  • This is the next episode in my Guitar Crap series where I take a look at various guitar gadgets under $30. I take a closer look at the Thimble Slide this week. This cool little gadget is designed to give you a slide when you need it but still allow you to fret the guitar accurately.
You can purchase one here: thimbleslidest...

After building my first Cigar Box Guitar several years ago I picked up a copper tube coupling at Lowes to use as a slide. It was too big so I padded the inside. I think I can get rid of the padding now thanks to this video. I really like the shorter slide that fits over the middle section of your ring or pinky finger. It allows you to mute the bass strings when you use it. Now I have to modify my copper coupling and play Sister Goldenhair.

Slides are a funny thing. There's a million of them on the market but there's just as many opinions. I think this gadget is pretty cool though. Thanks for asking.

@@musicalmiscellany I cut a 1/4 section out of a 3/4 inch copper coupling and smoothed it out. I then compressed it to fit my third finger and it is so comfortable. I need to get another coupling so I can make one for my little finger too since I like to use one or the other finger depending on what I'm playing. I'm thrilled you posted this Guitar Crap episode. Thanks!

Never even thought of that! Used to make them out of wine bottle necks 🍷 usually with open tunings. Nice tip

It definitely fills a niche for someone who like to play fretted and slide together.

Thanks Gary. It may look similar to some other slides but it is a pretty unique shape. It doesn't replace a standard slide but it does fill a certain need that other slides do not.

I usually play slide in standard. Although I have a 1 1/4" copper slide made from a gas pipe (not a water one like at Home Depot) I really like, I may have to get this one. Can't have too many slides!

That's one of the great things about slides... you can make them out of pretty much anything. Thanks for watching.

Hunh. I've seen those advertised. It works pretty well on your finger. I Think I will stick to a full slide. Musci room is looking good.

It totally depends on your playing style. It fills a niche but go with what works for you. Thanks for checking it out John.

@@musicalmiscellany Yup. I don't have all those up the neck licks - they make that slide very worthwhile and add a lot.
