      That's not true though. There's plenty that is not in Black's color pie, even if you pay life/sacrifice other resources. R&D literally added enchantment removal to it's color pie 5 years ago, with the caveat that it's suppose to be worse on rate compared to Green and White.

      @@Mordalon Stop making disingenuous arguments. You can disagree without willfully misunderstanding others.
      It is well-known that popular fantasy derives from a "sword and sorcery" style of world akin to Tolkien's Middle Earth. Magic is no exception. Although some early cards, namely the Phyrexians, venture more into science fiction territory, Magic as a whole has always been a traditional sword and sorcery fantasy property. Garfield himself originally conceived of Magic as a mini-game to be played alongside Dungeons & Dragons, which is itself a traditional sword and sorcery property. Even when Magic has ventured into more technologically-advanced settings, such as Ravnica, it has always been with explicitly magical underpinnings; for example, guns are magically-fueled lasers, and electricity is substituted for magically-themed substances such as Aether, or more generically, raw lightning.
      Magic's shift toward allowing more contemporary aesthetics is very recent (~5 years) and is the result of R&D needing to constantly push out new sets, combined with the contracts for Universes Beyond introducing other properties such as The Walking Dead into Magic. Officially, this represents an ideological movement toward seeing Magic as a "game system" (i.e. a set of mechanics) rather than a unique, sword and sorcery fantasy IP of its own. As a consequence, we now have baseball bats, television screens, etc.
      Whether or not you like this, or are comfortable with this, is up to you. But it's completely reasonable for others not to be. The traditional fantasy aesthetic has been linked to Magic for over 20 years. The name of the game is, itself, "Magic." To add elements from outside this traditional aesthetic, such as baseball bats and television screens, would be akin to playing Call of Duty and seeing wizards run around casting spells, or playing Red Dead Redemption and watching a tank roll across the desert. The fundamental nature of the property has been altered.

    @1:17:50 that's almost exactly what WOTC has said about the matter - they observed that it was weird having three colors that could destroy artifacts unconditionally (white, green, red) but only two with targeted enchantment removal (white, green) was a bit lopsided.
    They didn't want to give it to red as well, and blue generally doesn't do "destroy" so it went to black with the caveat that it should be worse than white and green. They've been doing it since ZNR (Feed the Swarm) but this is probably the best version of the effect. They've had at least one very bad targeted enchantment destruction in WOE (Shatter the Oath) but Withering Torment might actually see play outside of draft filler.

      The grammar on Shroudstomper is incorrect.
      The way it’s currently written means “each opponent loses 2 life” is a triggered ability, while “You gain 2 life and draw a card” is maybe a static ability…or nothing.
      Either way, there are thousands of cards that set a precedent on how to read these actions, and zero that are written like Shroudstomper. The period isn’t just weird or incorrect, it completely changes the meaning and ruling on what the card does.

      If we are following the guidelines of standard English, and also using the precedent set by thousands of previous mtg cards, then “You gain 2 life and draw a card” is a static ability. Now, that doesn’t make sense to have it as a static ability, but if you are “always” drawing and gaining, I think it’s reasonable to say that the ruling should be to gain infinite life and draw infinite cards and lose the game as soon as Shroudstomper is on the battlefield.

      If it were after a colon for an activated ability, then yes, you do all the things. Like when Tyvar the Pummeler says “Tap an untapped creature you control: Tyvar gains indestructible until end of turn. Tap it,” that works because you do everything g after the colon, and the “it” refers to the previous sentence.
      Or Shroudstomper could have a keyword like survival and say, “Survival. Each opponent loses 2 life. You gain 2 life and draw a card.”
      Those would be correct, but the current grammar is not correct…and I can’t find another Magic card that is written like Shroudstomper.

      Green does not literally do everything, never has. People who say this just show they don't actually know what the color pie is, or mainly play Commander and only value the grindy value stuff that Green has always excelled at. For example, all you listed was Big creatures, removal, and card advantage, when the Color Pie encompasses so many other effects that interact with many other facets of the game. Green isn't getting hitting the opponent's hand, countering spells, or hitting their life points directly, for instance. Green also doesn't stealing/copying any of the opponent's stuff like the Grixis colors can.
      "basically" hard removal isn't hard removal, and it's not like it's a given that Green has the biggest creature out at any given time. Size doesn't win everything, especially when every color has extremely cheap creature interaction. Every color gets card advantage, which isn't just card draw. They gave Black enchantment removal to balance out the number of colors that can destroy Artifacts and Enchantments, not because Black specifically was lacking in powerful effects.

    Firstly: Oblivious Bookworm is the _best card in the entire set,_ and I don't think it's even close. I can't think of a single card to pick over it. It demands that your opponent exiles it, and even then you've forced them to use premium removal.
    Early game, or late game; behind, at parity, or ahead, it is always relevant.
    And it's not even a bomb, it's just sheer value, haha
    Anyway, having played the set now... It's actually _really fun._
    I'm not a fan of the new way Play Boosters have affected Limited, ESPECIALLY SEALED-Bloomburrow unfortunately suffered the most from this-but Duskmourn honestly feels extremely balanced.
    I went undefeated in the prerelease with an abomination of a deck that had zero bombs and almost no removal. I had to go into five colors to have enough playables, and had no archetype. 😂
    ... yet, it beat out decks that had multiple huge mythics. The matches were dang close, but it still did really well.
    I leaned hard into focusing on a U/G tempo deck, and it was surprisingly consistent. I had only two rares-Screaming Nemesis and Valvagoth's Lair.
    My MVPs were 2 x Conductive Machete, 2 x Overgrown Zealot, and an Oblivious Bookworm.
    So... Yeah. I love, love, love this set.

    • @Mordalon
      @Mordalon 4 месяца назад

      A cards make you want to drop what you are doing to fit into your deck, and nearly win you the game when cast. an efficient body that surveils but requires 2 different colors is good but not A level. And the fliers require 4 more mana, so saying "just a 2 drop" is misleading, and getting that high on Delirium is possible but you have to go out of your way to make that happen reasonably often.

    • @LunaLasceria
      @LunaLasceria 4 месяца назад +2

      Well, it's not QUITE that simple -- when they first introduced Black enchantment removal (e.g. Feed The Swarm) they made a big deal out of only allowing Black to remove enchantments that an OPPONENT controls, because Black has historically had "deal with the devil" type enchantments with massive potential downsides (e.g. Demonic Pact) that they didn't want you getting out of that easily. It wasn't until WOE's Shatter the Pact and now DSK's much more efficient Withering Torment that Black has been allowed to directly kill its own enchantments, because they don't make many "deal with the devil" enchantments these days and the restriction just wasn't relevant enough to be worth it.
      That said, LSV's take here is spot on; the Color Pie is not (and should not be) set in stone -- CHANGING the Color Pie is not the same thing as BREAKING the Color Pie. I'm 100% in favor of Black getting enchantment removal, and the vast majority of people that I've seen complaining about it don't really have an argument against it besides tradition and it "feeling weird".

      ONE was horrendous flanderization meets saturday morning cartoons yeah. Compared to the art from the Scars block, it's just depressing.
      I think some people don't really care about anything but the game's mechanics, and for some people their line between kitsch and crap is more forgiving, so some people liking this aesthetic is whatever.
      But I notice for a lot of people it's this weird thing of "magic is literally my identity and if anyone dislikes any aspect of it, they are personally insulting me."
      It persists exactly until it becomes "cool" to say a set's aesthetic is vapid, as people now broadly agree for MKM and OTJ. God help you if you said "this is the most phoned-in western setting I've ever seen" prior to the release of MH3, though.

      ONE was really strange for me. Although I must say if they really wanted to push that phyrexian theme, they kind of did a pretty good job.
      That is true and I seem to pick up on that even with other content creators: a "cool set" to them means the mechanics, they do not care much for the art, theme. I am still not 100% sure which one is more important to me, but I have the feeling that if the art is bad, I am simply not able to enjoy the set.
      True. With some people, you cannont criticize those things. I had a cooment about OTJ (mechanics/vibe-wise) and someone wanted to support it 100%. Okay, fine I get it some people really liked the set, but to me, it was super boring - the art, the sound of plotting, the mechanics.
      I'm curious - did you not like MKM and OTJ for its art/them or also for their mechanics? Because I must admit, I was quite surprised by the critique of those sets (especially MKM which I found quite nice) as of late.

    • @bartoffer
      @bartoffer 4 месяца назад +2

      My issues with them are mostly aesthetic, in the sense of wasted potential. When I think of "plane-hopping detective noire," MKM was not what came to mind. My mind sprang to setting up a buddy-cop with a character from Ravnica and one from Capenna, and hopping back-and-forth to unveil a goofy conspiracy that would tie into the next set. With OTJ, I imagined taking fantasy themes into a western setting, and exploring how magic would function differently, what kinds of weapons would emerge, different fantasy races adapting to the environs, etc. "Everyone has a bowler and a trenchcoat" and "everyone has a cowboy hat and a... crossbow?" being the main "flavor" was not how I envisioned them.
      The mechanics were mostly fine and functional, but the template era of design hasn't had any truly unplayable sets. Even ONE was functional, just boring.

Referencing horror movies and books that were made before I was born gels a lot better with a fantasy tcg than movie franchises that are still getting sequels and reboots right now, for the most part. The movie reference that irks me most is Gremlins; couldn’t they at least have used a similar type that already has a presence in MtG? Imps maybe, or something sillier like Ouphes? Oh well, it’s hard to tell if I’m getting into grumpy old man territory at this point. I’ll probably try a few drafts to see how it plays, but I’m not very excited.
