Last Thanksgiving, one of my relatives brought 100 oysters from his friend's farm on the Virginia coast. I shucked around 30 and got the hang of it because I have watched enough videos or have seen it at restaurants. Make sure to wear the glove for many reasons, from safety to keeping them dry and clean. At the Union Oyster House in Boston, they bang the shucking knife on 150-year old stones and force the oyster hinge to cut from the downward force. One great condiment is Kikkoman Ponzu soy sauce with added vinegar. It's mild, sweet, citrusy, and has low sodium.
1.) Don't rip the belly. 2.) watch the tiny broken shell particles before selling them 3.) use cold plate. Store them in low boy. Use crushed ice not salt.
Yoooo I'm super excited to try this for my wife who asked that we have a nice getaway with all you can eat oysters! Now I can do it myself AND introduce the clam experience. Awesome stuff man!
Thanks for the tips. I got a cheap shucker press and it's pretty good. The oysters I bought today were delicious. First time eating at home . I did cook them for few minutes, lemon olive oil
I've had oysters twice this year. Once with cheese sauce, the other tempura style, both amazing. Kilpatrick is next I think. I also had clams for the first time this year and I love them.
I'm a short drive from Apalachicola. And Chefed on Cape Cod for a few seasons. And I love all oysters that I've tried. What a neat dude and cool video. We have great ones down here in Apalachicola Bay. But there's several kinds up the Eastern Seaboard and I love the variety
You should try the East Hampton Shucking tool, it's the safest and easiest way to open oysters. You dont hold down the oyster down with your hand. It keeps your hand away from the knife and you won't hurt.
Set the raw oyster on a saltine cracker, add lemon juice , a touch of Tabasco sauce and a dab of horseradish , chase with cold beer! Raw oysters Florida style.
I just went and picked a few dozen perfect oysters straight from the pacific plus a half dozen dungeness crab. Tonight, while feasting, I'll remember your name.
I've never tried oysters. Always thought it was gross but how many videos I've seen of oysters and how many people love them makes me feel like I'm missing out and wanna try em
Clams on the 1/2 shell are on my top 3 favorite foods to eat. Hey Munchies Staff' Mind if I make a small request? ok great thanks. Can you guys make a short video called "Tasting the Top Shelf" with Farideh and show us whats in all those jars behind the person cooking and have them just run through them tasting away. haha. Its just something I've always been curious about when i see it in a scene. Thanks Love you guys & keep up the great work.
You can gently scrub the oyster before shucking it, at least is what I do usually. Scrubbing removes the flakey part of the shell that dumps inside the oyster ruining everything
Great video. I love to shuck and eat the various oysters farmers grow here in the Narragansett Bay. Perfect companion to a craft beer. By the way, what caviar would you recommend for the average person who cannot drop $200 on an ounce of said fish eggs?
Gloves are for frightened stabie newbies forcing too much. A sidetowl/dishcloth is more than enough, including on day one. Pop and scrape, wipe the oyster knive all the time, never stick it in dirty, and keep it all very clean. Perfect flip and present, and if there's even the tiniest bit of shell or skank, it is a failure and a discrace to the oyster. The way to learn is to get a job doing it, or host a party with forgiving friends and shuck a couple hundred of them in a row.
So much talk about tools but no mention of the types of oysters. I used to think oysters were too salty gor me, then found out I had only tried one type - tried a less briny kind and liked it.
Really informative! Just curious, do these animals feel pain?? I've always wondered this. I want to eat an oyster but... Yea I don't know :D It doesn't look tastefull
Also can you freeze raw clams in there shell to use 3 to 6 months later or should you unshell them and freeze them deshelled ? Just curious if it make a significant difference in preserving them for long times
No discussion on the safety of eating raw oyster & clams? I'd love some more information on this. I know buying shell fish from a farmed operation like this is typically safe but what if you're procuring them for yourself from the water?
When I was in elementary school, we went on a field trip to the seafood museum. This was in Biloxi, MS. The guy working the oyster station told us that at least one person die per year from eating raw oysters while he was shucking a raw oyster and eating it. I found out years later that he died. This was almost 30 years ago. The number of people dying per year went up. This is only in the south though.
I have a place in Bayonne, NJ where they shuck them on the spot. Susan and I get a tray of 12. we squeeze lemon on then and use a seafood fork to eat and CHEW each one. They always give us fresh hors radish and I eat that after the real food. Clams are for steaming and eating with butter and beer.
Are oysters not filter fish ? I heard that they have to be treated before eating as they filter water , is that correct ? Because he looks like he’s just eating them straight out of the water.
James Kwon That only works for oysters outside of Louisiana. We have brain eating amoeba down here. Lol. Plus, 10% of our oysters have worms. You can go to any restaurant down here and find worms in your oysters.

Its such a skill to be able to do this, Chris presents this in a really engaging and clear way! I hope I get to see him in other Oyster related videos
I like how useful this is in case we have to battle Atlantis one day.
We can send Japan first and they'll eat most the enemies

Antonio Casano eww why would I crave kids
Hairyurinal Lmao 😂
Boy, I had to wade through a whole bunch of videos to finally get to one with a detailed explanation of the correct method of shucking. Great job!
Caviar on the oysters. That’s baller!
I like your style, the camera shots, from the start. I also read the a smattering of the comments below, all of it made me smile.
1.) Don't rip the belly. 2.) watch the tiny broken shell particles before selling them 3.) use cold plate. Store them in low boy. Use crushed ice not salt.

I've had fried oysters, I've never had raw oysters and RN I'm craving raw oysters. Guess pickles and ham sandwiches will have to do.
Go to India, they have plenty of mutant swamp creatures for you to eat

This is super addicting to watch I love oysters so much ❤️👍🏻
I live where these oysters are from.. they’re amazing top notch and I shucking love them

That's amazing. I haven't eaten oysters in a while so, now I have more info and tips for next time, thank you.
Youve got to! we all should eat more

thisdamnthingy time to challenge yourself and try oysters raw!
I think the first one I ever had was raw, I was drunk, it was a bad time.
That being said, I wouldn't be totally against having another shot at it.
The only way is to eat them raw! The rest is such a waste
you have to eat them raw but make sure you are at a good location
That’s the kind of episodes I like 👌
I like to mix bit of tabasco, lemon juice, and soy sauce when eating raw oysters.
I like eating oysters naked (plain), only when they're so good that don't need anything.
@@bobbiusshadow6985 I like eating them naked. Both myself, my date, and the oyster
no wrong way to do it, but you always should try one of the plate with no sauce
I ate a lot of oysters when I was younger but my mom always baked it. Ate it with salt pepper lemon. Good shit.
Nothing like getting home after a long day, popping in that Despicable Me DVD and throwing back a few Minion-ette clams
Oysters, clams and cockles!

I don't like them. But I love clams. I would recommend trying both.
Oysters are a little more soft in texture and have a sweeter flavor than clams.
Well shucks, these side-splitting jokes just write themselves!
Love raw oysters, steamed clams, caviar, steamed crabs, shrimp etc.. . been eating them all my life... also love hush puppies..

I like just a little dab of wasabi and a few drops of ponzu or soy sauce. My favorite way. I’ll eat a bunch this weekend.
One thing I frequently encounter while shucking is that tiny pieces of the shell get into the oyster. Any advice on how to avoid that?
You can gently scrub the oyster before shucking it, at least is what I do usually. Scrubbing removes the flakey part of the shell that dumps inside the oyster ruining everything
Another thing to do besides scrubbing the shells is to wipe off your knife after you start to pop the shell off.
I never liked them. And i just had a couple about a month ago. Now i get em whenever i can
Thanks to Munchies, i dont hammer my clams and oysters open now 😃

is there a way to tell which direction the clam is sitting?

I just got oysters to try for the first time. Mine was tough to open, but the meat itself is a light gray/transparent color. Is this okay to eat?
yes that's the normal color. If they are nice, cold and fresh they should be fine.
Frieing an oyster should only be done after you have had several raw. The Fried oyster takes on a different flavor. Raw is much better.
Clean the oyster shell prior to shucking

No it's not bad, all oyster bar do that, they were well alive when they opened them. It's just to keep them cold. (Not suppose to be frozen tho)

I use to chuck oysters for my dadwhen I was a kid we used a flat head

everything you need to know to get up to speed on clams 🤣🤣
The first oyster has no condiments, you have it as it is, it’s called a naked oyster.
I'm concerned now, I just bought 5 dozen fresh live oysters and have frozen them. Will they be ok?
No, cook them.
How do you prevent bits of shell falling into the cup. Some oyster shells are brittle around the edges.
Most people have a cup of water on the side to dip their oyster in there for this problem.
@@PokeYourEyez You will lose the oyster liquor though which is what makes oyster so good.

How come no one feels bad about ripping the oysters in half and eating them live vs boiling a lobster alive 🤷🏻♂️
Maybe because when you eat a oyster, they are already dead?
Oysters don’t have a brain
i like clams
If you’re just gonna do this like once, a flat head screw driver will do ok for oysters.
