  • A B.C. woman is crediting her free self-defence classes with preventing what could have been a devastating attack.
Maria Hansen lives in the Comox Valley. Last Saturday night, she went to close her gate after her friend left and says that's when a man grabbed her by the arm and slammed her into the gate twice.
Hansen says that's when she remembered her training.
    Kylie Stanton has her story.

Global News doesn't appear to want to solve this crime, just suggest that women should be trained to defend themselves. In the States, they'd be suggesting some time learning how to shoot with their pistol. The problem is too many criminals and drug addicts, and the failure of law enforcement to deal with unprovoked attacks. In Kingston, Ontario, too many people are attacked with a knife, for no apparent reason. It's obvious to all that it's due to drug abuse!

This is why you should be able to defend your home, business, and their occupants by any means necessary and with any level of force. Out in public is another story, but your property is a safe space. If an implement is legal for you to own, you should be allowed and encouraged to use it to keep your safe space a safe space. Hand to hand self defence training is good, but against a bigger person who also has a basic understanding of melee combat, it’s useless. Guns and knives are the great equalizers.

A citizen is allowed to defend themselves, but not to use excessive force in doing so. So if you are fighting for your life, you are being told that you cannot use every bit of strength you have as you could be charged if the perp is hurt or worse. Soldiers are trained to shoot to kill. Police are trained to shoot to kill. But the average citizen is not given that measure. Make it nearly impossible for honest citizens to own guns and use them in self defence. But, if you are a criminal and use a gun in the commission of a crime, you will not get a stiff sentence because the offender is really just a good guy that is misunderstood. When a many times convicted drug dealer that went to jail many times turned her life around, she made a very interesting comment on her RUclips channel. When asked about if convicts steal stuff from other inmates, she said “Oh no, never, because if you were caught, the offender would be severely beaten.” Interesting that the criminals themselves have a more effective punishment than the Canadian Government.

    • @TheRealAaronSmith
      @TheRealAaronSmith Месяц назад

There's a lot wrong here to unpack...
Let's start off with clarifying that self defence in Canada is a legal defence to what is otherwise a crime, which means you actually have to be charged and go to court to exercise that "right", and that under no circumstances does it mean that you cannot be charged, EVEN if the police know that you operated within the realm of the law's expectation of you. If you strike someone, that's an assault. If they were assaulting you, it may be self defence. That's the courts decision, not yours, nor that of the police. Section 34 of the Criminal Code of Canada is a good place to start with that.
You are correct that you cannot use excessive force, however that DOES NOT mean you CANNOT strike someone as hard as you possibly can, assuming you have just cause. The requirement is of "reasonable" force, or what is fairly believed to be such given the circumstances.
Neither military nor police are trained to "shoot to kill". From a militaristic point of view, it's far better to wound and maim than it is to kill. Dead bodies can be left for later recovery or exchange for quite some time. Seriously wounding them, on the other hand, likely takes them out of the fight, and in order to help them(which is usually going to be part of the plan), that's going to require at least one more person, likely two in that moment, if not more in order to provide suppressive fire, etc, that gives you more targets, , and if successfully recovered, they'll then need to be removed from the battlefield for treatment, which takes more people out of the fight, more resources, more time, cost, you name it. I'm not here to provide lessons on doctrine and tactics though, so moving on to police. For cops, they aren't shooting to kill, they shoot to stop a threat. That may involve killing them, but not necessarily. In either case, if the goal was to kill, they'd be shooting for the head, especially in today's world of precision magnified optics being pretty well a standard. And they'd be sending follow up shots to ensure kills, not stopping once the threat is neutralized and then attempting to secure them and render aid.
Point for you on civvies acquiring and using firearms(or anything else for that matter) for self defence. You're pretty much spot on, not gonna argue it even if it's not perfectly nuanced(as if there is such a thing with our legal system)
And finally, again, some good points. Ironically, sometimes the best justice our system sees take place is delivered from the hands of one criminal, to another, that has violated some unwritten rule of decency. Kinda like how the system is limited on what it can do to someone who "attacks"(hopefully you catch my drift) children, but if you put that person in jail, even moreso if they don't get put in protective custody, their fellow inmates are likely to *ahem* "deal with them" to some extent. For better or worse, those involved know how it goes down and aren't exactly against it. We all know that there are crimes where the harshest punishment the system can dole out isn't nearly enough to account for the crime, and that's where such motivated individuals redeem themselves in the eyes of society to some degree. A necessary evil, so to speak.
      Anyways, carry on.

Why do you never say what the man looks like? How can people keep watch for a dangerous criminal and a threat to the community, and report to police if they spot this man - if people don't even know what he basically looks like? It makes no sense. Why does the news never give a description in news stories i.e. skin color, height, weight, build, etc. of dangerous offenders? It's very frustrating and not helpful.

Sometimes people can't give accurate(enough) descriptions. You could easily end up describing 1/3 of the nation's population, which is only going to make it harder to deal with as they'll end up with reports about people that have nothing to do with it, but some yuppie Karen thinks her neighbour fits the description and calls it in lol no matter how it plays out from there, it's detrimental to the goal.

Self defence moves only stuns them only got me about half way but military combat training from a war vet when they use a knife do this and this that was way more effective when a weapon is involved you fight till your dead if giving them what they want doesn't work and you can't run away. Do your best to take them with you. I was in a woman's self defence class I was the practice attacker for the instructor he said come at me any way you want I won when I countered his moves then verbally said strike here and here and here while not hitting him. Should be taught in school. We used to teach practical things there at one point.
Most people would be qualified for black belts by the age the graduate high school if we did consistent martial arts in school starting at kindergarten. Doesn't even have to be poised as self defence or a martial art. Most martial arts are basically yoga when you first start. All balance, mobility, learning and mastering your own body, etc. good stuff for kids. Later on you can teach them to defend themselves when they're likely to come across a threat that warrants such action and are at least approaching the maturity level to discern the difference.
On the downside, you'd have those who will exploit it for their own gain, as we already see in martial arts circles.
