Heated Hot Grips with relay no flat batteries to Yamaha MT07

  • How to fit a relay to heated grips on a motorcycle. This means the heated grips can only be turned on when the engine is running and acts as a fail safe so you can't walk away from the motorcycle and leave the grips on. Saves your battery.
    When the engine is turned off at the end of your journey the relay shuts off the power to the grips. The relay should be switched by a live source. I favour the rear light as that's always on when the engine is on.

    My hot grips were draining the battery on my 125 when it wasn't on. With your video and help from my bikes wiring diagram I was guided through the main points of installing a relay. Now, with it wired via the number plate light, things seem to be working as they should. Thanks very much for taking the time to make this.

    Just done this to my 2018 MT09SP with Yamaha heated grips, brought a 20A micro Relay from ebay and it works a treat, no more worrying if I left the grips on, once I get to work. Brilliant, thank you.

    Thanks mate! I will be trying this on my old cbr125. I know the grips have auto off like people said, but that doesnt stop someone turning them on if you leave the bike parked for most of the day.

    Great vid! £60 saved me today by not getting the bike shop to do it. There's bugger all space under the mt07 seat to get the relay in, tho.

    Enjoy folks.
    All the comments about the system already having a cut off around voltage frustrate me. Far too many times in the past, if it’s cold you only get one chance to start the bike if the heater grips were previously left on. Hence I found this solution. For me it’s a no brainer and ensures the grips turn off straight away saving your battery. Hence I fitted to my girlfriends bike. Ensures your battery level until Oxford up their game.
    All the best folks.

    Does it matter if you splice the negative to the relay from a live or neutral wire on the bikes existing circuit that is powered by the ignition?
    As I have tried doing this with R&G heated grips, the system is basically identical to the Oxford ones.
    They work when hardwired straight to the battery, but when I use the same set up as in the video... nothing.
    Only thing I'm doing different is using the number plate light circuit to splice the negative, which is fine as it's always on.
    But don't know if it's coming from the live or neutral wire of the light. Just wondering if it matters 🤔

    You installed the fuse after the relay. In a case of short circuit the relay is not saved by the fuse. In your diagram the fuse is infront of the relay. I mentioned that after installing it on my tracer.

    • @adamzworld
      @adamzworld 3 года назад

      @Tigrast am I right in thinking that the fuse should go between the battery and relay then, rather than between relay and heated grip?

    • @tigrast

      Exactly...instructions on that (german), but the diagrams show the fact: cdn1.louis.de/content/catalogue/articles/zusatz/anl/10032748_Saito_Heizgriffe_Mon-Anl_D-GB-F_16.pdf

    I couldn't find exactly the same relay as yours,however seller told me that relay PA66-GF25 is exactly the same and has the same functionality. Only thing that I do not understand is how to match the pins, your pins are 30,85,86 and 87 and mine has 1,2,3 and 5. Anyone can help mewith this?

    So I need to buy a relay? Can't you just connect it straight to the blue wire from the tail light?

  • @wilsonjohnson9774
    @wilsonjohnson9774 2 года назад

    Just a simple standard simple note! Why do you need a simple standard relay or any kind of relay , just wire the - of the grips to the - of the battery or ground of the bike , and the + of the grips to the ignition of the bike , that is only on when the bike is on, the best place is at a proper fuse, then put a switch on this line between the fuse and the grip , in a comfy spot. If you do not know what a relay is used for, look it up before you put it on you-tube!

    Hey there, i have one question. What would happen if I connect the wires from my grips directly to the back light, positive to positive and negative to negative?

    • @jayash6108
      @jayash6108 7 лет назад

      I would imagine it would act the same, when you turn the key, the grips will be live, when ignition is off, no power to the rear light thus no power to grips.....same in principal

    • @woohoodoh
      @woohoodoh 7 лет назад

      Well the problem is that you probably will blow a fuse since the wiring probably isn't made for that current. A relay basically is a switch that uses another current to switch on whatever is connected through the relay

  • @jimpion
    @jimpion 6 лет назад

    Well... I screwed SOMETHING up! I installed my heated grips using the relay, jumped off the tail light as a switched live . I made sure the grips were heating up. Everything looked right when I turned the key. But when I hit the starter button, something trips, and the whole thing goes dead.
    I removed the relay, and disconnected anything involving the grips, so it’s as it was while the bike was running this past weekend Same thing happens, and it stays dead.
    If I disconnect a battery terminal, then reconnect it, it powers up again. Then the above repeats.
    What do I do now?

    • @skycop2812
      @skycop2812 6 лет назад

      I honestly wouldn’t have a clue what’s happened without having a look at it. Somethings not right and I assume wired wrong.

    • @jimpion

      Skycop281 Lol... it had me REALLY puzzled for a few days. I checked voltage on the battery: fine. Removed everything I installed: issue not resolved. Did a electrical system check by following along with the Haynes manual. Everything good. Then, while puzzling over everything, I dropped the screw driver on a battery terminal, and the power came back on. Still wouldn’t start though, everything would short out when I tried the starter. Tapped on the negative again, same thing happened. Tried tightening the loose negative and positive battery terminal screws (they were both SLIGHTLY loose, but loose). Problem solved. Lol.
      The relay is now back in place, and everything is working great. Thank you very much. Your video was a big help! I just missed a very critical step. That being, tighten the battery terminal screws all the way.

    I suggest to use auxiliary connector. You can find it under fuel tank at left side. It is fused and connected to ignition.
    Plugs are available at ebay.

    If you would like to use heated grips and usb charger you can use power splitter

    oxfort heated grips have sesnsor and go off when the bike is not running... if you have the cheap chinese one i will understand but not with the this.
    such a waste of time 😊

    • @skycop2812
      @skycop2812 6 лет назад +2

      Ivan Nisotovski. It’s still not good enough and far too many people get left with enough battery for one attempt to start. If your first start doesn’t work people get left stranded, hence it’s very worth it and about time Oxford upped their game. It’s the perfect failsafe.
