- Can you use a cyclocross bike as a gravel bike?! Sure! In this short video, JOM of the Gravel Cyclist crew discusses his cyclocross bike setup as used at events such as Gravel Worlds, Crusher in the Tushar, Almanzo 100 and Paris to Ancaster - Real World Experiences - not conjecture. You can also ride around just for fun too! In gravel, there are no rules!

I turned my full carbon Ridley X-Fire with cantilever brakes (Avid Shorty) into a gravel bike. Converted the drivetrain to a 1X SRAM Force set up and it is amazing. Thanks for a great video, hope to meet you one day……Rob K
Nice one Robin.
Great video! I've also noticed a rash of videos of people talking out of their bottom brackets about cx and gravel bikes. Obviously, you can't change the geometry, but if you're happy on the bike that counts most. Also, cx/gravel/xc/etc are only labels used for convenience, at the edges of these groups the lines blur and you can probably find two nearly identical bikes with different tags.
Thanks Ken, appreciate the feedback.
I've got an old-school CX bike (Sensa Fermo SL), put some decent canti brakes on it (TRP Revox) and switch between 32mm Gatorskins and 34mm Hutchinson Black Mamba tires depending on terrain. Quite a basic setup but so much fun on the dirt!
Great explanation. Thanks. Looking forward to next year's Paris to Ancaster.
Thanks Ed! Check out my Paris to Ancaster video here - ruclips.net/video/RqbSfGORdXU/видео.html - you are so going to live this event. A "steeplechase" on a bicycle as I like to think of it.
Talking about brakes, I vote for Magura hydraulic rim brakes. They even work in the wet - well, better than regular cable rim brakes.
I used a set with drop bar levers for years. These days I'm running a flat bar, so Magura Raceline brakes with MTB levers do a decent job.
Note: Both of my Magura brakesets are 20 years old and still going strong. Quite impressive for items that have seen so much use.
Hey Jom. Nice video. I’ve just purchased a Giant TCX Advanced Pro 2. I have put a wider cassette on and Gravelking 43s on. I reckon upto 50 would go also. I can also swop Tyres out to make a decent road set up also. In training now for Dirty Reiver. Thanks Jom.
Good luck with the Reiver, Darren, that is one I'd like to attend.
Gravel Cyclist Thanks Jom. It would be great to see the “world Famous “ gravel king at the Reiver.
very good info my friend
Nice
I use a Fuji Cyclocross as a gravel bike.
Currently setup with 700x38's.
Gearing is 1x11 38t with a 10-36 rear. I've ridden it in Iron Cross like this and it did great. Future plan is to open the gearing % up with a bigger front chainring (42) and a 10-42 or 10-46 rear.
Iron Cross, I was very bummed to have missed that race this year. I have only ridden the old course, not the current one.
@@GravelCyclist the new course is much more of a gravel ride but still incorporates great sections of sketchy forest road, and some single track. All the rain this year limited access to the new runup, which is just as shitty as the old runup. Maybe worse. Did it the previous year too.
Holy eff, the original runup was mental... it was 48% or something crazy... I suffered like a dog carrying my bike up that cursed thing. I wanted to have a nice lie down after making it to the top :)
@@GravelCyclist The new one has huge rocks on it, mostly covered in moss. It may not be as steep, I'd have to go back to my strava and look.
Jom what is the name of those aero bar (stubby) you once did a no bs review of
Farr Aero Carbon - here ya go - ruclips.net/video/nmaYPD5-84Q/видео.html
Call now go C50!
hi. did you try to convert mtb to a gravel bike? may I have the URL of the video please? 😊
Check out this bike I used to have - gravelcyclist.com/bicycle-tech/featured-bike-lynskey-monster-cross-bike-3rd-time-lucky/
"dont want to deflate tyres to fit trough cantilever brakes"
Can't you just unhook the cable on the left side at 3:43, my cantilevers can
Yes, my canti's unhook, but wider tyres are still a tight squeeze even with the canti's open.
if you buy 1 all rounder bike which 1 would you go for a gravel or a cyclocross?
Considering I don't really do cyclocross, I would choose a gravel bike. But, considering I scored a nice deal on the CX travel bike (Ritchey Breakaway Ti CX) in the video, it worked out well in that instance. So, look at what you do the most, and buy the appropriate bike! Hope this helps!
if cyclocross can do gravel then i go for cyclocross bike thanks for the advice
Thats like asking do you want a lightweight road bike, aero road bike or endurance road bike.
bro lower bottom brackets is a marketing joke. If you run anything longer than 175mm cranks, your gonna hit rocks on every ride guaranteed. Count on replacing your cranks every few 100 miles if they're carbon.
Good thing I run 170mm or 172.5mm then...
Mini V's > Avid Canti's
Ian, I have used those in the past, but in my experience, their extra power was overshadowed by their poor rim clearance. Still, the most powerful rim brakes out there IMHO.
I've raced cross and gravel on a few set ups and both Paul Mini V's and TRP CX8.4 brakes outperformed my Avid's. No rim issues on 23mm wide rims. I've since switched to hydro disc and don't miss any of them though.
Yes, hydro disc performance is on another level.
