🤣 I was the same I was like if neither Treacle or Oh William win, it'll be satisfying for me haha
Yeah, I don't think I would have read the Booker again if Treacle Walker won and Oh William should never have been nominated, I'm really anti series in book prizes.
Bummed it wasn't Glory or Trees, but this one sounds good too!
Yeah, I think those 3 books are all similar styles, they're all political, they're all funny, they all go dark places.
I’m very happy with this winner! It’s the only one I could see as a winner from reading the shortlist. Though I’m still bitter about Maps not getting onto the shortlist 😡
Maps missing the shortlist might be this year's biggest shock, I'm still sore.
I am so pleased that the Seven Moons won!! 🎉
It's nice to have a book highlighting Sri Lanka get some hype.
I loved this book to pieces! It’s surely one of my favorite books of the year.
I couldn’t get through Glory. It kept circling and I had to put it down.
I'm not surprised you enjoyed this, it's definately got that funny speculative thing you like.
I plan to give it another shot on audiobook when that comes out in December. Glory might actually be slower paced, but because I read quicker on audio I didn't notice as much.
Still miffed it wasn't maps of our spectacular bodies (because I'm sour and know how to hold a grudge) but I like the sound of this winner. I haven't read any of the shortlisted books so my opinion counts for nothing but there it is. Glad you're satisfied enough!
I suspect you will enjoy 7 Moons, but I can't believe the treatment of Maps, it was criminal. :)
Well! Thank you for this update. I like Midnight’s Children, so maybe I’ll try this out at some point :)
Yeah, definately try this is you like Midnight's Children - if Rushdie was Sri Lankan and had more of a sense of humour, this is what he would have written.
Sri Lankan Salman Rushdie. Huh. Interesting.
Love your reaction!
Yeah, this is very Midnight's Children if it was about Sri Lanka and not India. I think he's better than Rushdie, but then again I don't get along with Rushdie, so take that with a grain of salt, but I don't think it's controversial to say he's funnier.
I need to read this as on my radar. I also have Glory. I don’t get the hype over Treacle Walker 🤷🏻♀️
Treacle Walker, more people like than people who can explain what he was on about.
I have yet to read this book, so I have no feelings about it at the moment. I will probably try to get to it before the end of the year though. I do enjoy magical realism and don’t mind slow or bouncing all over the place, so perhaps it’ll be my cup of tea.
If you enjoy Magical Realism then I think you'll like this one, it's very good at what it's doing.
So glad that Treacle Walker didn’t win 😂
Still haven’t read Moons yet, but pretty happy with it as winner out of the options.
I finished Maps yesterday though - HOW DID THAT NOT MAKE THE SHORTLIST!!
Haha, I love it! The options are so poor you're happy with a book you haven't read.
I'm still sore about Maps, the judges cannot like the same things a lot of us do with reading.
Good reaction video. I failed to start Maali until the day before the announcement so I’m still reading it. Happy with it as a winner though I think. Maps was robbed.
Hope you enjoy it, I think it's very good at what it's doing, so it depends on how you get along with magical realism. I'm still sore about Maps.
I am super happy with the winner!! It was my fave from the shortlist and my second fave from the longlist.🎉🎉🎉
Another season done ✅😅
I think it's a good winner, I think it would have won the people's vote.
Glory should have won. 😢
I would have picked it if I were judging.
I like slow books so I won't be disappointed 😆
You're set. It's certainly not a bad book at all, it's very good at what it wanted to do.
What??? Isn't the winner Tomb of sands???? Nobody is mentioning that neither included in your.list.. whateven!!!
Tomb of Sands won the International Booker, the award for best translated book.
The international Booker prize and the Booker prize are different prizes with very similar names run by the same organisation.
Judges who reliably like magical realism?
That's a nice surprise. I thought folks with prestigious opinions were still pretty closed off to books that could be seen - in a certain light - as genre fiction.
(my thoughts are often behind the curve)
The Booker Prize loves magical realism - but only when they think it has a James Joyce wankerish style to it, because yeah as you fear they're snobs and wouldn't want it labelled as genre fiction.
