    • @Velofil
      @Velofil  6 лет назад

      I think for touring/camping it's not the best choice. The steering is to aggressive and so is the geometry and there are no mounts for racks etc.

    • @brianward7724
      @brianward7724 6 лет назад

      Surely the steering and geometry can't be too bad, if you are able to ride off-road with no problems. No mounts can be overcome - unless it's carbon, of course.

      I have a CX bike and trekking bike. Whenever I have to transport lots of stuff (like camping) I would prefer the trekking bike. But if you just go out for the ride, the CX bike is much more fun of course!

    I’m primarily an mtb’er but I had a high end carbon road bike that I sold for an aluminum cx Bike. I put some slicker tires and now I have fully capable road bike/cx Bike that can handle any road surface. I too am a former racer (now hobbyist) and for me I gained more versatility than I lost in speed by getting a cx Bike. Works for me.

    • @brianward7724
      @brianward7724 6 лет назад

      You've almost got me convinced to do likewise, Rolando. I'd like to get into some bike touring and my very light full-carbon frame and forks are definitely not built for that. Do you do any bike touring on the CX at all?

    • @rolandovera5935
      @rolandovera5935 6 лет назад +1

      Charlie Cassowary. Hey Charlie, I’ve never done any touring although I’m sure it’s possible. The one thing about cx bikes that has taken some getting used to is the high bottom bracket (compared to a road bike). I don’t know much about touring bikes and if their geometry is significantly different to that of road bikes and cx bikes but in the spirit of this video I’m sure a cx Bike could make a nice touring bike. Velofil is pretty responsive to questions, he’ll likely give you some great insight into this if you ask him.

    I recently went from e-bike to a ”regular” bike because I noticed I’m in good enough shape to ride it. It’s faster, lighter and I get more workout on my commute. I have something they market as ”hybrid” bike with straight handle bars and narrow tires. CX would be more comfortable and maybe I switch to that some day, looks very good all-arounder in the video. Cyclo-cross and gravel bikes are versatile! I'm looking to get one myself!
    However these tests are far from scientific, as it depends on how much power your outputting Vs the other riders. I currently own a 30 years old MTB that I rescued from scrap. It's a piece of shit with failing breaks but I still managed to hit 45 kph on it when I really want to reach its top speed (which is mostly limited by it's gear ratio 40Tx13T).
    And E-Bikes are limited to 25KPH in Europe, so ofc you'd beat them. But the uphill thing is impressive (provided you weren't giving insane amounts of power for the sake of this video ;p)
    Edit: ok so should have finished the video first, you do mention you're not a racer and just a hobby cyclist,. So that makes the heart rate monitor a better indication for us! Thanks! That bike seems really impressive!
    Welches Rad ist es? Woher hast du es gekauft? Ich suche demnächst ein "billiges" CX oder gravel Rad. (I assumed you're German cause of the virtual dashboard you had ;p)

    • @Velofil
      @Velofil  6 лет назад

      Thanks! Very close, I'm from Switzerland :-) I ride a REWEL CCR Titanium with Ultegra groupset and a cheaper version with Aluminium Frame. BTW the speed of E-Bikes in Switzerland is limited to 45kph not 25kph. Maybe you have noticed that they have a yellow number plate because they are classified as scooters here. (Max Power is limited to 1000W.) Those without number plate are limited to max 500W.

  • @RedWingsninetyone

    I will say that I believe road bikes are faster for the same amount of effort due to less rolling resistance. That being said, for my type of riding, I prefer my gravel bike. I'm not going to worry if I hit a small patch of rocks or gravel vs road tires. And that all being said, if I'm really worried about it, I can always throw road tires on my gravel bike. But I never do.
    Edit: yes, I know CX and gravel bikes different slightly, but they're very similar.

    I think you have a very good condition, the bike doesn't mean how good you are, I also often outpass road cyclists with my mountain bike (14kg without the 2x1L water bottles and some equipment). :)
    What model of cyclocross do you ride with and what tires are on ?

  • @AndrewFredericia
    @AndrewFredericia 5 лет назад

    I ride a CX bike on the road. The major disadvantage is that you get used to pedaling through corners, which you can't do on a road bike. So the day I switch back might be dangerous.

    I love my CX bike, but, but whether it is as good as mtb on the trails or not depends a lot on the trails. CX bike can go faster on smooth hard packed trails. Alas, here in San Diego, there aren't a lot of that around (unless you go on fire roads, which really aren't trails at all). I'm always lagging behind my mtb friends when it gets nasty steep and loose, and when it gets very pebbly or sandy (some CX'ers can still go pretty fast thru bumpy stuff, but then they're more willing to pay for frequent bike repairs than I do).

      Yes, but only if there is enough clearance for the tires. Also there should be disc or v-brakes

      @@kingprone7846 Wider tires slow you down though. If you were to put, say, continental ride tour wire 700c x 32mm tires on your cyclocross, I'm sure the speed difference would increase.

    you must compare with a powermeter, yourself on the roadike and yourself on the cyclocross bike. I can imagine the extra versatility might count for more on average, but surely the road bike will win on the terrain it's designed for
