Hello Kevin and Liza! As usual, your classes and explanations are very clear and useful for me, but there are always some other doubts I would like you to explain. For example, the difference between To think OF vs To think ABOUT; To talk TO vs To talk WITH. Which is the correct preposition to be used in these cases? Thank you very much. Teacher Alfredo from Cuba.
Thank you for your videos. I appreciate your effort. I have a question about the letter 'e'. Sometimes it has different sounds in different words, like: bed (/bed/), response (/rɪˈspɑːns/), presentation ( /ˌprezənˈteɪʃən/), extraneous (/ɪkˈstreɪniəs/). How can I know whether to use the /ɪ/ vowel or the /e/ vowel? Is there any rule or pattern for this? Thank you for your explanation.
Could you please explain the "Low back merger" (where /ɔ/ and maybe /ɒ/ become /ɑ/) and the "Weak vowel merger" (where unstressed /ɪ/ and maybe /ʊ/ become /ə/) ? I'm learning to pronounce words in American English (in general), so I focus on the most standard/common pronunciations, but it's very difficult to know what they are, various dictionaries differ from each other and I think the main conflicts are based on these two mergers, the rest is usually consistent. So far my understanding is that in General American English (or Standard American English) people pronounce /ɑ/ instead of /ɔ/ (and they use /ɔ/ only in /ɔɪ/ and /ɔɹ/), and that /ɪ/ and /ʊ/ in unstressed syllables should be pronounced as /ə/, but I really don't know.
" Hello !! Teachers from English for Everyone . Since Covid-19 I had been teaching myself English. I really enjoy this Vowels lesson. Teachers, I have a little request about : How to pronounce the Consonant letter " L " I still don't get it when is dark L or light L. I will appreciate that lesson. Keep on the amazing journey of meaningful and Mindful English Language Skills . Thanks.
With the light "L" the tongue is touching the roof of the mouth right behind the teeth. With the dark "L" the tongue is further back. Thanks for watching!
