- Опубликовано: 5 окт 2024
- To Hell and Back is about Audie Murphy (1925--1971), the most decorated American soldier in the entire Second World War. In 1942 he falsified his age to 18 to join the Army and until 1945 he participated in battles on Sicily, at Salerno, Anzio and Rome, and also in southern France and the Alsace region.
After the war he suffered from posttraumatic stress disorder ("shell shock") and as one of the first he took a stand for war veterans with such psychological disorders.
In 1949 he wrote his autobiography "To Hell And Back" which was filmed in 1955 with Murphy playing himself. Over the next two decades he played in 44 movies. In 1971 he died in a plane crash, in the only 46 years of his life he was awarded with 33 medals, including the Medal of Honor and three Purple Hearts.
CAUTION!
I won't tolerate any racist, discriminatory or in any other form inappropriate comments! This song neither glorifies war, nor National Socialism, but should be considered as a historical work.
"No, we don't glorify anything, we just tell stories about things that have happened." (Rikard Sundén, founding member of Sabaton)

The whistles make it so much better
It makes it sound like the tune is something Audie would whistle to occupy himself.
I was literally whistling the beginning of this, accidentally scrolled down, saw this, and couldn't agree more.
I love the whistling when I first found Sabaton I wouldn't expect that but its pretty awesome

Sabaton really is the whole package:
1) Teaches you history like no other teacher.
2) Their music gives you courage like no other - giving you will power.
3) Perfect workout music - thus making you stronger physically as well.
PS: Once nearly got a heart attack while running and listening to their music... Real story. You just cant stop running after you hear "Then the winged hussars arrived", realise what a men they must have been and how strong they must have been, because you just want to be as strong and courages as they were... Am I the only one?
Once i was sick and layed on the bed i played sabaton and i stand up

Just putting that out there.
Captain America says his nightly prayers to Audie Murphy.
Louis Colville Really?
Steve Rogers wishes he could be as badass as Audie Murphy
Louis Colville Audie Murphy is practically the real life captain america. Love both.
I am pretty sure Cap was inspired from this man.
Cap's story to a point really does mirror Audie Murpy's. He tried to get into multiple branches of the military several times while lying about his age, until the Army took him - he had trouble because he was short. He became the most decorated solider in American history. When Hollywood made a movie about him, starring him, they decided to tone it down because they didn't think audiences would believe it.
I'm from Russia and I know regrettably little about American history.
I've learned about story of Audie Murphy because of this awesome Sabaton song!
Impressed, truly impressed! He was literally The Real Captain America - without any super-soldier serum or vibranium shield. He's a real life hero and I truly respect him now when I know about his feats.
Glory and honor to Audie Murphy and all heroes of Allied Forces who fought against Nazis in WWII!
Best wishes from Russia to America - our stalwart ally in that war against Axis and to Sweden and Sabaton for this song! And, of course, to Piscator for making an awesome lyrics video.

He was the British version of Rambo who during WW2 was famous for charging into battle with a Scottish Bastard sword and bagpipes. He was also the only British soldier to get a confirmed kill on a German soldier in ww2 with a longbow. Later after doing a tour of just about every war front at the time he famously said with regards to America dropping the atomic bomb on Japan;
"If those damn Yanks hadn't dropped the bomb, the war could of gone on for another 10 years."
As an American, it upsets me greatly that I didn't know about Audie Murphy. The man is a hero, in war and outside of it.
He use to be in the high school history books believe it or not, but they've deleted him out of them. I don't understand why. Our young people need real hero's to look up to.
You are absolutely correct, Vivi. Sadly too many Americans have forgotten about Audie Murphy.
The army base where I did bct literally had an Audie Murphy fan club.
There were heroes of this caliber on every front and in every service. To go over all of them properly would take a full year of classes.
@@tremedar yeah, thats the saddest thing about teaching. The fact you have so much stuff to cover, and barely any time to do so.
My Grandfather served with the British Army during the Second Battle for El Alamein. He told me this "I went into Hell, brought a Postcard and came back on the train" shows how amazing these people, like Audie Murphy, are. They went through absolute hell and horror and pretty much dusted themselves off and carried on about their normal lives after the war. I would never have the balls like Audie or my Grandfather. XD

Why is it that the most simple folk make such forces of nature? Audie Murphy was a farmer & Simo Häyhä was a farmer. Also Sabaton in my opinion, is like a bard, tells stories in the form of a song only way more epic.
I agree on the bard part. I think I like them them most because of that.
My guess is that simple folk just have that "you gatta do what you gatta do." type of attitude.

The best part about the movie To Hell and Back, Audie Murphy fired the lead actor and director because he thought they were too stupid to make the movie correctly, so he took over the jobs. And, because of how amazing his story is, he actually rewrote the movie to be more believable, thinking no one would possibly believe what actually happened.
Shows that Hollywood has no respect for true stories :)

It's because Reality is Unrealistic.
Soldiers like Audie Murphy and Simo Häyhä? Fictional characters need superhuman powers to do what they did.

Some of the greatest die in the most mundane of ways. Patton, one of our generals in WW2, died of a car crash almost right after the war ended.
Or like General Walter Wenck of the 12th Army, who died in a car crash in 1982.
as same as German Ace Pilot Gerhard Barkhorn, survive over one thousands mission during WW2, but die in a car crash (his rank when retire is Major General).
I once heard of a man who survived by fleeing over a road.
After the war, he went back to the road with his family.
A car drove into him and he died.
(Take this with a grain of salt since it was a while since I heard it and I don't know the name nor the place of the accident.)

I feel ya, high school sucked ass.
I feel ya. Highschool is horrible and I think that's a reasom why I'm thankful that it's the worst thing most teenagers like me face daily. At 17 Audie Murphy had to the hell that is war. He had to face artillery shells, lead bullets, and seeing his friends die around him. That fucked him up.
I'm glad you can get some personal meaning out of a great song, and I don't want to scare you away from the band, but I feel like comparing the carnage and suffering of war to your experience in high school is kind of disrespectful. I don't want to be an ass about this, but it really seems disrespectful of the suffering they had to endure for their country. A true American hero.
This hits hard, especially on Memorial Day. Mad respect to vets and everyone who played a role, big or small, in the military.
I just realized how poetic this song is. Parts of this song is taken from Audie Murphy's "The Crosses Grow On Anzio," which is a line of the song. Within the poem are other lines of the song. Lines that sounded nice and made sense have a deeper meaning than they had on the surface. I always thought that Audie Murphy was just an effective killing machine, but he was also a poet and Sabaton used his poems to create a song honoring a great man.

My father in law was part of the British / Canadian army that landed in Sicily in ‘43 and fought their way northward while the Americans landed near Anzio. He was involved in heavy combat and street by street fighting at Monte Cassino and later at Ortona. He saw many of his friends and fellow soldiers die but survived himself, but was never the same. He died in 1977 an alcoholic with severe PTSD, although the term didn’t exist back then. We owe our respect and admiration to ALL the soldiers involved in that Italian campaign.
Much respect to him, from across the pond. The greatest generation!
This song is a true piece of art - thanks so much for uploading this video! Your lyric video are the best there are.
"Who went to Hell and came back?"
Doom Slayer: What are you looking at?
Lol
I asked my grandfather who served in the Marines & Air Force if he suffered from PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) & he told me he didn’t but that doesn’t mean he wasn’t scared.
But he also told me that it’s a disorder that SHOULD be taken seriously & that there are others who are as he would put it phonies who are trying to get attention or something. But say this to any living war vets you know who are suffering from PTSD: If Audie Murphy can push through this hell so can you.
Towards the end of his life, Audie was openly speaking of PTSD (which so many still called shell shocked). Had he lived, PTSD would have been acknowledged and treated long before it finally was.
Back then they didn't have keyboards and pc's, so the warriors had to go bash people in the face with guns instead.

Social Justice Gestapo fits the reality of the movement all too well. Frankly they are a buch of narcissistic anti-semitistic spoiled brats with delusions of grandeur.

XD the backgrounds are all from the movie "To Hell and Back" about the same guy
+Dominique Martinez Yes, and Audie played himself in that movie.
+InvictusByzantium The amazing thing is, that movie actually DOWNPLAYED Audie Murphy's achievements; the man did so many balls-out crazy-awesome things that the film makers cut some out, otherwise they'd be criticized for making stuff up.
David Abramczyk yep.... I don't doubt it. lol #GOTEXAS
You don't say, Dominique Martinez?
David Abramczyk Actually i'm sure they downplayed it at Audie's behest. If i recall Audie really wasn't up to doing the movie as he still suffered from PTSD and the guilt of his role in the war. He'd actually watch films of German orphans in a cleared movie theater. So seeing how much of a wreck he was, a good friend who happened to be in the film business talked him into doing the movie. A LOT of convincing was involved, so i am sure to keep Audie in the movie they probably toned it all down as to not give Audie any mental anxiety or flashbacks. He was a hell of a man, but in the end heroes...are only human..

My first and favourite sabaton song
Sabaton feels like they are modern bards, singing songs of battles, acts of heroism and wars, and keeping it either awe-inspiring or awfully terrifying depending on the person. All in all, whatever they do is decent at its worst and spine-tingling feels inducing at best.
The baddest man that ever lived was a 110 lbs dirt poor country teenager that grew up shooting squirrels for food during the great depression and was rejected multiple times by multiple service branches before being admitted to the army and becoming one of the greatest war heroes in history.
Let us remember those that have perished in battle. Whatever language they spoke or uniform they wore. Most, if not all of them were regular people that were pushed into battle by those in power.
Many of them did unspeakably brutal things, in order to ensure their own survival and to protect their brothers in arms.
My great-granddad's older brother was a cavalryman, after German HMG's wiped out the Belgian cavalry he retreated with the others and became a Machinegunner. After Belgium received their Lewis machineguns he used one of those to provide walking fire for his comrades while crossing the trenches.
He died later on when he was supposed to be on leave, he stayed in the trenches to assist his fellow machinegunner. When they got overrun by the Germans during a raid, he crawled back through a 20" deep ditch to grab a crate of ammo drums for the Lewis gun.
Then a mortar shell found him. He was aided later on by a medical officer. But he died bcs of the injuries sustained by shrapnel.
He was a nameless unknown person, but we got the info bcs of the anecdotes of the Medical officer. Who wrote down the story told by his fellow gunner, who survived the raid. My grandma got hold of the records a few years ago.
My other grandma's father fought on the beaches of Dunkirk, my granddad served with our Para-bataljons as well.
My gf's granddad was a Royal Marine Commando, he jumped out of the boat at the beaches. He survived the fighting and settled in Liege in Belgium.
These men were hard men, tough men, who surrendered everything in order to make sure we would have what we have today. Their sacrifice should never be forgotten! They should be honored and remembered so we wouldn't make the same mistakes anymore.
Claudy Focan my great grandpa was a soldier in the US ARMY During WWII and landed on Omaha beach and lived we used to have pictures of him escorting German pow’s but unfortunately they got lost through time I would love to have those pictures. My great uncle Casper was a willies Jeep driver in Europe for the US ARMY not much more is known about his service he came home shell shocked now known as PTSD. He never talked about the war. The service men and woman of that time area special breed of human.

Doom guy in a nutshell
I listened to this song for the first time today. I was sent a video of myself that a friend took while this song came on. When the video zoomed in on me the guitar came in. I just now listened to the whole song and the irony is I’m a short wild man from Texas that certainly hides his emotions.
"Actual combat experience is the only teacher. You never come out of a skirmish without having picked up a couple of new tricks; without having learned more about your enemy...Total involvement with the war was the only thing that kept me alive and pushing." - Audie Murphy

Audie Murphy was the most decorated soldier in U.S history, receiving every single award you can receive in the army
I love that you put a clip from the movie in the video. Especially since that's actually Audie Murphy in the movie.

"Dead men will never come back"
Me after listening to Attack of the Dead Men:
So that was a fucking lie.
"let them fall face down, if they must die, making it easier to say goodbye" that one lyric sends chill down my spine and highlights the horrors of war, your friends will die but the war deems you must move on and make your peace you must say goodbye and not seeing their face makes that easier, war is a truly horrible thing and i thank sabaton for singing about it and both highlighting the good and bad sides.
Knew it was a matter of time before Piscator made this, keep up the good work!
This man lied about his age, fought in hell and came back during the European Campaigns, battled and conquered a sleeping pill addiction, and was a great actor, before dying in a plane crash.
Most decorated soldier in US Military History.
Fuckin awesome
Edit: typos
He protecc.
He attacc.
But most importantly,
He charge and attacc, he went to hell and bacc.

IgnarHusky666 Is that a reference to something or did you come up with it?
Soviet Union made it up
One of the best reaction comments I've read.
THE WHISTLE AT THE BEGINNING THOUGH
The 3rd Infantry Division really is the most underrated US unit of WWII given how many battles it fought, how many MOH recipients it had, and how many unit citations it received. As great a man as Audie Murphy was, it's a shame he's the only Soldier the division is known for.
Sabaton: Let's make a song about this guy i think it'd be cool.
Texans: Yehaaw!
I like this

THE CROSSES GROW ON ANZIO
Oh, gather 'round me, comrades; and
listen while I speak
Of a war, a war, a war where hell is
six feet deep.
Along the shore, the cannons roar. Oh
how can a soldier sleep?
The going's slow on Anzio. And hell is
six feet deep.
Praise be to God for this captured sod that
rich with blood does seep.
With yours and mine, like butchered
swine's; and hell is six feet deep.
That death awaits there's no debate;
no triumph will we reap.
The crosses grow on Anzio, where hell is
six feet deep.
-Audie Murphy, 1948
I'm rather proud that I knew who this was about just from the first few lines, without reading the description or comments.
0:01 - 0:12 i swear is part of an old movie tune i believe iv heard it at least or deja vu
I'm pretty sure its a twist of a tune that was in one of his movies.
