of them be obteined ingame. In other worlds, in SC, every single item in the pledge store can already or will in the future be obteined playing ingame.
-SC is played by almost 60k players every day (with peaks to over 100k in weekends and events). People do not spend money for ilusions and dreams, people spend money for what the game has to offer right now.

Great breakdown! I feel like he would have benefitted greatly by having a regular SC player with him in discord, even watching him set quality to medium was painful to watch. I get it though, there's a lot of missing information or misleading information in the general public, "you need to spend thousands on ships, you need a $4k PC, vaporware, etc"..... I can't defend SC like some of the cultists, it's got its flaws for sure, but CIG hasen't gotten EVERYTHING wrong as some people think and the game has gotten far more playable over the past couple years.

    • @anshukandulna1844
      @anshukandulna1844 Год назад +1

They had spent over 400m by the end of 2020 according to their 2020 Financial Report. Taking into account 2021 and 3/4th of 2022. They might already have surpassed 500m in total spending( my estimate ~530m-550m). 500m raised in the website does not factor other income like subscription, merchandise, sponsorship and that 60m investment they took around 2018/19.
Ps: I think it's better to put the marketing budget as well to show their total spending

    • @marsaeternum4820
      @marsaeternum4820 Год назад +6

@@anshukandulna1844 I am going to update my numbers since they are from end of 2021. And what I get is:
-They spent in Marketing and Salaries, what is usually known as development costs, since 2012 to 2022 (yes, including an upwards projection of 2021 and 2022), around 520.760.000 USDs.
-That money includes salaries from people who is NOT a developer. However, we know the rate of Employee/dev in CIG. We can consider an average of 20%. This leads to 416.700.800 USDs spent in development.
-Now, that money is not part of the famous "500Ms, that includes investments received and "other" sources. Disregarding "other", they received a total of 63.2M USDs. If we consider 570.200.000 the total money they made as of 2022, we can say that they spent, in development, from the crowfund and "other", we get that they spent 328.974.315 USDs across Star Marine, Arena Commander, PU, TOW and SQ42, and others.
However to summarize, i said before "they spent 145M in their main two projects PU and SQ42" refering to my data as of 2021. I can update it now, they spent 165.000.000 for each SQ42 and PU. - this is still nothing.

btw the "ship for 80 crew" is the Javelin, not the Carrack (I think that's a crew of 6) that you saw (2h16 in). Besides, a lot is missing to make crews necessary to operate big ships: life support, power management, ship components tear & wear, fire propagation. Basically that'll give the Star Trek vibes they're after. A solo player will have a very hard time keeping a big ship working on their own.

      @puntmannoor3403 Год назад +2

@@rhetor4mentor13 It is how the game will be balanced, most people will either play solo or with a group of friends, usually not more than 4-5 people. In those cases, ships like the Corsair, MSR or Constellation are perfect. It has enough space, is effective in an experienced crews hands and is efficent in regards to cost.
For those who like to run pro squads of up to dozens of players, we are talking 20-30 peope, capital ships make sense. A well experienced org could use a Kraken as a moving headquarters, dividing themselves into a crews for different task. In this way, a large ship can operate at 100% combat effectiveness and actually make money intead of loosing money.
Large ships will be balanced in that way.
Also insurence and reclaiming a large javelin should be up to 48 hours in my opinion. Players should not be able to just pull capital ships after theirs gets blown up within a day or two of waiting time.

The AI system you mentioned in 3:33:41 is actually being worked on by CIG its called QUANTA , it simulates economy ai and npc movement and actions and will soon be represented in game by actual NPCs when the technology is finished . For example a miner found a pocket of ore at a moon , now it gets flooded by miners wich then sends pirates to intercept those miners wich prompts security to patrol the area because of reports and you'll be able to see that process evolve in game , the building interior generator is also being worked on and it stemmed from the technology developed to make procedural caves and that tech keeps improving more and more as development continues meaning after all those tools and tech are done planets buildings systems and points of interest will be able to be generated and made quickly with high levels of detail and fidelity. It's really amazing unfortunately we don't get to see it's full potential until later as it's still being built but we've seen tastes of it here and there with the weekly show "Inside Star Citizen "

need to keep the graphics on high, turn the clouds off(or med) if you want the planet space stations to run better. The game will not use all of your gpu, Its CPU heavy. The 4 major space ports only expect to get around 35-50 fps. Out in space or other space stations/planets you should be getting around 60-90 fps. The game is still a broken mess but if your willing to learn it and deal/work around the know issues there is moments of wonder that no other game has done yet(in the space genre at least). As opposed to focusing on the money try make your streams a "zero to hero" type entertainment where you can show that doing this is possible.
Having said that you will probably get short circuited by people giving you money.

Yeah, that's the inexperienced player bias in SC. Caring too much about real money, insurance, ship costs and assuming they're trying to steal your wallet at each step. The more you play, the more irrelevant all that becomes, you don't need to go through the Pledge Store more than 1 time, for your Starter pack.

  • @j.d.4697

Even SC fans poke fun at SC, it's just such a crazy game in all sorts of different ways.
You don't *have to* spend any real money on any of the ships.
Apart from the most recent ship which remains in the pledge store for a month or so, all ships can and should be bought in-game.
There isn't really anything to gain from buying them from the pledge store, it's recommended only if you want to support the development and maintenance of the game financially.
I did spend a bit extra in the pledge store though, so now I can keep exchanging ships for store credit to try other ships at no cost.

It's actually split into components for hydrogen and oxygen, since it's a chemically fueled rocket you need an oxidizer (O2) and fuel (H2) that combine to produce thrust. I'm still wondering why I nodded 'no' on 2h15m10, I was listening to the stream and there was a short delay, so it could be as answer to an earlier question or my reaction to VoIP not working. For the $600 price tag, I can provide some perspective on these prices: As SC being in development and ship stats in flux players can 'melt' (sell) their ships and buy with the store credit other ships. Included in the pledging system you can CCU to higher priced ships only paying the difference. To avoid players daily melting and buying ships most of the ship sales are limited in time. In the beginning some players have amassed a huge amount of CCU's in their buyback list in their accounts by rolling store credits and are able to sell ships on secondary market on reduced prices by chaining speculative CCU's, that utilize ship price increases on release. So, to counteract this CIG is using warbond CCU's, buy-back tokens, limited gift ability. As I understand these elevated prices are the result of his CCU gaming, aka it is baked into the cake. Give or take the benefits it looks to be a thing CIG is actually pursuing this (one thing indicates this is the sale of LTI tokes at or right before the anniversary sale), benefitting long-term players.

A lot of people misjudge what should be in SC already and how far they should be. What needs to be kept in mind was their need and desire to create the tech to run or make things that didn't exist or didn't fit. Right now the biggest is server meshing. Ifg you look into it - it should blow your mind, as well as the other tech they developed. Once server meshing and container streaming is good then a lot of other things can happen. Until server meshing - most of it cannot happen. So, improvements to AI, the addition of other systems and a ton of other things all hinge on proper server meshing. It should also make you excited for the potential for other future games as well once this tech is good to go. You can't look at SC like any other game, because it is not.
Respect to you for keeping an open mind while approaching SC. A lot of people do not.

You pick one person to manage the crew's fancy ships and equipment, but then while you're playing you all share. Just like in DnD you often will see groups pool their money and buy a bunch of stuff like NPC and monster mini figures and new adventure books and then the DM is responsible for managing it all.

Ok, let's talk in-game currency... you could get about 400k/hour(I'm talking last update values as I haven't farmed that much in 3.17) by doing bounty missions(kinda changes every update so keep in mind this might be somewhat off), if you really get good at it and get the way of doing missions right you might get up to like 650k/hour consistently
So when you do the conversions between in-game and real money it shouldn't be a 1-to-1 comparison, pledging in the store it's never a "value" purchase, as most ships can be acquired in-game without much effort(compared to the hundreds of dollars to actually get it in the store) most ships can be bought with less than 10 hours of doing cargo runs or bounty hunting missions.
Before the last major update, for example, I had only the same starter pack as you, but I was able to earn in-game lots of different ships, including the big yacht(890 jump) just by playing the game
so you get an idea of how long it takes, it took me about 2 weeks in the holidays playing about 4 to 6 hours a day to get the most expensive ship in the game (890 jump)

All the ships are and will be available to buy inside the game. Even the developers are very super clear that you are buying these expensive ships to support the development, why do people always start talking about SC by addressing this?... I expend 2k on the game but I did that because I really love the game, the project and want to support it... No one needs to expend more than 75 or 100$ on this game. I get the hate Star.Citizen gets...i was one of them until this past summer when i actually tried it out. Ive been gaming for decades, and this game has brought new experiences. It really is a game that has to be played to understand.
I also feel like the $500 million thing will take a different light as the years go by. Already it is said gta6 will cost 2 billion....and it's basically just a (presumably) better version of gta5. Star citizen will cost less then half that while truly trying to innovate.
People seem to take for granted how amazing it is to get inside a ship, leave a planet, go into space, and land on another planet...with 0 loading screens. I can only think of 1 other game that can do that, and it's been 10 years for them to finally achieve thier promise and vision.

To add to that; they are nearly in the next phase of testing its new Persistence Entity Streaming tech, which is meant to remember the track the exact location of every entity/object ie Med Pen, Gun, Can Of Space Soda in the entire Verse. Attempting to replicate another aspect of the real universe; the fact that nothing is ever "destroyed", its just recycled. Think about the implications of that technology; true persistence of EVERYTHING in a 24/7 Open Universe Game Engine. What the fuck do you think that is? ITS A FUCKING META VERSE ENGINE!!! LOL.

If someone has the disposable income to spend a few thousand dollars on a game over the course of years is really their business. I spend 8k every year on golfing and that is a game too. I also have almost 1000 dollars into Star Citizen spent since 2017 and I will continue spending money on it until I get to about 3k. To me star citizen isn't just a game, rather, it is what I wanted a game to be since I played my first played Star Wars Jedi Outcast. What game do you think you are playing? What do you think Star Citizen is? Though I should note that during free fly's, since there is a lot of new traffic from others who also want to try out the game, server performance, and by extension your experience with the game, may be degraded. If you jump into the game to try out stuff, don't be hesitant to ask in global chat about stuff or even for help.
I've seen plenty of streamers who wanted to get "the real experience without any help" and relegated themselves to not ask in chat for stuff, even though for the majority of players this would actually be their real experience: Stuff seems weird or something doesn't seem to work, ask in chat what's going on.
The community is generally extremely helpful since they know that there is a steep learning curve at the beginning (we've all been there after all) and they genuinly want newcommers to have a good time. Not everyone is as generous with their credits (there are people who don't grind their way to 6 million within 2 hours) and so you can encounter people telling you how to make money quickly rather than just sending you some, but that often happens when you're basically begging for money. No one likes the chat getting spammed with transfer requests. Other than that the community is overwhelmingly welcomming. Some will offer you ships to do missions in, some will offer you a job becomming their turret gunner, nearly everyone will gladly offer advice.
Also regarding the money they raised and spent: Don't forget that they are keeping a live service active during this development time. And those services went live pretty early on. Alpha 2.0 (Arena Commander and Star Marine modules from the main menu, basically the in-game dogfighting game and in-game FPS game, meaning that at some point it's planned that you will be able to sit down into a simulation seat within the PU and access those modules from within the main game) went live 2015. The Hangar module where you were able to look at your ships and configure them was available since 2013, so they had to spend money on servers not only to develop the game but also provide access to it from almost the beginning. There is a not insubstantial chunk of money going into the live service every year.

Great video! I think you gave it a really fair review.
Controversial funding model and early studio mistakes aside, you could probably at least understand why others might get so passionate about the game.
Definitely not enough content for it to be anyone's main game unless they are a VERY specific type of gamer.
Also they have one or two more major engine modifications on the way, so bugfixing current placeholder missions isn't a priority. It's more of a sandbox to screw around in with some simple delivery or courier missions, but often things will break.
You were actually extremely adept at picking up how the map attempts to work, as well as controlling your ship. I'm very impressed at your skills as a first timer.

The next major patch 3.18 brings OPTIMIZATION FINNALY along with a teir zero implementation of a long awated new profession called salvage . The game though flourishes with player organized events and creativity. From races spanning half a goddamn planet on little buggies to massive 50 vs 50 fleet battles and even multi combat operations with troops on the ground and in the air it makes for very interesting and wild gamplay. And not just pvp but mass mining events with pvp players protecting them against pirates out for their hard earned gems the game gains depth and with each update that deepens and gets more refined. I hope you stick around and watch it evolve from here they'll try what no one else has simply cuz they can because they have us crazy backers , and while some see that as never ending creep I see it as infinite innovation and never ending new content. As long as in the next year the game is a little more optimized I'm happy seeing how far they get to go

Just to add some context for people wondering why it's taken ten years and how they've amassed $500 million in crowdfunding:
The reason it's taken so long is because there were no engines or middleware suites available at scale for the project, so CIG had to build a lot of it from scratch. They started with the CryEngine 3 for its global illumination and procedural IK which cut out a lot of dev time. However, they still had to gut the engine and convert it to a 64-bit floating point processing environment for the advanced entity placements within the physics grids in real-time, as well as making a seamless universe with no loading screens after the initial load.
They needed to build out four pieces of middleware to make Star Citizen functional. Planet Tech, Object Container Streaming, Persistent Entity Streaming and Dynamic Server Meshing. They finished the core Planet Tech, and Object Container Streaming. Players are currently testing Persistent Entity Streaming, which is a required prerequisite for dynamic server meshing. They finished the core tech for static server meshing, and it's expected to arrive in the patch after 3.18 (which contains salvage and PES). Once server meshing is brought online, they can then start bringing the handful of other star systems online and flyable capital ships, starting with Pyro. Basically, the actual gameplay development is just really getting underway and you'll start to see a lot more of it come online with 4.0, now that most of the tech hurdles are done.

To be clear, they mismanaged the earlier years. They got way more money than they planned, and also ending up setting up some lofty goals.
They attempted to fix these two issues by outsourcing a bunch of work. As you can tell the game is very complicated, so it just didn't work. They then had to spend time and money bringing all that stuff back in-house, losing a lot of earlier work and also the effort needed to build up teams and pipelines.
They've gotten much better at it but I almost completely write off anything before 2015. 2016-2019 they did better but still had issues in terms of promises and deadlines.
Since then they've gotten so much better. I wouldn't say faster so much as honest. I don't mean that in a personal way, it's a corporation and they're not gonna tell everything.
Honest in terms of them cutting the long term roadmap. They should have known better than to try and predict that far. They've also gotten more honest with dev updates. They used to show R+D stuff that they hinted was on the way that's still not in 4 years later. Now they just show stuff actively being worked on and in the game within 6 months.
They used to feed off fan hype by saving surprises for events, with big reveals of new stuff. Now we get to hear about every little thing they work on every month, and the fans know exactly what to expect. In the past you might hype yourself up that they might release an older popular concept ship into the game for a holiday event or something, but now we know if it doesn't show up on the reports to not expect it.

@@vorpalrobot they did not mismanage and if u think so is because u are misinformed. In the early days they spent every single euro they received in growing faster. At a point they had more than 6 different outsourced studios working for SC to make it faster. The only thing that changed here is that the community decided to push them to a more wider project. This is not mismanagement, this is adapting.
Relating to deadline, this also a big part of misinformation. Most, if not all, of the "deadlines" (they only had like 2-3 deadlines) that were not kept, the reasons were explained in its context and it was always supported, understood and well received by the community. Those "missed deadlines" were deadlines to do a different game than the one that the community wanted. They didnt kept this deadlines because they were from another different project that what the community wanted.

I've been with SC for 10 years and also happen to have been a developer across 4 games in my career over that time. There's a lot of SC's development that people just do not understand. I wish I could spend time with new players talking to them and showing them through the game and explaining why it's taken so long.

yea its why the hate wagon has a elephant in the room that gets overlooked, the fact those with dev experience who are well informed on CIG, basically side with CIG and not the hate wagon, but even then its not rocket science, i mean most folks cant even take the time to use calculator to do some basic maths of how much a game costs to make, there are reasons most AAA refuse to give financials on specific costs for their games and instead roll those expenses into a general operating costs so a give ofhand dev cost is taken at face value designed to downplay how much they cost to make as investors are highly fickle things,.
if u know the active dev count per year, just times it by the average wage and = ur already got a base value on wages alone that is the same or greater then general estimates given for most AAA games, that doesnt have legal, insurance or facility operating/maintenance costs or marketing which typically scales up with the wage expense to being the same value up to double...
with that in mind 500million for 10 years is looking well below industry levels for such a game were they would probably spend easily over 1 billion by this point to have replicated the same work, obviously why despite all this time, nobody wants to give a go.
but thats just example of consumer ignorance and why when they cite the most expensive games ever made... crickets sounds in agreement can be heard from over in the dev corner,... again the elephant in the room those who hate ignore, because the majority of folks who do the work dont agree with their opinion.
CIG aint perfect, but compared AAA they have raised the bar on what can be done, should be done and how it should be done as well, with only a few points were id say otherwise and the time to develop is not one them, because from experience they are actually breaking records vs what other AAA can do within same manpower and budget, so sure it would be nice if day 1 they had a pre-established AAA studio with 1000+ staff ready to go and a secure annual budget, but thats the con of this kind development, but as it goes i think the pro's far surpass the cons, when u can get it to work as CIG have done...
unfortunately its a magnet scammers as well... but looking AAA these days... there basically just putting a spit shine on a turd anyways and releasing it with a AAA badge, if thats not scam i dont know what is.

The ability to understand how intuitive this game could be is an indication of superior intellect.
