  • As the first living and the first enlisted Airman to be awarded the Medal of Honor, SSgt Maynard “Snuffy” Smith was not your typical hero. But on May 1, 1943, he proved that true heroes don’t require a resumé, just the opportunity to prove what they’re made of.

What a wonderful story of a particular man's courage and determination in the face of numerable odds. On that day in WW2, SSgt Maynard “Snuffy” Smith stepped up to fight-on and saved his most of his crew-mates from certain disaster. He is a living example of a hero. Australian American Association, Brisbane.

+3,500 bullet holes, he left out the fact, that five thousand men were lined up, for his award presentation, and he couldn't be found, he was on punishment detail, peeling potatoes. Again! My uncle knew him, U. Elvin was a tail Gunner, in B-17 s. Smith loved to argue!

Snuffy Smith saved my only Sister Beth Compagnone's life in 1981. Thank you Maynard! ❤️

      How?

@@Brian-dq2jc My only Sister Beth had been human trafficked and Snuffy was walking his Beat and struck up a Convo & when he was done he'd convinced her to go back home because the streets were no place for her. He violated Minneapolis Police Department policy by driving her home to Edina to safety. 👊💙🇺🇸

Maybe you're thinking of another Snuffy Smith, as he was nowhere near Minneapolis/St Paul in '81, let alone a police officer there. He'd retired from his police journal publication a decade earlier and died in '84.

Dirk's interview on Drumeo makes me want to invest more highway time listening to Megadeath.

This seems to have been Snuffy’s only mission. When they came to give him the MOH he was on KP duty for missing his next mission. They had to borrow a uniform for for the ceremony. Andy Rooney admiringly refer to Snuffy as “a typical Army (Air Force) f*** up.”

Very cool deal. Thank you Snuffy. Hey can you guys please check out the "Fog Bound on an Icicle" series on my channel? (4 episodes) It is the story of my grandfather who was a B24 pilot in the Aleutian Islands and also a B47 Stratojet Pilot. His story is worthy of a spot on your show. It would be the coolest thing ever if you guys could make that possible. Thanks.
