TLDR: Lego Mario has a bunch of technology crammed inside, including a single, mostly masked screen that makes the 2DS look efficient. The "Cursed" Lego Mario has quite a bit of electronics inside. I thought that there were four screens, but the eyes, mouth and chest displays are one screen, with most of it masked out by the plastic casing(quite a waste of display space). There is a speaker for the sound effects, a color sensor for some interactions, a wireless receiver for updates, and a CPU to control the whole thing, in addition to the batteries. Given all the electronics inside a relatively small space, I would forgive having the batteries going in the same direction if they're wired in parallel. I am shocked by the high pixel density and pixel count of modern displays, especially if the display used in the Lego Mario figure is stock. If that display _is_ stock, it would explain why everything turns black. Bistable LCD's exist, but I do not know how fast they can change state, nor how small the pixels can be. If that was used(perhaps with a color filter), one could set the pixels properly before turning off so it looks like Mario is asleep, or just a neutral expression.
