  • Over the years I've had lots of questions and people interested in tatting this pattern. After several requests... finally!: this is the first in a series of videos which will explain how to make it.
    * * Don't forget to adjust the settings to see this video in better, HD quality * * *
    This vintage pattern can still be found in print but is also freely available online as it is now out of copyright. You can find it on pages 15-17 of the Priscilla Tatting Book no. 2, available here: www.georgiaseit...
    On my blog, you can also find a written explanation of the first round of the pattern with photos which you may find useful in complement to the video: leblogdefrivole...
    I am tatting with Lizbeth thread is size 20, colourway 660 (Country Turquoise Lt).

      Hi Maria, you are right, this definitely isn't the simplest of patterns but once you get into it, it's not that difficult either. You have to break it down into small parts and then it seems more achievable. This pattern has been popular so I wanted to help more people tackle it if they wished.

      @@11Frivole I am excited to follow this pattern. Yes, breaking it up, rather than looking at it as a whole, makes it so much more achievable. Thank you and I will get my shuttle and ball thread going. :)

    You make this look so easy. My fingers are shorter than yours. Especially my pinky finger, which causes the thread in my left hand to only stay just behind that last finger joint. It makes it much more difficult to relax my hand. I call this finger gymnastics. The self closing mock ring is insanley difficult for my hand. I have tried wrapping the ball thread a couple of more times around my pinky finger to try to allow me to relax my left hand and still be able to do that first stitch. So hard for me. Wow you are so good at this. My wrist is so sore after 4 repeats. I am sure I am doing somthing wrong. I did not have carple tunnel but I might, now. I must be holding things too tight or pulling closed too hard. I will continue to watch your fantasic examples and try to emulate that. It seems so effortless for you. I love your techniques and your video quality is outstanding. Very easy to see, exactly, the position of the thread and what I need to do. Please keep doing videos.

    • @pandoradestiny8325
      @pandoradestiny8325 3 года назад

      Update: It turns out, wrapping that loop around my pinky finger instead of ring finger, works perfectly. I guess my ring finger just has no dexterity. I have it down now. Thank you so much for the clear videos. I have learned so much from you.

    • @11Frivole
      @11Frivole  3 года назад

      Dear Pandora, thank you for your lovely comment! Are you a new tatter? Perhaps it just takes time for your hand to adjust to the movements and not feel tense as you are making them. Tension should not be too tight as to make your fingers feel cramped. I'm sure that with some practice you will be able to relax your hand more and still be able to make the stitches. :-)

    • @11Frivole
      @11Frivole  3 года назад

      Hi Pandora, do you mean wrapping the loop at the start of a SCMR? I've never tried it with my pinky finger but I will next time! It just felt comfortable to me with my ring finger but you have to go with what feels best for you.

    • @pandoradestiny8325
      @pandoradestiny8325 3 года назад

      @@11Frivole yes, the SCMR where you wrap the loop around your ring finger. I cannot perform this at all. I have discovered if I wrap ball thread around my pinky a couple of extra times to keep thread from sliding and then wrap loop from my shuttle around my pinky and hold it for the first two stitches, then drop that loop, I can do this pretty easily now. Yes, I am fairly new to tatting. I love your videos, like I said earlier.

    Why don’t you close the large ring with a loop similar to the small mock ring?

    • @11Frivole
      @11Frivole  2 года назад

      Hi Nancy, that's a good question! In fact, with hindsight, I don't know why I didn't make the very first large ring as a regular ring... maybe I just wanted to show a different technique, I can't remember now why I made that choice. As for all the other large rings, yes you could make them as self-closing mock rings too but I believe I chose the alligator join because it was more in keeping with the original pattern (would need to go back to examine the pattern again) and I like the look of it and is maybe easier to accomplish than a SCMR?

    Absolutely genius having all the stitches made with the ball thread! I truly dislike hiding ends. If you’re making it as a collar, is one able to omit joining it into a round?

    • @11Frivole
      @11Frivole  4 года назад +1

      Yes, I agree about stitches with the ball thread and it means hardly having to refill your shuttle which is another good thing. Yes, you could omit joining if you wish and leave it open at the back but you'd have to adjust the pattern a bit on the edges.

    • @11Frivole
      @11Frivole  3 года назад

      The first one I made weighs 23 grams so one ball should be enough but it depends a bit on your tension and how much wastage of thread you end up with. I'll be able to confirm once I complete this version.

      Hi Igor, I must admit this video is not one of my best as I had to do it in sections and re-do parts of the video (I kept making mistakes!). However, I cannot see where you say the image is blurry as when I view it from my end, the image seems fine all the way through the video (although the sound and image may seem slightly different from section to section because it was not all filmed at the same time).
