- Hélène Grimaud is truly captivating. For many years now, the French pianist has been wowing the classical world with her sensual, intense playing, as well as her unfaltering commitment to making the world a better place. Her broad musical repertoire encompasses not only the more recognizable piano works that allow pianists to demonstrate their brilliance on the world’s stages, but also includes contemporary pieces - such as those by Ukrainian composer Valentin Silvestrov. In addition to music, the star pianist has a passion for wolves, which she wants to see saved from extinction. This portrait reveals Hélène Grimaud as a philosophical, contemplative artistic personality, who has uniquely harmonized her shared loves of music and nature - developing a deep sense of humanity in the process.

Born in 1969 in Aix-en-Provence, France, Hélène Grimaud's career has been in every respect extraordinary. Grimaud only began playing the piano at the age of nine, but by 13 was already studying at the Paris Conservatoire, and soon after winning major prizes. In 1987 - barely ten years later - she attracted widespread acclaim for her debut concert in Tokyo. That same year, Daniel Barenboim invited her to perform in concert with the Orchestre de Paris; her breakthrough as a concert pianist. Ever since, Hélène Grimaud has been one of the most sought-after pianists in the world. She has performed with the Berlin Philharmonic under the baton of Claudio Abbado, and with the New York Philharmonic under the baton of Kurt Masur, amongst numerous other notable engagements. In addition to her career as a concert pianist, Grimaud is renowned for her commitment to wolf preservation. In the 1990s, she founded the Wolf Conservation Center - dedicated to the protection of this endangered species - in upstate New York.

The older she gets, the more beautiful and wiser she becomes.😌🥰
You seem to love her 💘💘💘
@Sandoz-tq7qj What I think is that she was and still is a very attractive woman. Older than before but very beautiful indeed.
Thank you for this glimpse into the life and soul of Helene Grimaud. She is certainly NOT a one dimensional musical artist, playing beautiful piano only. In a word, she is truly a “Renaissance” woman. At 53, I hope she has many, many more years to grace our lives with her musical talent, physical beauty, superb intellect and ecological commitments. Brava Helene!!
Helene Grimaud, the sublime artist and human, is my spirit animal.
(I hope one day she decides to write more books, as her writing is as transcendent as her playing.)
What she is doing with her life inspires me to be a better person. And I just love to watch and listen to her play.
There is no doubt that Hélène has a special talent for interpreting the music of the great romantic composers, but for me her greatest interpretation is that of the Bach-Busoni chaconne for which she has no rivals.
What an incredibly beautiful and brilliant woman she is. Her spirit shines through every aspect of her humanity.
What a wonderful human being ! Her Schumann Piano Concerto and Bach Chaconne are absolute and definitive joys for me
For me as well!!
A great pianist and a person with a good soul and heart, in which a lot of love.Wonderful, interesting film.Thank you very much.
Goddess, pure and simple. Yet so human.
Thank you DW for doing this. She is both one of my two favorite pianists but also such a beautiful human being.
Dear Carlos Estrella, you're welcome 😊 We're happy to hear you enjoyed the video.
💖🌹🌎🌟
Silence is an important musical value. Groupings of notes can define the space between. Helene's phrasing and tempo flow are what I think she ecxels at.
Yes she made everything effortless, u will understand her phrase even without the score that’s how beautiful she is
Music is the true language of the spirit
I met her twice back in the mid 1990's after seeing some of her concerts. I was young and so in love with her. Now she is an icon.
Stunning musician and one of my favorite piano players. I have most her catalogue.
I had a friend who worked with her on her album Water, he said she was just as kind and beautiful on the inside as she was on the out.
She is, isn't she? Thanks for sharing this personal story with us!
Absolutely amazing personality. All the best to her!
Helene is at once an awe-inspiring master and an approachable, disarming human being. Her introspective life is so genuine, and deeply vital to the resources she expresses for the rest of us. I'm wondering if this clip is a portion of the promised 2023 theater release "Between the Notes" documentary . . . ?
Joseph Miller, you may be right. I have been eagerly awaiting the release of this promised film most of this year. Let’s hope that it will be coming soon.
Helene Grimaud is a beautiful person. Being one of the world's greatest living pianists is only part of her life. It's easy to love and fall in love with her. I really admire her creation of the wolf conservatory. She's also a woman who becomes more beautiful with age. Watching her play is fascinating, especially when I see her smile. She's enjoying the music she creates as much as her audience. Why don't I ever meet women like her?
Let only music caress your hearts & never let bad guys win to screw us the joy of life, eternal gratitude gorgeous performers that make our lives a better place, never stop believe in guys ❤🎉❤
HÉLÈNE GRIMAULT MA PIANISTE PRÉFÉRÉE GRANDE ARTISTE ET A LA FOIS SIMPLE UNE TRES BELLE ÂME
I love her. Greetings from Poland.
So much talent in one person! Among her many assets is a precision in spoken language that few can match. Phrases like "react to" come with all the consonants audibly pronounced but no distortions. And as others have noted, her musical skills and physical beauty are outstanding.
She's been my fave pianist for years. Love love her Brahms
Those FULL LIFE FILLED OPEN eyes...how wonderful
Lovely portrait. Thank you very much.
"The purpose of art is not the momentary ejection of adrenaline but is , rather , the gradual , lifelong construction of a state of wonder and serenity."
Glenn Gould .
Ms. Grimaud typifies this.
I never got over Gould's 1981 recording of The Goldberg Variations. How could one ?! Its reverberations seem to last for an eternity.
We are very pleased that you enjoyed it so much 😊
Her recordings of the Brahms' Op 116-119 are spectacular.
She's also stupendous live.
👍
Mi mas profunda admiración y respeto.
Una lección de vida. Felicidades, maestra Hélène Grimaud👏❤️

We're glad you enjoyed it 😊
Wonderful Portrait of piano virtuoso Helene Grimaud ! Great pleasure to listen to her added by excerpts from her performances. But the greatest pleasure was to be in her concert in LA Hollywood Bowl, unforgettable.
Thank you, DW Classical Music.

I saw her play at Boston's Symphony Hall the night Donald Trump was (actually) elected president in November, 2016. She was amazing. I echo what every other commenter has said about her.
See you soon in Munich
She lives in South Salem Westchester NY now
Not anymore in California?
heard her recital in Los Angeles last month, all German program, she's great.
she doesn't look 53, must be her vegan diet. 😆
Mozart was German, I wish she would play more Mozart.
CVArts, I, too, was at her recital in Los Angeles on 4/19/23. It was simply transcendent!! Her connection with the audience that night was like nothing I had ever experienced. It was as though we, the audience and Helene, the performer were at one and time literally was suspended. I had never heard Bach’s Chaconne played as perfectly as she played it that night. It is a performance that for me, brought the sublimity of the next world into this one and gave me a vision of “what’s to come”. I shall be forever grateful to Helene for that gift.
@@barbaraglynn1531 She and Jean-Yves seem to play in L.A. every season. Lucky we. This week it's the Mozart recital by Víkingur Ólafsson. He's great too.
And now, I have tickets for her concert at Caramoor in Katonah, NY in July. She’s playing Ravel. I just happened to have been in LA at the right time to attend the recital in April. I live on the East Coast and saw her at Carnegie Hall last December, but I”m really not a Grimaud “roadie”.
The tree she was caressing had “H + M” carved into it. I wonder if she and her husband did that or if it’s just a coincidence
А что?
🤍
She is very good, but sometimes her left hand gets a bit heavy on the keyboard.

she is me, us, perhaps.
Non ?
Dear Helene, could you reccomend me to a lable, but Deutsche Grammophon? I prefer American lables, because earnint money with Germans is somehow a fairy tale. Well, I'd liket to be a composer for piano, but I tend to write songs and earn money with my voice. If you see me as a good pianist, worth to be recorded, I'd be happy, if you can reccomend me to a lable. I love you, Julia Grigorian.
🤔
I dote on her, as a musician, as a woman, she is a delight, she is what I can best describe as a French international, civilised. I suppose that people who are international are comfortable with their own country, she is so French She reminds me of my fiancée who inducted me into French life, a Yorkshire Frenchman .
