People seem pretty shocked in most reactions Ive watched. I'm sorry the shortlist isn't good, but am glad you suffered through the long list to recommend some good books!
Thank you, yeah, it's even stranger now I've read their justifications, it's about language they said, so they cut the book that is about a language going extinct. 3 books doing very similar things (Glory, Trees and 7 Moons), not saying they're bad, but pick one.
Been waiting to watch all the shortlist videos until yours dropped! So glad Glory made the list! WAIT How did Spectacular Bodies not get shortlisted???? WTF!!! Relieved Booth wasn't on there. OMG All the booker videos I've watched and I don't think a single one has even acknowledged Trust lmao I totally agree the judges did a terrible job with that. Definitely suspect of those judges. They need to go on time out!
Nobody with tastebuds! Books that don't work as a story are useless, if the author is trying to saying something smart without characters or plot they should just write an essay.
Yeah, it's really unbalanced; 3 political satires of variable qualities, a book of complete nonsense by an old white man who apparently was great in the 60s, but he wrote it in a dialect so it must be good, the 3rd book in a rather average series, and a lovely but very simple novella. To be fair to the judges they gave themself a tough time with a rather poor longlist.

Your reaction cheered me up a bit! Maps was robbed! Robbed I tell you! I can’t believe Treacle Walker and Oh William are there instead of Maps and The Colony.
Maps is the Careless of the Booker Prize. Those 2 swaps would have been perfect, great shortlist. It really is the trash that they've let through that's upset me.
I definitely malfunctioned when these were announced. My live stream were joking about Treacle Walker and we lost it when it was read out. Maps will always be my winner. I’m so confused how that and The Colony didn’t make it.
I watched your reaction when I was cooking, so I might not have commented, but it was such a fair reaction, the needing of time to process was so apt, like doing badly in a pop quiz and just trying to understand where it all went wrong sums up the shortlist for me. I'm questioning everything I know about books.
Yeahhh, I was watching it luve being like. I don't understand..and when he stopped talking after Oh William and I realized none of the other books made it I was just like . . .
I know, there needed to be more books on the shortlist... And fancy finishing on Oh William, the book nobody really had an opinion on, hide it in the middle, don't put it on the end and disappoint us with it.

The shocking prize! 🤣I am surprised Spectacular Bodies didn't go through. Happy about The Trees. (Even though I haven't read either one). Maybe you can come and follow The Giller Prize with us Canucks! 😊💙
Yeah, everything I enjoyed in this longlist I had either already read or I was reading anyway. I knew going into Oh William it wasn't a book I was likely to enjoy, and I would never have picked up Trust, Booth or Treacle Walker. I might feel differently in 12 months, but I don't see why I would read it again, women's prize only for me.
@@GunpowderFictionPlot I’m interested in that new North American womens prize recently announced, I think for next year, which looks to be pretty literary. Books I can actually get from the library? Yes, please.
Like eating fennel! 😂 I am obviously not a Booker fan - I’m more a fan of the content people produce about it. Each year, when I watch people’s reviews I’m always glad I only pick a few titles to read after other readers have filtered out the boring stuff. Don’t do it to yourself next year Scott - follow my unadventurous lead and just read the ones that sound like your thing! 😂
Yeah, I get sucked in by the Woman's Prize each year, because that's fantastic and I think well it's just the Booker without men, the Booker will be fine and it's not!
I haven’t read Maps as I assumed by everyones reaction to it that it would be on the shortlist. I am going to read that now instead of the 3 shortlisted books I haven’t read as I still have no interest in them. Its a disappointing list so I loved your honest reactions.
@@GunpowderFictionPlot If I were a betting person I would put my money on Treacle Walker. Isn't this one of the first adult novels he has written? I think it is more YA.
Yeah, last year I didn't much like the longlist, but the shortlist addressed that really well. This year I thought the longlist was very poor and the shortlist hasn't fixed that, it kind of feels random.
@@GunpowderFictionPlot In the ennnnndless blathering prior to the announcement the judges said their selections were based on on a theme of novel use of language. The 6 they picked fit that. Colony is a flawlessly told story but not experimental with language. Ditto Maps with the amazing novel voice of cancer. I will not be reading the entire longlist ever again. How did I drag myself through Oh William?! And to think it is a tetrology. Yo, that honor belongs to Elena Ferrante.
Yeah, it's staggering that language was used as a justification, cut the book literally about language and the book with the more playful and experiential language. Yeah, I don't know why I bothered with Oh William after I didn't enjoy Lucy Barton. Just end it Elizabeth!
‘This is a terrible prize’ 😂🤣😂
The laughs I got from your reaction almost makes the crap list worth it 😆
Almost! I can't think how bad my reaction will be if Treacle Walker wins.
@@GunpowderFictionPlot it’s defo going to win mate 😂
Being announced in his birthday, it's really set up for it. 🙁
Treacle Walker "For fuck's sake" 😂😂
Same, same
People seem pretty shocked in most reactions Ive watched. I'm sorry the shortlist isn't good, but am glad you suffered through the long list to recommend some good books!
Yeah, it's certainly not what I was expecting. A lot of the big names are gone.
Your reaction to Treacle Walker is 👌 😂😂😂
😁 that book is so bad
The reaction video I was waiting for!
"Did they even read the book?" is an excellent question here 😅Love your complete honesty, yikes what a bizarre short list
Thank you, yeah, it's even stranger now I've read their justifications, it's about language they said, so they cut the book that is about a language going extinct. 3 books doing very similar things (Glory, Trees and 7 Moons), not saying they're bad, but pick one.
THIS IS LIKE EATING FENNEL!!! 😂
Cracked me up, too
Nobody likes Fennel it's horrible
😂😂 I love your reaction 😂😂 This is like eating fennel 🤪
Thank you, nobody likes Fennel! 😁
Your reaction is glorious! Comparing the list to eating fennel. I die.
Thank you, yeah this list gets into everything.
Nice reactions! 😎👍

Maps was so good and nothing. 🙁
We need new judges!
🤣so sorry I am laughing at your pain right now
That's okay, I'm used to it, I married Nelle.
Ditto your reaction!!!
Think there's a few people confused.
I'm very behind but this was so entertaining, I'm sorry for your misery. 😂
Thank you, as long as my pain can save you from Treacle Walker then it's all good. 😁
This is why I’m always wary of the Booker Prize! I don’t understand half of what they’re trying to say! 😂 And who eats fennel?!?! 🤢📚

I'm watching the second time since I missed the fennel comment on the first go-round! 😄
😁 you can't miss fennel it gets everywhere.
Hahahahahaha that is the best reaction ever.
😁 thank you
This was my exact reaction. Thank you for validating it lol
That's okay, I'm glad I'm not alone.
Gutted about Maps!! 😭😭 I love the shortlist though apart from the absence of Maps!! 😂
Maps certainly would have improved things, it would be enough to change my opinion, but I'm quite upset none of the emotional novels made it.
@@GunpowderFictionPlot I wonder why that is 🤔 Maybe the judges have deep rooted issues that they are not confronting 😂
Yes, they're afraid to cry! 😁
I propose if "Glory" wins you must eat fennel......
That's a harsh bargain... But I'm not eating fennel, not even if Maps win.

I will give it one thing, it's very short, if you hate it it's over quickly, you barely have time to DNF.

I bet Treacle Walker wins. The prize will be awarded on his 88th birthday. He will be the oldest author to win the prize. Cynical aren't I?
