    Warfield for Phipps. Homer Jones for Ron Johnson. The decline of Bill Nelsen. Terrible moves. The beginning of the end. Amazing veteran depth kept this team alive for a further 3 years and nearly defeated the unbeatable Miami Dolphins in the 72 playoffs, There was still great reserves of strength, Phipps even showed positive signs of development along with an improving defense for a while but the general trend was downward for the Browns.

      The veterans were the last holdovers from the Paul Brown era....once those players retired or were traded, Modell's lack of football expertise in his front office hirings revealed the organizational weaknesses that weren't rectified until Ernie Accorse became GM in the early 80's.

    They used to have games that looked like wars with the physical Cardinals in the 60s, but in the new division, they had to contend with the emerging Bengals, who won a division title in only three years of existence, then it really heated up with the Steelers in the 70s, who would dominate the AFC Central.

    • @DNSKansas
      @DNSKansas 3 года назад

      Honestly, the three newest NFL teams--Saints, Falcons and Vikings--should have been moved to the AFC. The Browns could have been in a division with the Lions, Steelers, Bears and Packers (Redskins, Colts, Eagles, Giants; 49ers, Rams, Cowboys, Cardinals)

    A blunder for Modell to make the jump to the AFL/AFC at the merger. He was certainly paid off handsomely by the league (with the Steelers and Colts) to do so as the conferences had to be even. The rivalries with all of the other old-line NFL clubs were put on the back burner and rekindled only every few years with the realignment.

    • @robertsprouse9282
      @robertsprouse9282 5 лет назад +1

      Pitt went to the AFC because of the rivalry with the Browns. But, it was no coincidence that other than expansion teams in the 1960's, the league's two youngest clubs in terms of their establishment, were asked to go.
      One thing that people not around back then just cannot fathom today, but it was true, was how the AFC was looked at as a different league, when it was just another conference. It took awhile before that went away. There initially was an ALL AFC ALL PRO TEAM selected by the UPI AND AP AND FOOTBALL WRITERS, with AFC PLAYER OF THE YEAR, ROOKIE OF THE YEAR, DEFENSIVE PLAYER..and Coach of the Year..
      It took until the late '70's before all that was scrapped.

    • @howardcosell2022
      @howardcosell2022 3 года назад

      Vikings couldn't go because of their established rivalries with Green Bay, Detroit, and Chicago. The shrewd Tex Schramm brokered a deal to remain in the NFC and compete in the major media markets of DC, New York, Philadelphia

    In 1970, you could absolutely have looked back on Skorich’s tenure with the Eagles and predicted his future: presiding over a consistent and inevitable decline of a proud franchise, with that decline briefly delayed by the efforts of the quality squad he initially inherited. Skorich might have been a great guy for all I know, but history shows he was a bad head coach. It took many years for both the Eagles and the Browns to recover from his coaching tenures.

    Nelsen had a decent arm but he was brittle in both body and mind. This is a longer version than the copy I have . I thought the Browns put out an abbrevated version in 1970 due to thier disapointing year. Thanks again Comrade ! i also notice 1970 was the year NFL Films started using the phrase "they played a perfect football game." Theres no such thing.

      @@frederickkruse4815, isn't it fun to make allegations that are never backed up. Since he provided the evidence himself, the 'backing up' we can safely say, he is either gone from this earth, does not read responses to his quasi-genius posts for a variety of possible reasons, or is just so much hot air. And, we can back it up.
      Nelsen was a good qb who just could not shake injuries and he made a mistake going to the WFL. He also helped turn Doug Williams into a decent NFL QB, as later on he coached with T.Bay in their early years under his old head coach at USC, JOHN MC KAY.
      He was a guy who constantly played with pain, and yet kept coming back for more. Unless this detractor of his has evidence, Nelsen showed himself to be a bulldog well before there was a dogpound in Cleveland.
      YEP.
