Urghh.... Finally. I've been waiting for this impatiently. The set review shows are like a celebration of the new draft season. Plus I've come up with a cheat code to make them more accurate since Marshall and Luis will always be Marshall and Luis. Blue commons that get a C+/B- are actually a C and red/white uncommons that get a C are actually a B in aggressive decks, which are the only decks you'll play them anyway, so basically just a B.
Dear Marshal , Luis , I love your show. been listening since John Lauks time. My love for MTG has been on and off but keep in touch for the most part. I just want to thank you as you've always been an integral part whenever I return to the game here and there I always visit your podcast (now youtube channel). Thank you so much - many years have passed but you're still there *salute*
2:29:35 I feel like you may be underestimating how much less of a cost "Craft with Creature" is vs "Craft with Artifact" - You don't need to 'self mill' creatures. your creatures are gonna die from regular play, unlike noncreature artifacts which usually just stick around. This turns a resource that you usually can't do much with (ie dead 2-drops) into something you can spend
"Left to the own devices, gnomes reengineer their own devices" Is genius flavourtext. By using the word "devices" twice there is a meta reference to how the gnomes re-engineer themselves.
The real neat trick with soulcoil Viper is when you play it on 3 with an empty yard (or at least, nothing worth bringing back), then on 4 you cycle one of the landcyclers, make your land drop for the turn, and pop it into play.
Opened a Zoetic Glyph blue uncommon and I would have never seen that card as worthwhile unless I watched this LR episode. Thanks you the guys for the insight I missed!
Am I the only one who can barely tell the difference between the uncommon and common symbols this set? This isn't an LR problem, even on Scryfall I have to double-check.
@@Prograde Just look at the bottom left of the card, easy to read letters from C for common to M for mythic. Some set symbols sometimes just dont look as clean, thats how it has always been. But apparently its the end of the game for some newer players who might think the symbols are meant to convey info instead of being cute, flavorful reminders for the set.
UG! Perfect fit. Welcome aboard, and another quality podcast for Ult to sponsor. i appreciate the awesome effort on pronunciations, as it helps me to focus on the game instead of tangents.
Some time ago you guys started doing the review in mana cost order instead of alphabetical. I think it would be good if you reflected on that after going through each colour, commenting whether a colour looks more or less aggressive for the set, whether a colour's early drops will be more fought over than normal, whether a colour wants ramp cards - do something with the extra information gained by reviewing in the order you do.
I love a good set review! It would be helpful if when reviewing DFCs you could have both faces up at once or alternate between faces during the discussion, I keep missing the front face.
Being able to craft with something from under Petrify is less of an issue when comparing it to other removal spells, because they could have just used the thing to craft with while it was in their graveyard anyway. So it's only a downside compared to either exiling removal spells, or a removal spell plus graveyard hate.
One thing about cards the big clunky discover cards like Walk with the Ancestors. They get a lot better in a deck with lot of explore. Since sometimes you will be able to wait a bit and go for them when they give you good value. Probably doesn’t change their rating but gives them a slight edge.
Happy about the new sponsor. I don't even like Katanas but I love UG's other products and I think they're easily the most innovative of the big brands right now.
During the pre-release at my LGS, I got 2 Deep Goblin Skulltakers up to 9/9s, and had a third in my deck. Those cards are so good if you’ve got the right shell.
Cartographer's Companion reminds me of Searchlight Companion from Kamigawa Neon Dynasty. Somewhat unassuming card that ended up being taken highly and in almost every deck complete bombin common for so many reasons.
1:58:00 As a note, I actually don't think you can respond to a craft ability. The cards are exiled as part of the cost to craft, so it's a little more evasive than transform. But the backside of the cards are fair game when they enter.
I dunno I like Deconstruction Hammer. It's also an artifact so it counts as a permanent for descend and it triggers artifact related things. And at the low equip cost its easy to juggle around between creatures. I'd say it's a C even before sideboard.
The funny thing is, Blue has had this off-and-on for decades now. They just can't seem to make up their mind. I hope they keep it in blue going forward.
Sorcerer's Spyglass seems sideboard playable at least in this set specifically, there are a decent number of cards in the set whose value is only or predominantly activated abilities. Sunbird Effigy has won me a sealed game as a 3/3 flyer, though you probably don't want to end up in the deck that wants it in draft unless you're in Caves I guess.
Maaaan, it's so nice and funny seeing them both hyping the cards and themselves up after the tragedy that was "Wilds of Eldraine". Can't say I'm not getting hyped as well by these cards!
Do you guys think you factored a higher avg land count from explore in your evaluation of some of the more expensive cards? Imo, it softens the otherwise sharp difference between 6 and 7 drops.
If someone Abrades an Artifact that you are attempting to craft, does it effectively counter the transformation? Is the card crafted 'with' still exiled??
The craft ability's cost is the mana + exile x artifacts to activate. The artifact is therefore exiled before the opponent has priority i.e. is able to respond to the ability after the costs have been paid. Since all the craft cards I have seen so far are sorcery speed only, the opponent would still be able to abrade an artifact before the active player has a chance to activate it, but not afterwards.
Scampering Surveyor seems nice. It's comparable to sad robot. You get an extra power (for nicer trades), you get the ability to grab caves, and you give up the card-draw when it dies. I think you should rarely cut this.
For Guardian of the Great Door being discovered, you can also opt to put it in your hand instead of casting the discovered card... This is true for all discoveries as well, so them being influenced by this shouldn't matter for the rating of the card.
Sleeping hard on Hotfoot Gnome here! Often gets in for 3, wears equipment oh so well, great with combat tricks [the first strike on especially], nice for crafting with later and gives your big creatures haste. Kinda checks all the boxes. Unlikely to want multiples, definitely not more than 2, but 1 can be an allllll-star Edit- He also triggers descend well, is a permanent for descend AND pretty easy artifact to tap for those abilities too. Aside from explore and the gw mechanic, it kinda just plays well with every mechanic of the set?
i died to consuming sepulcher on arena. I was at 1 life and they crafted it. it was like an unstoppable slow moving train and i was stuck on the tracks
I know you guys called WOE a bad set, but my top pick is this one. Drafted 3 times already since release in different colour combinations and never doing well and I am a good limited player. This may be the first set I stop drafting before the next set release.
I think Master's Guide-Mural and craft cards in general will be a major litmus test for the speed of this set, If this set is hyper aggro then craft will be bad if this set defaults to long value slogs then the inherent 2 cards in one nature of craft cards will be strong and in the middle you have them be interesting build around cards with a requirement of slowing the game down for their pay-offs. The entire mechanic is so dependent on the speed of the format as context on how much the back side of the card is worth that without that knowledge I think that craft will be the nexus of the many early mis-evaluations in the format. Edit: descend and fathomless descent are also very context and time dependent mechanics that need the set up to do their thing, aren't they? wow most of the new mechanics in this set are super dependent on the speed of this format, this makes me hope that LCI is somewhat slow or a LOT of the color pairs are not going to be able to work
4:09:29 You can cast this on turn 2 or 3, then discover 5 on turn 4. Just sac this for mana, then use the mana for its graveyard ability. And you can do it on your opponent's turn. That seems decent.
One of the huge overarching questions of this set is: Are instants and sorceries just bad here? Like, the very best ones are good, of course. But I think non-permanent spells need to be auto-deducted at least half a grade from where that card would normally grade. Plus, the colors that play the most spells (blue, black) are the ones that want spells the LEAST in this set.
I learned my lesson from the Lotr format :D everything that looks really cool but requires to sit ont he battlefield while you play other cards to eventually do something cool is getting a grade down.
I feel like they're under valuing the blue "Ancestral Reminiscence" draw 3 cards then discard a card, as well as the "promising vein" cave. Both cards are pretty low quality and don't affect the board, but they'd be C's in the Descend decks and cave decks. Because you'll be getting another permanent card into the yard if you discard one, and then the cave will also help to trigger spells that care about caves in the yard. Also if you have some creatures in play that care about descend, and you're not quite at descend 4, then these cards would help you hit that mark plus set you ahead card advantage wise or color fixing wise.
Very nice review, thanks. But, for a lot of the cards you didn't specify a grade in the end. You were talking about it, but then forgot to mention the grade and moved on. It would be nicer to mention the grade for each card and, even better, to show the grade beside the card in the video. :)
