BG Music:
Siouxsie is legitimately the queen of goth, she has been around since the late 70s. At one time Robert Smith of The Cure was in this band as well. Together with Cure, Bauhaus and The Sisters of Mercy they're probably England's most famous gothic rock act from the 80s. Siouxsie is in many ways a trailblazer and pioneer for female singers in early alternative rock and the sound of Siouxsie and the Banshees inspired many artists (ie. Radiohead, PJ Harvey, The Smiths or Slowdive), some of their songs got covered by artists like Massive Attack, Jeff Buckley, Tricky, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Faith No More, LCD Soundsystem or The Weeknd. Not bad, I'd say.
Thomas Dolby played synths for her at one time as well. Patricia Morrison is the Godmother of Goth though. She started that look prior to Siouxsie while playing bass for The Bags ( Alice Bags ) as Pat Bags, and then with The Gun Club, before she joined Sisters of Mercy and later The Damned with her husband Dave Vanian.
@@wolf762x51- Really? TD played with Siouxsie? I know he played with/wrote for Lena Lovitch but I never knew about Siouxsie.
@@johnstjohn6658 I checked Dolby's credits on discogs, he's not listed as a musician on any release by Siouxsie and the Banshees, if ever then only live as a session musician, but there's no record about that to be found either. I almost assume that Charles mistook Siouxsie with Lene Lovich. He's actually listed as keyboardist for Lovich's "Live From New York At Studio 54" concert DVD from 2007.
She hanged around with Johnny rotten Sex Pistols groupie
@@danielamend4423 Yes, I know. She also took part in that infamous interview piece the Pistols gave on The Grundy Show in 1976 in which Steve Jones called Bill Grundy "a fucking rotter" on live tv which was a scandal back in those days. You can find that clip here on youtube as well.
Siouxsie visited Pompei and had a deeply moving experience there. "Water was running. Children were running. You were running out of time." I LOVE this song. It's like she had a spiritual connection to the victims of the volcano.
Even the line "Were you praying at the Lares' shrine?" has significant meaning.
"Lares are household gods that were believed to be the guardians and protectors of the house. Many of the wall paintings found in Pompeii depicted the Lares as youthful people engaged in dance. Lares were often painted in pairs surrounding the genius, which was the spirit of the head of the house."
Everything about the song is very much about the tragedy which befell the city of Pompeii.
"Your former glories and all the stories
Dragged and washed with eager hands"
That is all that we have now, former glories, and old stories being dragged out and washed with the eager hands of archeologist trying to recreate the past.
It inspires in me introspection about how the greatest of civilizations all fall eventually. About how precarious our position is. Your infrastructure is bringing water, your kids are out playing in the yard, maybe you're even thanking your personal god (Lares) that things are working so well, then in a moment, it's all wiped out. No matter how comfortable we are, what big shots we think we are, the entire life we know can be one volcano eruption or fire or jumbo jet crash away from oblivion. Even in "paradise" as in the recent sad case of Lahaina, HI
I love that you are reacting to her! Please do her song “Kiss Them For Me” so iconic!!!!
Please, yes!
My favorite song by Siouxie!
🥰😎
Any song she has ever recorded.
Love that one, too!
Her ability to produce songs original yet the from the same mould time after time, means she remains still five decades later, the queen. Even “Forever” from poorly received the rapture album, tears the hearts strings in an aching beauty of layer upon layer of various strings & distortion ❤❤❤❤
Siouxsie Sioux is a Goddess of awkward anti-cool. Pure dangerous.
Also, this song is even more cool if you keep in mind that it's inspired by the events of 79 AD in the Bay of Naples, the destruction of Pompeii and Herculaneum.
Nothing awkward about her. And she’s extremely cool🤷🏽♀️
Water was running, children were running
You were running out of time
Under the mountain, a golden fountain
Were you praying at the Lares' shrine?
But, whoa, oh, your city lies in dust, my friend
Whoa, oh, your city lies in dust, my friend
We found you hiding, we found you lying
Choking on the dirt and sand
Your former glories and all the stories
Dragged and washed with eager hands
But, whoa, oh, your city lies in dust, my friend
Whoa, oh, your city lies in dust, my friend
Your city lies in dust
Water was running, children were running
We found you hiding, we found you lying
Water was running, children were running
We found you hiding, we found you lying
Your city lies in dust, my friend
Whoa, oh, your city lies in dust, my friend
Hot and burning in your nostrils
Pouring down your gaping mouth
Your molten bodies, blanket of cinders
Caught in the throes, and
Whoa, oh, your city lies in dust, my friend
Whoa, oh, your city lies in dust, my friend
Whoa, oh, your city lies in dust, my friend
Whoa, oh, your city lies in dust, my friend
Your city lies in dust, my friend
Whoa, oh, your city lies in dust, my friend
Whoa, oh, your city lies in dust
praying at the Lares' shrine?
a Lares is a Roman household god/ess. It literally belongs to the house, protects the family.
A banshee in Irish folklore is a female spirit who roams the forest unseen. She screams, wails, and shrieks when something bad is about to happen. She does not go fast or attack anyone. She is not threatening in and of herself. She remains unseen.
That was really inspired by a visit to Pompeii," frontwoman Siouxsie Sioux told Creem. "There's quite a lot of tourism there, but the place itself transcends all that. You can think you're the only person there. It's quite immense, and at the end of the day, seeing the petrified bodies, it had a strong effect on me. The song was written, the music was written, when we got back from Italy, I wrote the lyrics. It was dedicated to one of the petrified bodies. It almost looked as if there was someone underneath this kind of plaster cover. I almost expected it to get up and move."
Even now they are still discovering bodies and artefacts in Pompeii.
It is her Kashmir.
Imagine that roman person knowing that there will be a song about him/her written 2000 years later.
Yes Brad, Siouxsie Sue is always "Creepy and Dramatic".........THE PERFECT WOMAN
Siouxsie SIOUX, not Sue.
I think Brad doesn't get this kinda music at all but Lex is still open-minded.
Siouxie what now !!!
The British Morticia... ;)
One of the best bands from the 80's. I love Siouxsie and the Banshees.
Siouxsie is great!!!! Please do more like Dazzle, Kiss Them For Me, Israel, Spellbound....
Hard to believe from her music she was on the infamous Bill Grundy interview with the Sex Pistols. She did a fantastic version of Bob Dylans Wheels on fire
And an equally fantastic version of Iggy Pop's The Passenger on that very same album
She thought she was covering Julie Driscoll. She doesn't like Bob. This is firsthand info.
Chorus is " Ohhhh-uhh, oooo.. Oh your Cities lie in Du- usst.." something to that effect. Very compelling tune.. their music is spellbinding..
We love Siouxsie in the UK the queen of punk. Classic track.
This is my favorite siouxsie song. My neice was named after her.
I saw them perform live once in the '80s at the late, great Club Lingerie on Sunset Blvd in Hollywood.
This is a lot more typical of their sound than Peek a Boo.
Love Siouxsie and the Banshees! I went through my goth phase during this time. You got to hear "Spellbound". Again this one is different than any other song.
I love Siouxsie and actually saw them at the very first Lollapalooza. For a band that has a bit of the same vibe, and also some great songs. check out Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Heads Will Roll (and no it's not some obscure song, it has 72m views).
If you are commenting about Siouxsie, come to the streams. We need more voters to get bands like Siouxsie and the Banshees played.
"The last beat of my heart" is mandatory
I remember the 80s as a post disco dance revolution , everybody had to up their game
“Happy house” or “Arabian Knights” are great songs ❤
🇬🇧 Probably the biggest Goth star, the most influential for sure. Whole new rock branches grew under the influence of Siouxie and The Banshees
This one is one of the best for me along with Israel and Spelbound🇬🇧
One of the most unique incredible women of the 20th Century! Please react to 'Christine' next :)
Yay! She's frickin amazing! One of my all time top favorite band/ singers. Great season for Spellbound and Fear!
Debbie Harry, Siouxsie & PJ Harvey 3 ladies who never compromised, the queens of music
Debbie?
@@jjmencap7015 Blondie
Awesome post-punk, Gothic new wave, darkwave band! "Spellbound ", Hong Kong Garden", "Christine" are next videos to see from them. 🌙 🎃 🧛♂️ 🦇
I like passenger too!
Great opening rhythm! It has a super 80s vibe. Nice upload!
Maynard James Keenan said she was a huge influence on his singing style and the way he approaches melodies
Their cover of the Beatles Dear Prudence is my favourite cover of all time. Spellbound is their best tune IMO.
Fantastic taste! I agree on both of those fronts.
Check out Siouxsie And the Banshees cover of 'Dear Prudence'. Originally by The Beatles, she does a great job
The woman Madonna was always ripping off...
OH your city lies in dust, my friend. Im so Glad I saw them 2 times in my life and on this tour. Lollapalooza year 1.
Great song, great band! You must go to their post punk days. Robert Smith from the cure use to be their guitarist for a spell.
and Sid Vicious on drums very early on too lol
Tuuuuuune! One of my fave tunes from the 80's! Siouxsie 🤩
Happy House, Christine, Spellbound, Israel, and my favorite Dazzle - so many great songs from Siouxsie.
But yeah, Peek-a-boo is the wrong song to start with for the band.
One must experience the extreme stage antics of Wendy O Williams of "The Plasmatics". BUTCHER BABY is a good one for starters but it is essential the video feature Wendy in action, not just lyrics.
One of my faves. Solid Goth / New Wave-ish number.
still waiting for you guys to explore the multi album back catalogue of "THETHE'
A great band indeed, but Budgie's creative drumming shouldn't be overlooked. He contributed so much.
Listen to the early stuff, the punk origins of proto-Goth [before it became a fashion], along with some aspects of Black Sabbath and Nina Hagen.
This is more poppy Siouxsie, not a bad thing. Gotta go back further into the catalog to get to the truly gothy stuff, Juju/Kaleidoscope etc.
One of the original goth bands. I still haven't really gotten into them much yet, but I have a tremendous respect for them, and am still scratching the surface of goth myself.
My favorite Siouxsie And The Banshees song by far (to be fair, I'm not the biggest S&tB fan).
This is a bit closer to their REAL sound. I think "Spellbound" or "Candyman" woud be the perfect introduction to their amazing gothic music!
I’m not sure what yin are trying to say by their REAL sound? Are you saying that they also have a FAKE sound?
@@fordhouse8b If you know the band you know what I'm talking about. Their singles doesn't represent the sound of their albums. Perfect example is Cities in Dust on Tinderbox, which is a cool song but the rest of the album is an eery gothic rock beast.
@@Iluvthosetightp Then the word you are looking for is something like typical, quintessential, characteristic, representative, expected, etc. Not REAL.
@@fordhouse8b Ok dude whatever
I would have to say Christine or Arabian Nights. Just re-listening to Arabian Nights, found a theft from The Umbrella Academy. "I heard a rumor..."
Brad & Lex, May I humbly suggest that you guys have a listen to Oingo Boingo's "Dead Man's Party. If You enjoyed Siouxsie, You'll like them...
Please listen to their song “The Last Beat Of My Heart”, it’s hauntingly beautiful.
More Siouxsie please:
Kiss them for me
Dear Prudence
The passenger
Face to face
Wife here..,WOW..This was soooo Amazing back in the day..Still is!!
The Alt rock queen, or punk goth queen, anyway, she’s so damn good
Man!
You guys finally listen to my favourite Siouxsie song, and I missed it!
Love these guys so much, and this is a jam 100%
I actually saw them in Detroit 1986
react to Wagakki Band- 焔 (Homura)
Brad got this one right...she is singing about the discovery of Pompeii after the Mt. Vesuvius eruption of 79 A.D. Aesome song.
Great reaction. More Banshees. Thanks
Great band, check out their debut single “Hong Kong Garden” it reached number 7 in the UK charts
OHHHHHHH YEAHHHHHHHHHHHH
It's Really Good New Wave !!!!!!!! 👍🏻👍🏼👍🏿👍🏽👍🏻👍🏼👍🏼👍🏿👍🏽
GOD BLESS YOU BRAD & LEX !!!!!!!!!!
I thought was Dead or Alive.
I don't normally do fan worship but for Siouxsie I make an exception.
Considering the event that is happening in a weeks time, you should listen to the Banshees song “Halloween”.It’s a banger and is played at the end of the animated film “Monster House”.
You gotta listen to “Dazzle”. That one is beautifully sonic.
Earlier stuff is arguably "better" - Hong Kong Garden, Christine, Happy House, Israel. At least to me. YMMV
Israel.israel.christine.christine
And the batman soundtrack song
I'm requesting "Face to Face" from Siouxsie...
Superb band, one of the original punk bands. Nocturne with Mr. Robert Smith must be one of the best live shows from the period - FYI Japan-Oil on Canvas live is something to behold too. Wonderful time for music.
Exactly Brad it's about Pompeii. I think you should try 'Kiss them for me' or 'Israel' next.
By the time Cities in dust & Peek a Boo came out anybody who was into S&B when they originally came out in the late 70s had stopped listening
Waaaay to commercial!!!
I know when them I thought Oh damn the Goth neighbor has been completely gentrified🤮
Alright, more Siouxsie, goth, post-punk era!
This for me is quintessential high-school 80s along with Cure, early New Order and Bauhaus.
Sioxsie is the female prototype that's spawned the goth movement
Check out “kiss them for me”.
Probably my favorite Siouxsie song. Absolutely love Cities in Dust!!!
Yesss! Now do Hong Kong Garden!
This is my favorite Siouxsie and The Banshees songs. Some other favorites are: 1) Nicotine, 2) Halloween, 3) Godzilla (under the group The Creatures), and 4) Like a Swan (solo).
"Nicotine Stain" and "Into A Swan"
@@slummingtart Thanks. I usually edit before I send but this time I slipped up.
Heard that on SiriusXM the other day. I've never heard it before and I really liked it.
I love their early stuff, but their late 80’s was the most creative.. With songs like “Killing Jar”.. Movies like Out of Bounds (Cities in Dust was in it), Some Kind of Wonderful, and The Lost Boys (OST was a big deal) were always on the Betamax/VHS player lol..
PJ Harvey - Sheela Na Gig
I've always liked this one, partially because I am so interested in the Pompeii story. The drumming is great in this song.
Budgie is one of the most virtuosic drummers ever. His arrangements are true art.
it's good your listening to this now as opposed to much earlier in your journey. you have to have a sense of what mainstream music was like at the time to understand why this is called "alternative".
Best Siouxsie and the Banshee’s song: Stargazer.
Thanks for doing this, Brad & Lex! This is one of my favorite 1981 jams! Love me some Siouxsie!
YAAAAAS! FINALLY!
Such a classic song. You should check out there song Hong Kong Garden another classic.
The Psychedelic Furs - The Ghost in You
Too esoteric? Try Slow Dive or Tenant by SnTB.
They have some great tra
The Banshees are one of my favourite bands and this track is a classic. I’d love to see you reacting to a slightly more obscure track called “Dazzle”. It’s a much more musical track, and had Robert Smith from the cure on guitar/keyboards.
I love that song!
Dazzle is great. Swimming Horses is another one I love from that Robert Smith in the Banshees period.
@@zoeherriot I was just going to suggest Swimming Horses.
She does a lot of sound tracks and tv shows videos music
*Siouxsie And The Banshees - The Passenger*
I loved siouxsie back in my punk goth time in the 80s
Siouxsie is the best.
Do the Banshees song - Swimming Horses!
Candyman and The Sweetest Chill from the same album are masterpieces. Hell, this whole album is perfect. Also since it is October you need to check out Scarecrow and Turn to stone from Peepshow. Please do it.
Siouxsie & The Banshees are so awesome! I hope you'll keep checking out more of their songs and exploring them. I enjoy watching your reactions to them.
This song came out just one year after Sting's "Russians." In general, there was a heightened tension about war between NATO and Russia. While Siouxsie was singing about Pompeii, I'm sure to some extent she was drawing a parallel to the modern threat of nuclear war.
Thanks for this reaction, sincerely.
Her voice reminds me of Patti Smith !
Mad eye screamer.....more Siouxsie😈
Hey you two! Since Halloween is around the corner, you should do a reaction for McKenna Grace "Haunted House" she was a young actress in Ghostbusters Afterlife and Fuller House and has a great vocal talent! I think you two would enjoy it. Have a Happy Halloween!!!
The Mission
Goth funk. One of the best songs ever
It is about Pompeii. Good guess
