It seems as though a lot of the people I've seen do this accent tag have pretty idiosyncratic names for their grandparents that don't appear to be associated with one region or another, so you wouldn't be able to tell where they were from by that question alone. I'm surprised that more of them haven't said "Grandma and Grandpa" for both sets of grandparents, maybe with first names or last names tagged on at the end when they need to distinguish one set of grandparents from the other. Either that or Mammaw and Pappaw if they were from the South. That seems to be kind of the standard for the South, but is slowly being supplanted by the more standard, default "Grandma and Grandpa." My paternal grandfather died before I was born, so I don't really know what I would have called him. I guess I would have defaulted to Pappaw since I called my paternal grandmother Mammaw. She died when I was almost seven. Oddly enough, I have always called my maternal grandparents by their first names. If I understand correctly, this was because my grandmother on that side of the family was so vain about her age that she didn't want to be reminded that she was a grandmother. She must have made peace with it by the time my little cousin came along, though. This cousin is fourteen years younger than me and always called them "Grandma Betty" and "Grandpa Bob," or just Grandma and Grandpa sometimes for short. Then I acquired a set of new step-cousins when she acquired a set of new step-siblings--but the dynamic is definitely different with them than with her, because I was well into adulthood by the time they entered the family. I didn't really pay attention to what they called my grandparents, but that set of grandparents both passed away not long after my uncle's late-in-life second marriage that caused his new wife's kids to be indirectly related to me.
I loved this! You do have a Marylander accent and you are 1000% right, Maryland has a lot of different accents. I always get asked where I’m from when I go out of state.
I am watching this for my phonetics class. You accent is sooo much easier to transcribe in IPA than the New Orleans accent! (Of course, I am from along the southern stretch of the Susquehanna River, so my accent is similar to yours too!) Thanks for the accent tag!
Hey, that’s so cool you came across my video for your class! I’m glad you found it to be more simple. The New Orleans’ accent is much thicker...Thank you for tuning in 😃
I'm from NJ but spent most of my life in Fla. Your accent sounds more northern than Southern. And you use good grammar. I have picked up some things from southerners as you have too. But you sound educated and you speak well, without sounding like a nerd.
Originally from PG county so we have similar accents. My favorite part was when you said the grandparents "ON" my.... You pronounced it oin (to rhyme with coin). I have been teased about the way I say that, as in turn ON the light.
This is all started when your teacher when you're younger has you pronounce words depending on your state you're going to pick up that dialect usually through childhood and two teenage years and early adulthood is where it locks in you will have it the rest of your life unless you take voice training coach acting classes or something it's just how we're brought up and how we're taught in school down south they pronounce words different than up north and Midwest it's crazy I didn't even realize how different other countries languages must sound even though I don't understand them so they all sound the same to me like Spanish and so on this is interesting I want to do some more research on this because I'm been bored LOL
I have some friends from B Moore they sound kinda like us in Chicago. I can’t tell your accent though it was fun though! Take care Da Bears Chi Town! There’s my accent in Chicago we have proof read our writing normally we have a tendency to write how you speak. That’s a challenge my friends and I joke about all the time.
Shay. Money I never really heard the Chicago accent before although I been there once briefly, I will have to look it up because now I’m curious. Thanks for sharing!!
I'm from Upper Marlboro in PG County MD, went to school at Suitland. I don't see a huge difference from there, but everyone didn't have a singular accent either because PG has a good variety- you could have someone sound city, country or a mix all at the same school. I've never really thought we had a different accent, but maybe I can't hear it either lol
Exactly, everyone is mixed up from different cities/counties so you can expect to hear a little bit of everything, but similar trends overall. Thanks for watching!! 😄
So the closer a person lives to the East coast, meaning metropolitan DC or Baltimore area, the more staccato and precise the pronunciation of words occurs. The further away a person gets from those two areas the more southern the accent becomes. Of course, there are many types of Southern accents in Maryland.
Dr_Special_T Ooooo ok interesting! Think I heard of that one before. & when it comes to saying the number “two” I say it proper lol you gotta catch a Baltimore City person for that one 😂
I'm from Northern VA. We have boring accents. I always thought strong MD accents were very interesting. My dad is from there he says tew for two. Or surdeey for Saturday. Or weyensdee for wensday. I probably got it wrong still. I try but I can never get it right. They look at me like I'm crazy lol
Hey, thanks for sharing. I have never heard anyone from Northern VA speak, but now I am curious lol your dad’s accent sounds accurate based on the words you mentioned 😄

As someone who was born and raised in Maryland, I pretty much got the same answers from those questions besides the grandpa and grandma question.
Cool!! Guess I pass as a real Marylander 😅
