I don’t know about the Aussie bikes but the American DR650’s need the BST mods to make them smoother at lo speed including air box mods. Barry at Cross Training Adventure seems to understand that.
Definitely can work well if done properly but can be done wrong like my bike had done to before I bought it ..(it had a hole in slide and air box ) stock pilots and aftermarket needle.. it wouldn’t go over 70 at altitude I agree for a bigger pilot jet and aftermarket exhaust to run smoother but do not think it is a necessity to cut the air box, change needle etc.. I personally trust the engineers at Suzuki more so I have never been on a US variant so mabye your right! I will have a look at Cross training adventure. Each to their own .. my bike runs well with bigger pilot and aftermarket exhaust.. Air fuel screw and needle are adjustable on Aussie,uk , Canada models
From my research US models : 6F23 fixed clip position jet needle Y-5M needle jet Blocked off unadjustable airfuel screw Aus/uk / Canada 5slots to adjust needle clip Adjustable airfuel screw Different needle (will find the name for you shortly) I believe both come with the same jets 140 main and 42.5 pilot I have changed my pilot to 45 and have aftermarket exhaust.. runs smooth for a tame rider like myself
G'day mate, glad I could help and thank you for that video you did on the mods! Cheers... Mark

How do the Australian DR650's carbs differ to the American versions?
From my research

Y-5M needle jet
Blocked off unadjustable airfuel screw
Aus/uk / Canada
5slots to adjust needle clip
Adjustable airfuel screw
Different needle (will find the name for you shortly)
