I love that since the only thing they are exposed to as innies is the Kier dogma, this cheesy self-help book (albeit with some actually good advice in there) comes off as incredibly enlightening.
@@DystopianUtopia8 I don't think he is shallow, there are plenty of profound ideas squeezed in there, but definitely Ricken's delivery is super super high on the cheesometer lol
The concept of Mark’s outie finding Ricken pretentious or cringy but his innie finding him revelatory and inspiring because he doesn’t have anything to compare it to from the outside world really is brilliant. There are a good few layers in that.
I really appreciate that Ricken occasionally stumbles upon keen insights in a sea of rambling thoughts, like any self-help book that overestimates its own expertise
What an amazing book... So, so deep. Probably some of the funniest bits of the show. Especially because the innies have never read anything like this before and have no frame of reference.
You forgot the best line. When the severed group meets in the supply closet, just before they go to enact their plan, Mark reads a passage from the book to inspire everyone. “Your boss may own the clock that taunts you from the wall, but my friends, the hour is yours.” Honestly, a really good line. 👍
I am in absolute awe of whoever wrote the excerpts from The You You Are (if it wasn't Dan Erickson). The self-helper tone of ego ("it wasn't me who was wrong, but _literature itself_"), banality (the 'camaraderie' bit in particular) and occasional flashes of genuine meaningfulness is utterly note-perfect.
The book is a genius plot device with its bright Orange cover heavily transitioning against the Blue surroundings of Lumon. This isn’t meant to be a genius self-help book, it’s meant to feel like you’re reading your best mates final major project, but is what adds to its charm. In the final episode of season 1 we finally see Ricken open up about his own self doubts and insecurities and in a beautifully full circle scene innie Mark tells him that it changed his life, and for someone like Ricken that had to mean so much, and is so ironic considering outie Mark doesn’t seem to particularly care for Ricken.
I love how it goes from brilliant and insightful in one moment to completely ridiculous in the next. Bullies - brilliant. Your job needs you - fantastic. Robots are metal - 😁 It will make the war more meaningful - 🤣😆😂
I have a theory that the childlike absurdity of Ricken and his friends mirrors the childlike absurdity of the innies and their theories about other departments, seeming to indicate they're also Severed people. There are clues in episode one when they don't seem to know basic history and say they live in a post-food world but in the next scene Mark's sister is making him a sandwich. So we know food exists, but do they 'not eat' or do they not remember eating?
this stupid self help book joke works so well when you realise that these poor severed people have never read an actual book other than the ones limon gives them. So what is on the outside world a dubious and tedious book, becomes within the confines of lumon a revolutionary tool to break free from control and oppression. This show is so well written it’s amazing, they literally made Ricken into an accidental bumbling Karl Marx lmao.

“It is not me that was wrong, but literature itself.” 😂
Its ironic because in the world of the innys his words are literally true 😂
So amazing. Condems all literature because he is so cheesy and shallow and his books don't sell. 😅

I actually really liked the “They cannot crucify you if your hand is in a fist.” quote.
Problem is that crucifixions were most likely done through the wrists. A fist wouldn't do much to stop that.

They must have had so much fun writing that book. The part about "camaraderie" was hilarious.
What separates man from machine is that machines cannot think for themselves. Also, they are made of metal, whereas man is made of skin.

Apparently it was him! He says he wrote several pages...
Ricken was always based as hell. The show did a bait and switch where they presented a hokey goober, then delivered a fantastic mentor.
He just seems like a genuine guy.
He is definitely still a goober lmao, theyre just in a cult with no other media
Page 197 Slaps !!
📖 I’d buy this book and read it for the sheer curiosity if it were published for real.
You may be in luck! The show creator has indicated something is in the works🤞

I love that the I in the DESTINY acrostic poem actually stands for eyes.
Ricken is the anti-Kier. I hope they build more on his role in later seasons

Some might find his writing and advice cheesy or corny but like anything else in the world, it works for someone out there, and that's what matters!

they spoke of a non food based dinner ritual. like instead of eating you're probably doing something else
Ricken Hale the Karl Marx of the severed floor.
Ricken gale may be the greatest author of all time. I hope Ben stiller or one of the cast members writes full version of the book.

This was an actual tactic used by communists, the undertones in the show are already pretty obvious anyway.
