It's sad to see that genuinely good female rappers are being over looked for mediocre rappers who are pushed forward just cause of they're attractiveness. Like some of them could let their looks carry them but put there amazing lyricism, flow and talent shine over their drop dead gorgeous faces and bodies. People like Flo milli, Monaleo, Megan (although polarising to some), Nicki and more.

I was really hoping you’d mention Foxy Brown and Rico Nasty.
Foxy was Nicki’s main influence and the reason she wanted to start rapping. Foxy has lots of fire music too.
Rico is probably one of the most creative female rappers out there. She fuses metal, punk, hyperpop, and rock into her rapping, and it works so well.
These 2 women definitely deserve more credit and recognition.

Her song "Girls" is one of my favs and it's so mellow meanwhile "Crazy" is high energy and vicious.
She's also one of the very few artists who made a Halloween song "Spookie Coochie" which I think is a really nice marker to an artist being kind of "Alt" in a way which made great sense when she did a Collab with Rico Nasty.

I think she also almost created a third lane for female rappers. The two main types of female rappers tended to be thought of as either hypersexual or concious feminist and Missy showed a third possibility where you can just be your self and even be eccentric without being always very wise and feminist or very sexual and "hot". That is how you got great later rappers like Rico Nasty or Tierra Whack who didn´t fit in either the concious feminist or hypersexual hot female rapper stereotype. I am not againts sexual or councious rappers either. I like both Megan (actually more than Nicky) and Little Simz

  • @nbabackcourtmedia

  • @mumei8062
    @mumei8062 Год назад +186

What kinda irks me tho is that male rap has been declining in quality for years now imo. obviously there are the greats like kendrick, j cole etc. but like most of these newer male rappers, rap about the same sht in every song and nobody cares. but when female rap faces a similar issue all of a sudden it’s “female rap is boring” “bring the bars” blablabla. women always face higher expectation as men and it’s so annoying. thats also why you NEVER see a non attractive woman get successfull but there are tons of men coming to mind who arent conventionally attractive not just in rap but in the entertainment industry in general. women always have to do 10x more than men and still wont get the same respect. and for black women it’s even worse.

She's overlooked and judged (sometimes positively, sometimes negatively) for making oversexualised music, but her actual discography and songwriting is phenomenal, she's a really great lyricist. Rap is inherently braggadocious, competitive. It’s about pushing your pend, craft, & flow. I think a lot of the women in the 80s and 90s felt they couldn’t express a lot of their femininity in order to be “taken seriously” in the male dominated field.

  • @souliselene

I really enjoyed your comment on the profitability and therefore popularity of hyper-sexual female rap tropes and their violent male counterparts and how that in turn reinforces stereotypes. It seems to be a never ending cycle because although particularly black women and men might have an independent drive to create and be heard they learn the only way for them to do that is to conform the stereotypical rap styles. I also enjoyed what you said about the importance of women rapping about their experience as women & poc women alike. There’s so much more to the female & black female experience than being marginalized and discriminated against as well as being the voluptuous sexy it girl. I’ve found that smino’s most recent album illuminated the black experience of family dynamics, brotherly love and undeniable black style. This made me conscious of a beautiful culture I never knew as a mixed 20 something growing up in a white family. I also appreciate the doechii and little sims love!! Just a great essay in general

Music reflects the time. Especially pop music. Rap is pop music for the most part. Rappers are giving you what's popular now.
Stripper culture brought you strippers rapping. Like gangster culture brought you gangsters rapping. Dope fiend pill popping culture brought you dope fiends rapping. Conscious culture brought you conscious rappers.
Musicians are a reflection of the times. Popular artist reflect now. Legendary artist make timeless music but they tap into now also. A few years ago we only had one female artist doing well. Now we sick of them doing well. Yet we never sick of these mediocre or pathetic male rappers.

I think in itself, having a discussion of whether these artists should be referred to as “female rappers” or simply “rappers” is interesting. The term “rappers” is good in that it does not isolate female artists as a seperate category, instead allowing them to be viewed on the same playing field as male artists. However, the term “female rappers” in itself is not necessarily negative in acknowledging gender, rather it just recognises that these people have been able to achieve success in a male-dominated industry. I don’t know which is better - I guess it just depends on the individual preferences of the artist.

The same with actors and actresses. Waiter and Waitress, even animals have this though, lion, and lioness, tiger and tigress, frog and frog, bees and knees, you get it. ive always thought it was silly to denote it when it comes to proffessions where it doesnt make a difference but people actually enjoy categories more often than not. Its organized. Makes sense of otherwise clutter. Labels are more often than not, helpful and convenient. But again, when would it matter whether your server is a man or woman? a doctor, depending on the issue i get, but rappers? Actors? Teachers dont have that, BUT at the same time, its not harmful, just unnecessary and annoying. It happens in metal too, youll see lists that specify female lead metal bands. While its irritating because they are metal bands, who cares what gender the lead is, i DO prefer male leads, and its what i typically listen to, so the label prepares me to hear differences in vocals. I also can look up female lead bands if i like and because they DID do this, i can find many just by googling it. sometimes theyre good somethings theyre bad ( labels denoting gender )

I always wondered about the public assumption when it comes to ghost writers. U can get writing credits if u contribute one line to the song. But whenever u see extra names being credited, everyone assumes it’s the whole song being written for someone and the female rap artists doesn’t write anything. No one knows how much or how little is written on any song.
But with female rappers it’s always an assumption of them writing nothing but the men never have that assumption placed on them. Drake was called out a while back for ghost writers but he still has countless writers on a song but I never hear “this song was written for Drake”

A female MC who has admirable penmanship and isn' t hypersexualized.
She raps about a wide variety of topics pertaining to struggle and come-ups. Like the challenges of females in poor ghetto communities, motherhood, parent abandonment issues, the come up and sharing your success with your peers.

I think it's great you mentioned Little Simz!!! Her lyrics are completely amazing and i think she's genuinely such a musical genius. It's a shame that she doesn't get the same recognition as some of the other girlies that get radio-play, i think she's on the same level as lauryn hill (maybe even better but thats my opinion) and she can easily put out any mainstrean male rapper out today imo. Just hope she gets even more recognition... Being from the uk and not having an exactly "usual" flow might contribute to her not being as known maybe and not exactly doing pop songs

I really love 070 Shake and I definitely feel like with the male artists she’s collabbed with she should be way more popular. Like I support the girls but I also find the hyper sexuality unrelatable, so artists like 070 Shake singing about their mental health and relationship dynamics feels more relatable to me. And Doja Cat’s hyper sexuality is so quirky it’s fun to me in an uncanny valley way at times, so for me it’s just easier to get bored with all the explicit sex in music. I love Rico Nasty, Princess Nokia and Ashnikko for similar reasons as Doja Cat they have this psycho baddie aesthetic can be more in their feels and their explicit lyrics can be more tongue in cheek humor which I love!

The difference between now and the 90s on a commercial level is that now there isn't much variety in regards to content. A lot of the female rappers content is very similar. Where in the 90s, u had Kim,Foxy, Latifah, Missy, Bahamadia, Brat, Lady of Rage, Gangsta Boo, Lauryn, Heather B I could keep going. The Emcees 2day who have different content such as Your Rapsody, T Whack, Little Simz etc don't get the same push

Good list but can I just, as a middle aged white man from Northern Europe remind you of:
Daisy Castro (Baby Love) from The Rock Steady Crew. Their hit "(Hey You) The Rock Steady Crew" paved the way for ALL female rappers. Because she were the first. Had video in 1983 and topped the chart all over Europe. First female rap superhit from US. No drug eyes and hustle or expensive video's, no boobs in your face etc. , just young people with big boomblasters having fun, then taking off becaue their rap and melody had the value.
I heard the song over 1 year before it finally were released on a larger label from a copy of a copy of a tape bought directly from them on the streets of NY. That copy were a hit in my local youth club before ever being played on the radio. 10 years after released it still were coming on the radio once in a while.
