I just did this fix. The tool Shae Alex recommends from Harbor Freight would be helpful, for sure. If you don't have it, jack up the right tire & remove it. Set a jack stand, for safety. Now you can get to the tensioner pulley from within the wheel well, with a 13mm wrench. The pulley is just above the CV shaft. Use the box-in side of your wrench and use a 6-sided, to avoid damaging the bolt. Have someone from above slip the belt off the alternator as you tension-release the pulley from below.
So how hard is it with the serpentine belt tool to get the belt on the new alternator pulley, because l didn't have the tool and l cannot turn the bolt far enough from below to get the belt on the pulley.
@@matthewclement1792 It's easy with the serp belt tool, from above. REAL easy. The tool gives you leverage. That's the problem from down-below, under the Windstar. If you access the idler pulley bolt from below, it takes some leverage. It's not tough. I'm an old man and I could get pretty good leverage on the idler.
Lol duude..never changed alternator and reading comments, what you said maybe I'm overthinking but just reading what you said I'm like aww crap, this is gonna be a friggin nightmare aha
Thank You Alex just did my alternator change out and it was perfect...the belt was a bit tricky getting back on so I slightly moved the alternator to the right to get it on...sprayed some liquid wrench on the 3 bolts and waited for 2 hours...they came right off...Thanks Again!!!!
Yours is the best for removal of an alternator on a Windstar, (my 2002 is the same). What makes yours the best is that you mention and show using a tension removal tool (should have known, being a Ford, they hate it if you can use a standard tool, puts there overprices dealer wrench guys out of work)) . and no climbing underneath and fumbling from underneath needed as well.. Really great instructions. thanks.
What a very cool last name you have. Is your family the ones that discovered the Faraday cages? I have 2 Faraday cages. I want one I can keep my truck in.
I should have watched your video first because I was the dumbass who spent those hours using the tensioner tool only to not fucking work I hulkedthat shit and it went on just as easy as you demonstrated Now it's beer time
7yrs late, friggin hilarious xD, got 96windstar an never changed an alternator, it's that tentioner an belt taking off an putting back on that has me worried. Just reading comments to get more info an yours cracked me up lol goodstuff
Shae Alex Faraday, your video is informative in steps to take, but you just skip over the using the belt tool to put the belt back on the pulley, which is the only tough part of the replacement.
Don't rent the pulley tool from Advance auto parts. The crow's feet have a notch that will really make the job difficult. If your going to rent. Autozone has the one without the notch. Or just buy the one without the notch. the notch at the tip of the crow's feet basically keep the wrench from just sliding over the not, it has to be slid over by the side.
I just replaced mine. I rented the serpentine belt tool from O'reilys, (auto store that i purchased new alternator from). I had to take one end of the power steering hose off to make enough room to loosen belt with belt tool. It worked great. Thanks for the great video Shae!

You should fully charge the battery before you put the alternator in place. If the battery is dead ( or really low ) and you install the alternator without charging the battery - you have a very good chance of damaging the new alternator when you start the engine.
Have 96 gotta replace, some of these comments pretty dang gold, thx for this, think I can do this without raging lol
You are so smart and you helped me so much with this video. Thank you, thank you

What size are the bolts on top to remove the alternator from the bracket??
Now does this work for a 2000 model

Thank for posting this video, I just removed my dead alternator! This the first repair I had to do myself and the video really helped me!
Thanks again. I've been fortunate so far to not have to replace the OEM on my 2002. It looks fairly simple to remove and replace. Good job, thanks.
What is that wire connected to the front bolt I don't have that this is a 03 Ford Windstar lx right?
I didn't have the pulley tool. I just pulled the belt back and shimmied it off. Same for putting it back on.

Please let me know what is the torque for the 3 alternator bolt
You ever find out?
Hot Damn! I've got to do this tomorrow, and it really looks pretty straightforward. Thanks.
Nice video.. I see the bolt pattern had changed once again. My 96 has two bolts on top and one through.. Yours had three bolts on top. Very easy.

Thanks you answered my problem ( That ten millimeter
nut covered with Black plastic ) and I subscribed too. good job thanks again
Is this like the 2004
How do you get the wrench on the tensioner? There is no room

I just strong armed it without the tensioner and managed not to loose a finger.
@@baverdi lol xD, thinking that's what I'm a have to do, don't got fancy belt/tentioner tools
Thanks alot for this video, I am so happy I did it myself, you saved me a few bucks lol....
wonderful video, great job thanks
With gloves on, you can just pull that belt off with your hand and a little elbow grease. It will be tricky to get back on that way though!
thanks for the awesome video.
How long did you take to finish the whole work?
7 min no tool. Just pull the belt.2000 windstar.

Thank you...
U can just pull the belt to remove it and put it back on. U don't need a tension tool.

Thanks for the suggestion. No one else has mentioned this before.
Or just jump it with another car and let it run for a few minutes before removing the jumper cables
