That DC paper looks exactly like the Canson Fanboy boards, with W&N Series 7 the bristles are very drying because they changed hair quality and their brushes were never the same again, I still have an old W&N S7 #3 and the flow is much better. People always say it's the artist and not the tools that matter but I found that I only started to make a ton of progress once I got the tools that enable me to make the lines that I want. If it's the same as the DC boards the back should be much smoother but still matte so the lines will brake if the ink is too dense.
all 100% true. thank you for your comment!! The tools DO in fact matter and this video is proof of that. So it's always good to step back and try to assess what is going on and if it can maybe be addressed.
all my W & N brushes are older brushes (like old new stock if that makes sense) so I have the "good" ones...not what they are doing now. I bought I think 4 dozen at the end of the good run/
I bought a few in 2015-16 to see how they were now and the quality was still too grainy, it's like using a brush meant for oils but with watercolors, exactly like your demo here so it's good to show the problems comic artists may face and how to solve them. I have no idea how there are artists like Tradd Moore that used them and make very long and smooth lines with them, maybe it's the combination of ink and paper they use that makes it overcome the friction of the brush bristles on the paper texture. I found the French brushes to not have this drying quality so I use them instead but the control and sharpness of (a good) W&N brush is unique.
I love the video! I can't wait for the next video! I used to have sketchbooks full of ink lines like that for practice. Thanks for always helping us out!
Dude! Another great video! Yeah, DC paper is a grab bag of quality. A few (actually many) years ago, DC's "smooth" was that ultra plate bristol and really great to work on. I found that Strathmore made DC paper and bought a huge stock of the Strathmore Plate 500(?) Series that was the same quality. I've been back and forth with Strathmore for years trying to get that same stock again when I ran out but they said they've changed vendor and they can't make that sweet smooth plate anymore. Strathmore only has the toothy smooth stuff now. I'm so sad. That's part of the reason I've kind of switched over to digital even though I've been so resistant to the technology for so long. Keep it up, bro - you're my favorite inker!
You guys may want to get your hands on some Scharff 3000 series brushes. I bought three of them (#2, #3) years ago and they've held their points and were quality like the W&N brushes were back in the day. The Dick Blick Masterstroke brushes are nice as well. I still have my old W&N brushes and use those often too, haven't tried out the new ones but the last few I've bought have not held up and I can't get them to keep a point.
allgoldproductions I've heard of them but never tried them. I honestly don't get too experimental with my tools. But I tend to buy a lot of different art supplies though. I'll check them out. thanks
If you don't like Strathmore bristol; Borden & Riley Paris Bleedproof Paper is a great solution. Brush strokes will complete the whole way and it has zero problem with nibs and Rapidograph. It has a plate surface.
BRB must find a photo of this dude to see why the hands don't match the voice at all. Back. OK, he looks nothing like Werner Herzog. The hands must be an anomaly, or maybe he was in a fire at a sea park. Cool video, added to my Art & Design playlist. Subscribed and looking forward to seeing more.
Hi! 😊 Sorry if by any chance you talked about this already, at some point, if you did, I didn't catch it! But, quick question if you could help me... Does alcohol (india) ink stain porcelain/ceramic palette? Or does it wipes away like watercolors? I'm about to buy my first inks and don't want to ruin my watercolor palette!
Michael Telles awesome thank you. There's a bit of a learning curve doing these. So I am sure I'll return to these ideas and more again. also when I get editing tools I can splice in close ups and things like that. it will be really cool!
Love these, dude! Have you noticed or are there any differences in right handed or left handed inkers? I only ask because I am a lefty and I noticed the brush strokes rely heavily on the direction that your hand is going. Your content is increasingly getting better, and better every video. So awesome to watch!
Enoch Vaughn what I find is because most times you're working with a variety of pencil lines and directions with that. Meaning what you have actually have to ink. It's probably a pretty even playing field. There's for sure times when I wish that I was left-handed because the lines that I need to do are going the opposite way that my hand actually goes.
Enoch Vaughn Why would it make a difference with which hand you ink? Well, you probably need to mirror the video if you want to copy Richard's motions, but aside from that, I see no difference.
Any tips on storing and caring for your brushes? I have a few and they are starting to splinter and not keeping a point anymore, granted I dont use them that much only to spot my black areas, but I would like to use them more and use them as my primary inking tool. Thanks bro for all of your videos! I look forward to them every time you post a new one! Keep it up!
I think you might be the first brush inking video I've seen where someone actually mentions sharpening the brush. Also I heard Fabriano boards are pretty good and Greg Capullo has been using them. Won't DC allow you to use those?
yeah sorry it was phrased wrong...what I meant was that was the paper I had in bulk here and had been using...it had become more and more apparent the last few weeks..the paper (a new batch I'd been sent) was not so hot. I can theoretically use any paper I want...so I will look into that Fabriano board! thank you.
Great vid, answered a bunch of questions I had about inking. (I’m working on a comic book project completely solo, and inking is definitely my downfall so this comes in real handy!) Any chance you’ll be doing a tutorial on working up textures in ink? Would be awesome to get some insight into when to use hatching, cross hatching, etc when dealing with different materials (i.e. skin, fabric, fur, bark...). Thanks for doing what you do, look forward to see what ya come up with next!
Thanks I’m going to try this for the very first time 😬 if I enjoy it I might do inktober like this, perfect opportunity to learn eh 😀. Did you use waterproof ink? Any recommendations on type of container for the ink? Thanks 😊
Great Video! thanks :D Been drawing since I can remember. But, I just started to use a brush, gotta say I love using it. Although I use one with a cartridge as the handle. Its damn hard to get consistent lines :D. I read somewhere that you have to hold it almost totally Vertical, i find that extremely hard for my hand. When I see you and other Artists here on youtube use a brush, they don't hold it vertical, so I think it might be me doing it wrong, my hand shakes quite a bit when I hold it like that, and it's not comfortable at all xD. sorry for the long comment :) It's nice to see you can make beautiful lines without holding it totally vertical. Gonna start doing that instead.
Hey Rich How do you clean your brush before you switch tools? I sometimes just wanna switch my tools like from a brush to a nib but I can't just leave the brush to dry. Is just swirling it in some water and then leaving it enough? How long can I leave it like that before I do the whole "brush cleaner soap and water" routine?
Flabiano Gonzales I show 3 different brushes. a Raphael 8404 and then 2 are Windsor Newton. One a size 2 the other a size 3. I've found them to be pretty consistent, generally get a good point, and last a long time. Try different brushes and see what you like.
Thank you. I've tried to look for the series 7 brushes but art stores dont carry them, so I usually settle Windsor and Newton Cotman water color brushes and Grumbacher brushes.
Flabiano Gonzales you can order those online. As a for instance one time I bought I think 10 or 20 of them on ebay. Or maybe try Blick art supplies online.
I've been having that same problem with most Strathmore boards. It's been driving me crazy. It's almost like the paper has a wax on it and causes the ink to bead up on the surface of the paper, leaving a blotchy or scratchy line.
I have a concern, you fill the ink brush to the mitaok, then ink and when the ink runs out in the brush, do you wet the brush with water and then fill it with ink again?
You can, but a brush like this one holds more ink, and is very suitable for ink work. i.etsystatic.com/18941274/r/il/1e1274/1813906892/il_1140xN.1813906892_ls76.jpg
Can't you use a dish or something instead of a scrap paper? I feel so bad for the wasted ink. Like a plate, put it at a slant, put some ink on it, then dip and scrape on there or something like that. All the best.
Ummm.....why not just add a few drops of water to a small amount of ink you plan on using that season to make or smooth instead of waiting for a dry brush to dip it in water
'Sometimes it _is_ the tools' is something they should teach in every art school (if they ever actually start teaching anything again).
Yeah true, btw my latest vid is also about the tools. Tools really mater when you're semi pro
This is the kinda shit I love. Learning from a pro. I love brush inking. Atta boy Rich!
John Garren dude thank you so much!!
Yeah I liked how well aware he is about his tools and paper. My latest vid also also about the tools btw
"this brush is bad to the bone" 😂 spoken like a true inker your passion for your craft is great your the best in the business 👍
ink painting is fascinating to do. I do acrylic painting however shifting to ink medium now.
Fantastic video!! Thank you for sharing your knowledge! Can't wait for the next video!
Awesome of you to share techniques Rich!!! I'm glad to see you doing vids again!

thank you....practice for sure will help you get better control and a more deeper connection with the tool...so it's a good idea!
These videos are pure gold!
Hi Richard,
Greetings from Poland! And big thanks for another great video!!!

Just found inks, enjoyed your video. Thank you.
Awesome video, thanks Richard!
Love this. Those Windsor Newton brushes are so expensive...have you found any decent alternatives at all?
Finally to the this point. Wish me luck 💪🏼
Helpful exercises and tips, appreciated!
I liked it!!!!!! Thank you, sir!
Like your style of teaching

Very cool! Off to share this on FB...
VZA wow thanks so much. I really appreciate it!
I improved a lot thanks to you!! Thx bud!!!

as a pro, what do you think of brush pens (pentelkuretake etc) , or water brushes filled with ink?

Thanks for the tip about the paper. I just looked it up and it has great reviews. Thanks.
I ordered a 20 pack of the Fabriano paper...I'll do a demo on it when it arrives and put it to the test!!
I actually ordered some last night myself! I got a 20 pack of the 14X17 so I could cut it down for comic pages.
What is the best size brush🖌️ for drawing ?

Artwork by Christopher Cayco thank you Christopher. :)

You said food,now I'm hungry give me a brush..on rye please.. bye'eeee..

Hey Rich, have you ever found a good brush pen to use if you're at a con or need something thats not messy?
Nice video
Hey Rich

Why a Winsor & Newton Series 7 brush? what makes this particular brush different from other brushes?

What ink brand are u using?
finally the wrong tools!!!!!!my nibsvalways break speedball 102
What brand of ink do youbuse with your brush?
What paper is that?
I have a concern, you fill the ink brush to the mitaok, then ink and when the ink runs out in the brush, do you wet the brush with water and then fill it with ink again?
What paper is that
One question. What ink do you use?
Man I gotta get a better brush. I didn't even know it was possible to get that small of lines!
Any tips for dry brush Master ?
So i can use regular brush on ink?
(( sorry im dumb because i got india ink irl))
What is the difference between india ink and regular ink?
You can, but a brush like this one holds more ink, and is very suitable for ink work.

Can't you use a dish or something instead of a scrap paper? I feel so bad for the wasted ink. Like a plate, put it at a slant, put some ink on it, then dip and scrape on there or something like that. All the best.
what kind of ink tho
You are Indian ?
Ummm.....why not just add a few drops of water to a small amount of ink you plan on using that season to make or smooth instead of waiting for a dry brush to dip it in water
I disliked for that call to action
