I really, truly appreciate this man. The world would be a much better place if there were more Kieth Owen personalities wandering around, interacting with people. I just cannot get enough of him.
At Rickson's seminar last year (Gracie Academy Torrance), over half of the participants were Black Belts.. the energy in the air was electric when Rickson stepped on the mat.
That's too bad but I can say without a shadow of a doubt that every seminar I have attended, I have learned something. No teacher knows everything and you can learn from different points of view. Put money aside, start a seminar fund, you'll learn something for sure.
Good point in this video - way too many Black Belts get their rank and then seem to think that the belt will somehow sustain them without any effort on their part! Ed Parker said that you only had two choices - grow or die. You either have to learn or stagnate.
I agree so much. I know a lot of TKD black belts that have a particular set of offense and defense strategies that they stick with and stop evolving as a martial artist. Color belts continue to adept and grow at a much higher rate because black belts often become complacent. I say that unfortunately knowing I am one of those black belts who has gotten complacent. That's why I like to spar with aspiring color belts. They push me the hardest to continue improving.
I see your point. In karate it was the same way. Keep in mind that BJJ black belt do have a theoretical knowledge of the art. It usually takes about 10 to 12 years to earn it. On the contrary, in Judo, it takes an average of 3 to 4 years to black belt. That's not to say all BJJ black belts should teach (some suck at it) just that they have a huge amount of knowledge. And it's not saying they should DO more, but ATTEND more so they can continue to learn. Have a good one!
People talk about money like they are buying tools you want a good tool that will do the job and that will last but u don't want to pay extra so u buy the cheaper one that will do half the job and last half the lifetime. We all heard u get what u pay for but I'm not just saying that BJJ is an investment in you and ur journey either to learn how to defend yourself, lose weight or to be a competitor. In this case should college be free? I don't want to pay for college but would love a degree.
I learn stuff in a regular class too and it's not extra money. If it's a big name that I really want to meet, then yeah I'll go but beyond that it's usually not worth the money. Especially when they spend a good amount of the time talking to make the seminar seem longer. I can listen to that on youtube.
My memory sucks so i usually forget most of what was taught at the seminar within a few days. On the other hand i can keep watching youtube videos over and over until my big dumb brain manages to absorb the information.
I think you have a lot to learn about bjj if that is what you think the case is. Go do some research on it and you'll find out how hard it is to get belts in bjj without some serious dedication. I also suggest you go to a local bjj school and see for yourself, you might actually enjoy it too!
I work at the state tax office, so sure. But technically, your taxes paid for it...But the people that would go to a seminar probably already pay to train at a school so it's hard to justify paying $60-80 for a seminar when you already are learning technique everyday in class. I've been to a Cobrinha/Jacare seminar and a Relson Gracie seminar and I can't say I learned that much more from those than I do in a regular class. Don't get me wrong it was cool to learn from them but pricey.
Black belt doesn't mean anything. You can't fight just because you have a black belt. It's all a scam. You can get it in six months if you just pay enough money. A friend of mine did and he doesn't know anything really. Just memorizing moves. Do people honestly believe that all those movie stars with black belts can fight? They just pay for it
They should go, so con artists who call themselves "master," and "professor," can rip them off. I'd rather watch a video--I get WAY more from a video that I can digest and study as much as needed. Seminars are like college lectures, a bull shit rip off.
That's ok spend ur money at the bar make sure u have unlimited internet and text messaging buy a flatscreen 3D tv I'm sure all those things will save your life when you are at your weakest

excellent point! When achieving my black belt my Sensei told me, now you are a advanced beginner.. never stop learning...
It is very true, you do process moves faster the more experience you have.

I went to a Shawn Hammonds seminar yesterday in Owensboro, KY. It was awesome!

My comment about Renato Laranja was removed. Don't make me sick the 27 time mundial champion on you guys

I'm sure they do, but my point was that is one reason more people don't go.

I don't have the money or time for seminars which is why I subscribe to Submissions101
Once you think you know something, that's when you stop trying to learn

karate bullshit. or some watered down mcdojo. Not in BJJ buddy.
i dont understand why james shaved his epic beard off smh -_-
Make seminars free and I'm sure people would go more often.
LOL! Six months for a BJJ black belt!? I'd be suspicious of someone who got it in six years!
