    The people want a general election, why in this instance won’t the Tories now support ‘the will of the people’? It’s all they banged on about from 2016-2019.

      Because now they would lose more than half of their seats. They've lost a large sum of voters to Labour, they have lost the Lunatics to Reform UK and a couple of seats to Labour and the LibDems in recent by-elections. They don't care about the "the will of the people". Otherwise the whole ordeal which brought them where they are now would not have been marketed as an opinion poll.

      @nick9669 2 месяца назад +6

      Doesn’t really work in the current system. 2019 proved this when the Fixed Term Parliament Act was still in force. Johnson lost some of his pro-EU MP’s and kicked some more out, meaning the government had no working majority. At the same time the opposition parties would not allow him to call an election. This culminated in them forcing Johnson to send a letter requesting an extension of EU membership against his will. Depending on what side of the debate you were on, you may have found this quite a good thing, but it’s certainly not something that could have continued for a further 2 years if the SNP and Lib Dems hadn’t caved and given him an election.

    You missed some of the biggest factors:
    - Small boats will increase over the summer due to weather, opening up strong attack lines for Reform UK.
    - The tories are spending campaign finances too quickly and will run out if it's not until October
    - Isaac Levido is in and out of number ten far more often than we'd expect 6 months out from an election.

    • @zigzagnemesist5074
      @zigzagnemesist5074 2 месяца назад +28

      That first point is actually very underrated. That issue alone can swing a lot of voters from conservatives to reform. Along with potentially more high profile defections to Reform as MP’s jump ship before it sinks.

    • @Wozza365
      @Wozza365 2 месяца назад +10

      Do people actually care about the small boats that much? Like I'm concerned with illegal migration and want to see the issue resolved obviously, but there are so many bigger problems that have a bigger effect on everyone. The country is falling apart ffs.

      @@Wozza365 The 25% that are still considering voting Tory and the 10% considering Reform do consider it one of their top issues. Conservatives have long abandoned any hope of regaining the "centrist" vote, but this is the wage issue that can decide whether Reform will get any MPs at all or if Conservatives will go below 100.
      Also, keep in mind that even most people for whom this is a key issue don't understand how immigration works or how small of a fraction comes via small boats or the Rewanda bill itself. This is all about the headlines, Sunak wants to steal attention from Reform to get a 5% boost and the moment he does he will call the election.

  • @WhichDoctor1
    @WhichDoctor1 2 месяца назад +33

    theres also the fact that every month they delay hundreds of thousands more homeowners will reach the end of their pre inflation fixed term mortgages and be forced to remortgage at the much higher interest rate. Which will bring down their standard of living significantly whatever else is going on. And the tories rely on winning over established home owners as one of their core voting blocks to win elections. The more time goes by the more pensioners will notice that their taxes have gone up in the recent budget too and therefore their income has gone down. Pensioners being the last hard core group of tory voters in the country. There's also the fact that even if they get the Rwanda bill pushed through parliament they have no plan to actually get any flights taking off, and any plan they start putting together now will take months and a lot of money to get working. Which will make them look even more incompetent after pushing soo hard to bring it into law. If they do get it working then it will become immediately obvious that it has zero impact on small boat numbers. It really does make far more sense for them to get the election done soon before the other shoes drops on all these other issues

    Rishi’s at the behest of his wife(‘s father’s) business interests. The obfuscation and FOI denials around any ongoings regarding infosys or similar meetings show that clearly.
    He will run the country into the ground to be a good little lapdog; his joint interview with wife last week showed how much she resents and controls him.

    As a parent of two teens whove been on the electoral register since they were 16, I sort of want January as the younger one will then be 18 and can vote. Otherwise May. Anything just before mid December would just make them annoyed that they've just missed out. Yhe spring is better as it's over six months before.

    Head says Oct, because that's what they've stated.
    Cynic in me says Jan 2025 because they'll hold on for every single moment they can.
    Longer they hold out, the more the public will get annoyed and fed up. They could deliever actual unicorns at this point and it will probably be too late.

    The real question is why would Sunak care how badly the Torries lose? As long as they're in oposition after the election, he and his other current MPs may retire from politics (as many have already announced). There is no way he'd remain the leader.
    So the only difference is if he'd rather be the PM for 2 more months or for 10 more months.

    If right wing voters can't coalesce behind the Tories and defect to Reform in large numbers, it's not overdramatic to say that this election could turn into an extinction-level event for them. If the already reduced right-wing vote is split between Tory and Reform, what that functionally means is that the third alternative (whether that be Labour, Lib Dem, etc.) wins the seat more often. That's how we get into the 450+ seat range
