@@mqw.4377 It’s not perfect, but we created this system deliberately to have a lot of moving parts.
That can look like pure chaos and anarchy especially for an outsider used to a more monolithic and centralized power and when people tend to be hyperbolic with their opinions. When really, it just gets kind of messy and frustrating but not like, total societal collapse.

Legitimately accurate comment, Eagles would have 100% eaten the hobbits and taken the ring but could also be convinced to do minimal effort heroics after all the important shit was done. LotR eagles are "good" but arrogant, vicious, greedy and VERY dangerous.

A couple turns earlier I noticed a lot of party members were sort of drifting to other locations of combat, while J'r'eh'mi was still fighting on the deck, and thought to myself "I'm going to be at least a LITTLE disappointed if he doesn't end up at the wheel for at least a round". Wish granted!
I love how leiland is the personification of murphy's law. He always succeeds unsuccessfully
He is an actual terrifying leader of the dread armies embued with incredible magic of the nine hells who should succeed in everything he does, but the universe (aka the dice and the LOTR analogy) insist he must actually work hard for the privilege of not dying.
Isn't Murphys Law that "if something bad can happen, it will happen" and not necessarily that you will succeed upwards like a British Conservative cabinet minister.

Somehow it seems to fit with him being the only one with that salt-of-the-earth yet easygoing personality without any psychological hangups. I mean, a little overly fond of mutants and aberrations, but that just adds to his charm.
I love the Gaseous Form move. I'm watching these for the first time and in Fantasy High, by the final battle I was kind of wondering why they didn't really have any consumables or anything to get an extra boost for the fight. Very nice to see Sokhbarr came prepared!

honestly i had the feeling Matt wasn't really enjoying it. I fully understand him, I'm known for my bad luck when it comes to literally any game (5 nat1s in a row on a d20, etc.). It's really not fun when you never get to do anything because dice or cards are severely against you.
But still, really sad to see Matt internally suffering for at least half this epidode. Falling to his death would have allowed him to stop playing, that was the only reason for that grapple and "cut the chain"
@@XpVersusVista I have heard a lot about Matt Mercer being great on _Critical Role_ and seen him on _Um, Actually_ but this is my first time actually watching him do D&D. My sense is he tends to be a bit less naturally bubbly & jokey than the CH performer other cast members, but doesn't necessarily mean he's not having fun, so role playing his character just being constantly short-shrifted (socially + luck of the dice) might make it seem like MATT's annoyed when it's just LELAND. But, I really don't know him enough to tell between "annoyed and letting that fuel his role play" vs "role playing well and that making him seem annoyed".
I really, really don't think someone who is literally a professional D&D player & DM would go to the extreme of making a game suggestion just to get out of the game though.

Yup. My husband and I have been playing the same campaign now for 4 years and we are ALWAYS eating at some point, even if we only have time for an hour or two of gameplay.
After watching pretty much everything of CritRole, it is oddly satisfying seeing Matt's character being beaten up in so many ways across these episodes.

I like how the "bad guys" are supposed to be scary, but they are just as silly as us "good guys" I love it so much. I feel for Matt, it was not a good campaign for him
It was a great campaign for Matt. Amazing role playing opportunities and he ran with all of them.
Leiland has the best story arc in the campaign. Matt's doing just fine.
Things don't have to go well for a character for it to be a great experience for a player and the table.
As Matt put it himself when talking about his awful rolls, "this is a gift"
You should check out CR's Doom Eternal one shot. It has a very similar vibe. The PC's are all evil monsters, but total goofballs whenever the good guys aren't watching.

I have a whole lotta love - all my love, in fact - for that plan. That would prevent the goblin craft from climbing, which would allow our heroes to take a stairway to the heavens. It might also leave those enemies both dazed and confused and suffering from a communication breakdown (a real heartbreaker for them); the heroes could then ramble on over the hills and far away, then hop to the misty mountains in a night flight. To keep warm in those high altitudes, though, they might have to don kashmir sweaters or eat some warm custard pie. Maybe they could go to California or the ocean instead, though in an environment with too much moisture, they'd look like fools in the rain, especially if the levee breaks. I mean, good times and bad times, right?

I love the good DM nods Matt gives to Brennan every once in a while when Brennan does something cool or allows something cool to happen in the game.
He really is a fantastic DM. I watch a lot of D&D...and DM 3x a week...and hes hilarious and on the ball, friggin love it. Excellent vocabulary and "yes and". Im taking notes!

@@AmITheAH Funnily enough, it shouldn’t have worked. Matt later revealed his nat 20 totaled 22 with modifiers. Still wouldn’t have topped the 29, so Brennan’s fudging did in fact come in for him
@TheGhostlyIsaiah It’s true this is a common house rule, but it IS a house rule since rules as written critical 20’s only apply on attack rolls, not ability checks, which was the case here. Brennan runs his table for maximum dramatic and comedic effect, which is great for our viewer entertainment, but ultimately for the rules lawyers out there the decision ultimately came down to Brennan’s fudging/houseruling and not rules as written.

@@michaelcarney4220 And that's how your players can justify anything on a nat 20 and disrupt any sense of balance in your game. I mean, if it's a minor outcome or the difference is minimal, it's alright. But if the gnome is arm wrestling the goliath and he gets a nat20 vs the goliath nat19, it would be stupid to say the gnome won.
The rule of cool is still my #1 rule. But to say all nat20 are succeses is wrong in my opinion.

God i feel so bad for Matt, Leiland deserves a win. Especially since he honestly contributes so much to combat, he deals a lot of damage but never get to look good.
I am highly invested in the Vingory and Lieand. Just the way the others always yell out "Oh, Lieland" at 1:13:40 is really amusing to me. It's almost cheerful aggression, which is fun.
This entire campaign is a rollercoaster. I don't want to cheer for the good guys because they are obviously selfish, stupid, batshit insane, and non-relatable. But I do not want to cheer for the bad guys because they are obviously Selfish, stupid, batshit insane, but somewhat relatable.
The Gamemaster is doing a phenomenal job. The players are also all fantastic and really contributing. This has been a thrill!
I love that the villians, who are pretty inconsistent on general villainy---they killed Avarnash, but Leiland is concerned with child labor, and they are one hundred percent allied with sauron, but Sohkbarr just really cares about monsters---these guys. These guys are trying to get the eagles to unionize. And they're fucking succeeding.

Okay, this was the most spellbinding battle I've ever seen in a D&D game. So much chaos, so much wild energy, the battle literally changed every turn, so unpredictable and still somehow balanced and fair. What a master display!

From what I can tell, the nat 20 would have still worked with their rules. That said, I love that he fudged the roll. Matt had been rolling terribly and he was clearly a little disappointed and upset about the cold streak he was on. Plus, his decision made it far more dramatic and allowed for a truly awesome moment with Matt’s character!

@@SciFiPhiChiPsi I remember reading the argument for why that should be the case for attack rolls but not skill checks, that if you're just not capable of a thing you can't just get lucky like you could with the proverbial stone that slays the giant. And, it makes sense, mostly. But, once the campaign is larger than life enough, it does start to feel kind of lame - somewhere around level 5-10 it becomes "if I'm powerful enough to fight demons and young dragons at this point, X insane supernatural feat should have at least a SLIM chance of success, regardless of if I've trained for it/conceived of it ever before".

I love how the dice roleplay sometimes too. Any other time Markus has fought, he's been so good and has such flare but against his brother he's struggling a bit cuz he's piloting the ship, worrying about his friends, and is flustered by the sudden arrival of his sworn enemy
So does Brennan just have a truly terrifying amount of tea honey and lemon in his house or does he not give a single fuck about the damage all these voices do to his vocal cords

Convince me that Matt’s dice aren’t loaded to get bad rolls. Every time I’ve seen him play (this and unDeadwood) he rolls terribly.
Welcome to being a DM who rarely gets to be a player. And he hasn't had that many bad rolls in this campaign, he just spent one episode soloing a halfling with the stats of a storm giant, so it seemed worse than it was.
As a DM of like 5 years who finally gets to play regularly, I can confirm that I roll fine as a DM and like complete shit while playing

I love the character development in this series.
EDIT: there's also the case of how all their characters are evil and have an absolute disregard for each other during battle. Many, many times this episode they throw people off the boat, teammates and trees mostly.
Except for Lilith, who for the greater part of the battle just sat up there and tried to help her friends out as much as possible, she does the whole motherly thing perfectly.
