  • Art of the box - The best video game cover art
"Before the days of brand awareness campaigns and digital marketing, a game’s only source of advertising was often limited to the box artwork you’d see on high street shelves. With early game graphics offering little visual interest, it fell to the packaging to conjure up engaging images of deep space battles, medieval knights and wizards, explosive military operations, and monstrous alien creatures. And every cover had to be hand-crafted by an artist using traditional media - often with a short deadline and the vaguest of briefs. The Art Of The Box features 26 biographies of those artists who, at some point in their careers, found themselves illustrating video game packaging, including Bob Wakelin, Steve Hendricks, Ken Macklin, Tom DuBois, Steinar Lund, Marc Ericksen, Julie Bell and Susumu Matsushita among many others. With information drawn from live interviews wherever possible, we discuss their beginnings as an artist, their inspirations and influences, the games they illustrated, and where their artistic careers have taken them. Some artists created just a handful of covers over a short period; others were instrumental in developing the look and feel of video game brands, such as Ocean Software, Konami and Capcom. But all have their left an indelible mark on the industry, with sumptuous pieces of original art, many of which now command high prices on the collectors’ market. With artists from the UK, Europe, North American and Japan, The Art Of The Box encompasses the full gamut of game packaging illustration, from the early days of Atari’s iconic VCS box art, to modern-day collaborations between designers, CG artists and game developers for the latest AAA games. Each biography is accompanied by lavish, full-colour box artwork, supplied by the artists themselves, and each piece is presented without the usual logos and retail elements, so you see each piece as the artist intended."--Provided by publisher.

You took me way back with that Karnov footage. That art is pretty amazing. I was always terrible at Karnov but i loved the secretive nature of the things you could get and find. To this day ive never beaten Karnov. If I remember correctly, the box art on the back for this game had a picture of a level that was actually deleted from the game and was never put in it. The arcade machine was solid too from what i remember but im not sure how different it is to the NES version after all this time. Congratulations! The End

Awesome book, as everything published by Bitmap Books. I'll get one soon, since I just got "From Ants to Zombies" which is awesome as well. I love all these artists that you've shown. One of my all time favorite game box covers was for "Transartica" game by Rodney Matthews. Roger Dean did some cool artworks for Psygnosys as well. I absolutely adore 70's and 80's fantasy and sci fi art.
Oh, and Conan the Barbarian is awesome, one of the best soundtracks ever created. Beast Master is awesome as well and so is Krull

I'm definitely getting this book. Frank Cirrocco is my favorite illustrator. I grew up LOVING his videogame box and cabinet artwork. He's the reason I wanted to be an artist. I absolutely love his style.
I have a signed ad flyer with the Genesis cover art he did for Final Zone.

Awesome review! Cant go wrong with with Bitmap Books. But to answer your question, there's so many good box arts out there. Ninja Gaiden II is currently in my NES. The Dragon art is super cool. The secret of evermore on Super NES also rings a bell. Seeing that huge bug monster with the little boy and his dog.

Awesome book! And yes, Sega should bring back eternal champions, or any fighting game for that matter. Sega used to put out a lot of good fighting games.
